The best way to alienate your clientele is to suggest that half of them don't (or can't) read. Hope you guys aren't shelving any books about poverty, systematic economic alienation, addiction, lack of access to education, and/or political apathy to working class problems.
This is my favorite building probably in the world. It was once in the Guinness book of records, because you can reach each one of four stories from the ground floor. It sits in the town of Appalachia in SWVA.

Homeschool kid here. I went to a top 25 college, earned a law degree from the same school, and have been working professionally in media for the last 8ish years. My brother is a division one scholarship athlete who now manages a business with 200ish employees. Thanks, mom.
“Look ... so you changed your business model so you could stay in business and out of financial ruination. Well I got a message for you. F*ck your new business model, and f*ck you.”
Earlier today, Governor Cuomo said chicken wings are not substantial food for bars to be allowed to sell alcohol. He added that sandwiches were the "lowest level" of substantive food.

His comments:
No matter what anybody says, no matter how insensitive, ignorant, or offensive it may be, I promise not to cancel them. Why? Because I believe in free speech, and also because I have no power and almost zero influence.
It’s National Miner’s Day. Don’t forget to thank the men & women who’ve powered this nation’s machines of industry for decades at incredible risk to themselves. Thanks especially to my papaws, who worked their entire lives to give my parents & me a shot at the American dream.
The kind of thinking that says (as Warren did last night) that abortion is an "economic" right is the kind of thinking that can justify any act in the name of prosperity. When we diminish the value of the individual life for the notion of collective "wellness," we're China.

I love it when men explain what “equality” means for women. Men should definitely be leading this conversation. And every conversation about gender.
Wait ... I don’t think that’s right ...
@AlecStapp
“It’s actually good that we’re destroying the soil and broader environment to serve a population that’s less connected to the earth and more alienated than ever before. Think of all the great Netflix shows you can watch now that you don’t have to get your harvest in.”
Overheard in a coffee shop in NC:
tween girl to tween boy: "hi, do you have snapchat?"
tween boy, nose in book: "I don't even have a phone."
tween girl: "well, I'd follow you if you did."
tween boy: "I'll keep that in mind."
Damn. He's cool.
When I was 14, someone I admired told me I needed to lose my accent if I was going to amount to anything. I was embarrassed. It was Loretta Lynn on Larry King Live that helped me do away with all that. Grateful to be a coal miner’s granddaughter. On angel’s wings, Loretta. RIP.
I once heard
@Chris_arnade
say that some of the most content people he’s met in his work are people who have both the faculties and resources to pursue things outside of their own communities, but who have chosen to stay close to home to care for family. Love = purpose.
Some professional news: in the next weeks, I’ll be joining VA House of Delegates Majority Leader
@delterrykilgore
’s team as comms lead. I can’t adequately explain what this opportunity means to me & how special it is be working on behalf of my own community. Let’s go VA!
In my first piece for
@RealClearBooks
, I wrote about a highway diner in middle Appalachia & the sacred experience of a fresh-made burger. Thanks to
@Perez_Writes
for the opportunity, to
@hseanbrock
for context & color, & to Pound, VA for its grit & love.
In the early 2000s, before anyone understood what opioid addiction would do, my cousin broke his nose in a climbing accident & was prescribed opioids. He was the first of 4 cousins to overdose on the VA/KY border. But good luck with the fancy building.
Dear Corporations,
I want to know where the stuff I buy is made, who is making it & under what conditions.
You say Black Lives Matter. You say you’re inclusive & “striving to be better” when it comes to how you treat people of all races & national origins.
Cool.
Show me.
People from outside the south will roll up, scream over everybody, act rude as hell, bulldoze any cultural norms or customs, and then be like “I’ve never felt welcome here.”
If conservatives are serious about defending their space in the culture, they need to do what the left does: stop patronizing companies that hate them (including multinationals), call out alienating behavior where they see it, and actively support allies (often small & local).
Appalachian goodbye:
(1) Arrive. Say “I can’t stay too long.” Stay for hrs. Optional: enumerate tasks.
(2) Say byes/hug inside house, restaurant, etc.
(3) Talk for 45+ minutes on porch or sidewalk.
(4) Talk for 15+ minutes at/in car.
(5) Say byes/hug a second time. Leave.

about the domestic lithium boom, and how this white gold rush — spurred by the administration’s “green energy” policies — has led companies to gobble up farmland and forge ahead at breakneck speeds and at tremendous environmental and community cost.
Those I’m close with know that my family has been facing one of its most difficult trials over the last two years. It has broken our hearts in so many ways, and—I believe—changed the way we see the world around us. But today, by the grace of GOD, it came to a positive end. 🙏 🙌
People will move to Austin, stay for 6 months, and be like “I understand Texas and the whole rural south, and I’m ready to write think pieces about it.”
One of the most beloved and time-tested gatherings in rural communities: the antique car show. This says nothing of amateur stock-car racing, demolition derbies, auto-restoration, etc.
Manchin is in a position to demand what West Virginia voters need and want. He’s willing to field lots of criticism from folks outside of the state to hold that line. That is, definitionally, representative democracy. It should be a playbook for lawmakers across party lines.
What if we taught our children to read and interpret original source material instead of teaching them to adopt ideas that have been watered down and diluted by the pettiness of practical politics?
My family didn’t do gifts last Christmas. We’d made it through COVID (dad barely) & we decided we were enough. It was a hard time, but a bright spot was the way dad looked at the mountains on the way home from the hospital. It was as though he was seeing them for the first time.
Last month, the San Antonio city council authorized the use of eminent domain to take a bar called Moses Rose’s Hideout (they’re building a loading dock for the Alamo museum). I spent last night hanging out with the staff & learning what it feels like to face the end. Story soon.
New Quarantine Game: It's like Wheel of Fortune, but instead of dollar amounts, it's sections of the Constitution that lawmakers have violated or will attempt to violate during this whole fiasco.
Part of what I was fleeing when I left DC was an impoverished version of myself. My happiest memories over the last decade involve a good cup of coffee, a long hike, a conversation with a stranger. I forget sometimes that this is a reclamation. The missing ingredient is myself.
Owning populist traditionalists by exploiting photos of their ancestors.
Appalachian people everywhere will point to this tweet as a radicalizing event.
My mom’s dog went missing, and my brother and I posted about it on Facebook. Thanks to the people in this community, he was located/home within the hour. I love my hometown.
At

San Antonio Council Members who voted to authorize the eminent domain taking of Moses Rose’s admit in response to
@CarterRay22
that they believe “collective benefits” trump individual rights. Fascinating.
Old timer at the gas station: you married?
Me: naw.
Old timer: you’re too pretty not to be married.
Me: I’m too mean to be married.
Old timer, enthusiastically: HEHEHEH I heard that!!
It’s time for Manchin to switch parties. Dems have been exploiting workers for yrs. The GOP may do the same. Time will tell. But the proof is in the demographics for now. Dems are courting the TikTok vote. They could give 2 shits about the people who actually keep things running.
I don't want to talk to robots or AI or automated phone services anymore. I just want to talk to humans. And I don't want those humans to be available 24 hours. I want them to go home and go to their kids sports games or whatever. I am exhausted of the tyranny of the digital.
