My thoughts and speculation on Starship V2/3 (🧵)
Feel free to correct me on anything, this is just an initial breakdown so I’ll probably get things wrong.
(1/5) ⬇️
• Updated flaps - hated them initially, but now I don’t think they’re that bad. Pretty sleek actually.
• The aft flaps look to have gotten larger, possibly like the OG ‘hop Ships’??? (Not exactly sure, pls correct)
• V3 stretch looks ridiculous I’m sorry.

(EXTRA STUFF I FORGOT)
• Grid fins now back to 90° separation (booooo 👎)
• Raptor 3 pretty cool
• First booster catch this year seems reasonable
• 6 RVACs on V3 is great but length sort of seems unnecessary, sceptical for strength since they’ll be moving to a thinner steel.
I’m gonna start off with the booster:
• Grid fins - they’ve been moved down! My guess is that this is to do with removing them from the immediate line of fire during hot-staging, they won’t be fully protected but this will help with reducing the need for refurbishment.

Due to the recent close proximity of
#Jupiter
and
#Saturn
in the sky to the
#Moon
, I have been able to get some daytime pictures of the planets! Saturn was taken in the late afternoon yesterday and I took the picture of Jupiter around half 15:30 today!
@DavidBflower
• Removal of engine shielding - Elon obviously mentioned that R3 acts as a heat shield on its own so won’t need additional protection. Not really a fan of naked raptors, looks a little goofy.
• General removal of exterior stringers, not much to comment on.
(3/5)
• HSR hugely simplified - this helps save mass and decreases the internal surface area (ie large space for exhaust to escape resulting in a cleaner separation)
• Using the more traditional ‘triangle struts’ probably makes the ring a lot stronger - they’re triangles 📐❤️

If they want to be inspiring the new generation (AKA teens) they they should be pushing their content on as many socials as possible. Most teens use YouTube, not X, and so they are limiting reach. In a reply Elon even said that more people should know about this stuff!!
@Lezzyl_
SpaceX and Rocket Lab have by far been the best for coverage, but other companies should push for it. The saddest thing is when launches aren’t streamed at all or with very poor coverage, like for Arianespace you seem to see the first 20 second and the rest is animation.

@NASASpaceflight
I wonder if they’re redoing the foundation to match the post flight 1 strength upgrades, I don’t know why this wouldn’t have been done sooner though.
Together with
@DARPA
& our industry partners, we have built Manta Ray – a new type of uncrewed underwater vehicle. 👀 Manta Ray will operate long-duration, long-range missions in ocean environments, going where humans can't.

I swear if they scrap SN15 I will SCREAM! This ship is part of history and deserves to be put on display! Hoppy and SN15 are key pieces of flight hardware that have paved the way for future vehicles - they need to be preserved!!!
@CosmicalChief
I think if they’re at all going to utilise solar power at Starbase, they’ll want to be efficient with their space usage and mount them to the roof of the Starfactory.
Some nice quick shots of the Moon this evening:
The last picture shows a relatively high exposed image in which you can just about see some earthshine and two stars! The brighter of the two is designated ‘HIP 23395’ (what a creative name! 🙃).

Been thinking about the new Artemis timeline, I wonder if NASA has considered the idea of launching Artemis II to dock with the Starship HLS demo (also planned for 2025) in NRHO so they can perform a longer (ish) stay and validate integrated systems between Orion & HLS.

I’ve never heard of these guys until now but they’ve just showed up and dropped some of the most incredible footage I’ve ever seen. I don’t know how they’ve managed to hold this back for so long but props to them for all of this. WOW! 🤩
Go check out all their 4K stuff on YT…
