responds to Oregon's return to failed drug war policies. Her vision? We actually ensure people get the resources that they need to thrive. Decriminalization of all drugs is a part of that vision - one part of a tapestry of interventions communities need.
Much appreciation to
@AOC
for speaking truth to power. We must legalize marijuana in a way that recognizes & repairs the disastrous, disproportionate harms of the drug war & mass criminalization on people of color.

Exciting news! New Jersey voted to legalize marijuana!! New Jersey will no longer spend $143 million on arresting people for marijuana. Our c4
@DrugPolicyAct
worked for two decades toward marijuana legalization in New Jersey and we are proud of these results.

The conversation has shifted from whether we’ll legalize marijuana to *how* we should legalize it. Legalization must include automatic record expungement, equity in licensing, and reinvestment in communities that have been most harmed by the decades-long drug war.
@AOC
gets it!
It's come to our attention that folks are reacting to
@drcarlhart
's book in predictable ways; namely, outraged that he talks about his own heroin use as a positive aspect of his life. DPA stands with him in speaking his truth. Read his book:
People have sex. We have condoms to reduce STDs.
People drink alcohol. We regulate the supply to stop adulteration.
People do drugs. We offer harm reduction tools to make it safer.
Removing access to clean equipment doesn’t stop people from using drugs. It makes it more risky.
DPA’s Board of Directors are delighted to share the news that
@Kassandra_Fred
will be the next executive director of DPA. As a brilliant, visionary & powerful advocate, Kassandra is well suited to lead DPA.
Most people who use drugs don’t have an addiction.
For those who use drugs problematically, criminalization doesn’t provide health-services they need. Criminalization does provide traumatic experiences, family separation, & lifelong consequences associated w/ a criminal record.
🗣End the drug war.
🗣Decriminalize drugs.
🗣Legally regulate drugs to end a poison supply.
🗣Harm reduction saves lives.
🗣Medication is treatment.
🗣Divest in over-policing, invest in health-services.
🗣Overdose is a policy failure.
🗣Options, not judgment.
🗣No more drug war.
Another win for marijuana legalization tonight in Arizona! Congratulations Arizona, for taking another step to ending the war on drugs.

BREAKING: NYC to open first official overdose prevention center pilots in U.S.!
This lifesaving win comes after years of hard-fought advocacy led by the Drug Policy Alliance and our allies. And the need is greater than ever: new data shows overdose deaths at a record high.
What Are Overdose Prevention Centers? (OPCs) are safe spaces for people to consume pre-obtained drugs in controlled settings under the supervision of trained staff and with access to sterile consumption equipment, tools to check their supply for the presence of fentanyl,…
Big Win! Following Rhode Island, Minnesota becomes the 2nd state to officially support overdose prevention centers. This afternoon,
@GovTimWalz
signed SF 2934, which mandates the Commissioner of Human Services to establish overdose prevention centers and includes more than $14…
BREAKING:
@POTUS
just announced that he will pardon all simple federal marijuana possession charges and urge Governors to take similar actions at the state level. We are thrilled about this announcement, and Biden must go further. Our ED

weighs in:
Dear police officers 👮 👮♀️ across the US: it is not possible to overdose on fentanyl or fentanyl analogues through accidental skin contact or from close proximity alone.
Gloves are enough. You don’t need the theatrics of full hazmat suits or wasting naloxone.
We mourn the loss of the many lives lost to overdose. Please hear us:
Criminalization of drugs is driving the overdose crisis. Criminalization wastes resources on arrest, incarceration, & punishment instead of harm reduction & other health-services that save lives.
Not everyone who uses drugs does so problematically, so not everyone needs or wants treatment. But effective, evidence-based treatment should be accessible for those that want it, and too often it isn’t
Massachusetts is making plans to launch the nation's first statewide social equity program to help minorities and people convicted of drug offenses work in the legal marijuana industry. This is amazing to see! Congrats
@shaleentitle
& others.
Today marks 51 years since Nixon declared the war on drugs, the longest war in the nation’s history that is fueling the current overdose crisis & has made drug possession the most arrested offense in the country with one arrest every 31 seconds. Time for a new approach—a thread.
“Stay sober.”
“Don’t do drugs.”
“Just say no.”
These unhelpful, dismissive pitchy phrases do nothing to meaningfully help someone who uses drugs problematically. It’s like telling someone struggling with depression to “Be happy.”
We fought so hard for Overdose Prevention Centers (OPCs) because we know they save lives. In only two months since opening, NYC’s two OPCs have reversed nearly 115 overdoses.
If the US gov. is serious about preventing overdose, they will allow other communities to have OPCs.
Drug use is not the same as addiction. The vast majority of people who use drugs do so in a non-problematic way, without any serious negative consequences.
Alcohol is a drug. It's responsible for more deaths every year than opioids. Our president boasts about having one of the largest wineries in the country & simultaneously calls for the death penalty for people who sell drugs. THAT is hypocrisy.
Sobriety is a good option & we applaud anyone who is sober or trying to be. However, it’s not the only option. We believe people need options, not judgment. Those options can include safe consumption sites (harm reduction centers), drug checking/testing, drug education, & others.
While Biden's latest executive order on marijuana is extremely welcome and long overdue, there remains much more to do to provide the relief and justice our communities deserve. Let's take a look at what he did vs. what he should be doing.
No, fentanyl powder is essentially not absorbed through the skin.
The overdose crisis is concerning and we all want to save lives. But, we can only do that by operating with facts, not falsehoods and hysteria. Here are some facts about fentanyl.
#WTFentanyl
: With so many fentanyl exposure stories flying around, I figured I would share a brief guide/flyer for first responders that I had made a while back. I hope this clears up some of the concerns people have regarding toxicity. Please feel free to use, copy and share.
MYTH: Criminalizing drugs will end drug use, get drugs out of communities, and save lives.
FACT: Criminalizing drugs hasn't stopped drug use, led to more dangerous forms of drugs being produced, and has fueled the overdose crisis

hashtag and memes are why we must go beyond headlines. A thread.
Let’s talk about fentanyl & overdose.
Fentanyl itself is not the issue—it is currently legal for pain management under the supervision of a doctor. Where it’s partly responsible for the increased fatal overdoses in recent years is when it has been mixed into the heroin and…
Drug decriminalization in Portugal has been in the news. Let's talk about it. A thread.🧵
When Portugal decriminalized drugs in 2001, they led with a health approach. They promoted drug prevention, education, harm reduction, treatment, and community reintegration.
“We are heartbroken to hear the news of Michael K Williams' passing. His death reminds us that our work is more urgent than ever. It's alleged that he died of an overdose. It is clear by all measures that the US’ approach is not working and that our communities need more.
We know exactly what killed George Floyd.
It’s the systems that have been created through the parasitic relationship between policing, the drug war and racism. These systems empower officers like Derek Chauvin to operate with impunity.

VICTORY! New Mexico has passed the Cannabis Regulation Act!
This is a huge win for New Mexico. Cannabis has been legalized with equity and social justice at the fore, and with vital expungement and re-sentencing provisions.

Let's talk treatment for chaotic drug use or substance use disorders. A thread.
First, coercing people into treatment undermines their dignity and autonomy--the evidence suggest that coerced treatment is ineffective. Treatment must be evidence-based, voluntary, and accessible.
Today marks 52 years since President Nixon declared the war on drugs, but let's remember: the real enemy is the drug war itself. It's never been about drugs; it's a tool of racial and social control. A thread🧵
#EndTheDrugWar
Drug policy needs to be based on science and evidence, not emotions.
The drug war has been active for 50+ years, we’ve cut down on medical opioid use, and we continue to criminalize drug use. Yet, overdose rates are sky rocketing.
Isn’t it time for a new approach?
Overdose rates continue to climb to unprecedented levels. It’s one of the most severe public health challenges of our time. The issue is urgent to us all.
But it’s also politicized to build support for criminalization. Drug policies must be created from science, not emotions.
People who use drugs are…
People.
Drug policies should be grounded in science, compassion, health and human rights, not criminalization and prohibition.
#DecriminalizeDrugs
DPA mourns the death of George Floyd. “Drug involvement” is far too often used as a justification for illegal stops, arrests, and murder. Officers made callous jokes about drug use as he gasped for breath, as if drug use could justify his death.

Wow! What a powerful piece from
@ShaunKing
. "It’s just plain wrong that anyone is being arrested and having their lives ruined because they want or need [marijuana] and just don’t have the same level of access to it."
