The guy is now talking about sending a "shipment" to Venezuela, whatever that means. Impossible to write serious work like this.

Lots of action at the working class coffee shop today. A fight nearly broke out over the college football rankings. Very difficult to write serious literary work in this environment. Another guy just started screaming about Venezuela. Might have to head to the elite coffee spot.

The American dream is to go from blue collar scamming to white collar scamming.
This is a great piece with some mind-boggling statistics. - At Brown and Harvard, more than 20% of undergraduates are registered as disabled - At Amherst: more than 30 percent - At Stanford: nearly 40 percent Soon, many of these schools "may have more students receiving

Older outsider mentoring a down and out kid really is a perfect plot when it’s done right like this. Redemption achieved. Genuinely moving. Really captures male relationships in a nuanced and true way.
The Karate Kid’s been ripped-off, remade, and rebranded a thousand times over since its original release in 1984. I don’t have any commentary on what’s come after the original film- I’m just here to say the first film captured something real. This movie still holds up so well.

Shopping plaza realism. The next great American writer will come out of one of these plazas. Don't look down on the bagel guy. He might be the one. Magic everywhere.

Handed out a few translated novels from a hip indie press to the regulars at the working class coffee shop in Miami Dade County. Risky. Don't want to accidentally turn this joint into a hipster spot. We'll see.

Denis Johnson’s stories are always a big hit with my working class buddies. Great writer to introduce to people who aren’t into literature. Stylish but still accessible. Gritty in just the right way. Always a big hit with my community college students back in the day.

Passed by a construction site the other day and half the crew was reading Ray. A quiet working class literary renaissance is happening in Miami Dade County.
Going to the Miami Book Fair tomorrow. I'll be looking for the @Perez_Writes booth where Alex hands out copies of Raymond Carver: Collected Stories to passing construction workers and janitors. Might bring a mop.

Ray in the top spot is the right move. Barry Hannah should be listed. Chekhov should be #2. Hemingway is still top 5. Cheever needs to be listed as well.
TOP 10 Short Prose Writers 1. Raymond Carver 2. Ernest Hemingway 3. Ray Bradbury 4. Roald Dahl 5. Richard Yates 6. Tobias Wolff 7. Richard Matheson 8. Stephen King 9. Thom Jones 10. Philip K. Dick

These reviews are funny, but they’d be better if they included notes of clarification: The reviewer was spurned at a party by the writer. The reviewer went on 3 dates with the writer and was ghosted. The reviewer has been friends with the author since they met in prep school.
Funny when a book review is written by a friend of the writer. Funny when a book review is written by an enemy of the writer. We need 2 or 3 critics who live in a shack in the middle of nowhere and don’t know anyone.

Tried to explain the literary dynamics of the last 10 years to my Cuban American working class buddy who wants to write. How to fellowship chase, MFAs, funding, masculinity. He said he’ll stick to landscaping. Poor guy. Smart guy.
