Mental health professional. Homelessness, sweeps, evictions, high rents, & police budgets are *violence* - hold LA electeds accountable. Fund community health.
(THREAD)
There's a mischaracterization against unhoused Angelenos that officials use to defend sweeps & policing as strategies. It says many people don't want or are *resistant* to services. Policing DOES NOT address this phenomenon and in fact makes it much worse.
I just got detained and cited for… “spitting on the side walk.” They even blocked traffic for this citation.
Combined, these 2 cops make more than a whopping $508,000. More than half a million dollars spent for a couple neighborhood bullies.
Holding 8 activists without bail until after Christmas!!
There is no reasoning for this. This is overt retaliation against a group of activists who’ve embarrassed the cops over and over again.
🚨🚨🚨
San Bernardino Sheriffs have now told community members outside the courthouse must disperse and leave. This is an incredible abuse of authority.
They are trying to cover up what they did in court this morning to the Justice 8!!
Someone got hurt at Echo Park Lake & needed a first responder. LAFD couldn’t figure out how to get in the park. They had walk a quarter of a mile to get to the injured person.
This doesn’t fucking help anyone. The city could have brought this person a trash can, helped them clean up the area, and initiate a long-haul supportive relationship. But this isn’t about help. This is state violence against people
@JoeBuscaino
deems undesirable.
@The_Acumen
Hopefully the pandemic is revealing that FEW of our jobs are actually essential. We should be sharing in the essential work and then prioritizing the work that actually makes our communities better. Not wasting our skills, effort, and time increasing our bosses’ profits.
Newton Police Chief Rob Burdess arrested a man by the name of Noah Petersen tonight at a city council meeting. During public comment, Petersen criticized the police department and said it supports domestic abuse, referring to a specific officer. The mayor demanded he be removed.
Wow.
@kdeleon
just called mutual aid organizers “opportunistic parasites exploiting poor people.”
He’s talking about people who have been volunteering their time to keep their neighbors alive and supported during a pandemic.
“Not even people accused of murder get ‘no bail’ holds. They are in jail without even the possibility of bail.
Over what? Protests, speaking up for the disenfranchised, representing a community.”
Christian Contreras, lawyer for Edin Enamorado, is speaking at the press conference outside the courthouse.
Christian says “it is clear that San Bernardino County and these law enforcement agencies are criminalizing first amendment activity”
Flores pushed me for asking what he would arrest me for and seconds after, he threatened my 19 month old baby asking "how's your son, how's he doing” while fidgeting with something in his left hand. Flores was trying to find any reason to get his hands on me as you can see.
The homelessness budget is less than a third of the LAPD budget. Of that amount, $9M will be allocated to the LAPD to patrol shelters & $57M will be allocated to carrying out encampment sweeps. Remove police from all homelessness funding.
A judge just silenced a local activist, banning him from using his social media platform of 49k followers… after holding him with *no bail* through Xmas.
Other activist are still being held without bail.
The judge is trying to bury this. This should have A LOT more attention.
Only 1 (Jaguar Arreola) of the Justice 8 was granted release on bail. The judge placed a bunch of conditions on Jag, including no social media use.
The judge cited “a continued threat to public safety” as a reason to withhold bail for the others. The next hearing is January 3rd.

There are many reasons to doubt the veracity of this story. But there are many people & organizations actually saving lives with Narcan and won't get this kind of favorable coverage from the
@latimes

Our unhoused friend Jimmie is a hero, last night in echo park he saved someone’s life with Narcan!
Over the past year, residents of EPL have saved so many lives with narcan that we’ve distributed to the community, but
@MitchOFarrell
and
@MayorOfLA
will never acknowledge this.
@latimes
On-the-ground organizers who've implemented life-saving mutual aid, yelling at the most powerful ppl in LA are causing a "negative effect on the democratic process in Los Angeles"?? Sure it's not the billionaire, real estate money, or police union who bought these candidates.
Saw 4 LAPD cruisers in front of EP target after arresting someone for allegedly stealing dish soap. I asked for their names & serial numbers, then more than 1 referred to me by name & told the arrested person details (I never told them) about my employer. 🧵 on those who ID’d.
@GravelInstitute
This victory brought you by

Notice how “centrism” is always an excuse to reserve even more space for white perspectives.

They “collected 564 pounds of urine” and nothing about that seems odd? Printing the state’s words without proper follow-up questions or investigation amounts to propaganda, not journalism. Also, literally every one of the “hazardous waste” items amount to households chemicals.

So it’s more important to protect the Kennedy legacy than to support polcies that would lift Americans out of poverty and financial insecurity... 🤦♂️

The anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, anti-Asian sentiments from Nury, Gil, & KDL demonstrate such a deep level of internalized white supremacy. This is the exact danger of this present stage if Id politics: non-white politicians w decorum offering cover for brutal racist policies
@laura_nelson

Here are former Echo Park Lake residents complaining about how the city refused to pick up their trash. Now the city officials wants to blame former residents for the problem *the city* caused.
This cop illegally detained me bc he didn't like what I said, then cited me for "spitting on the sidewalk" which isn't illegal.
He has a violent history the public deserves to know about.
@KarenBassLA
&
@ElectHydee
effortfully protect thugs like him from public accountability.
Why did the LAPD remove this use of force file from public view?
Three months ago it was available after this lying cop got caught illegally detaining an activist.
@WhosThatCop
exposed these documents, and then the LAPD removed them.
@JulietJeske
@AmandaMarcotte
Being a ‘moderate’ is such a position of privilege when currently the entire globe is heating up, global inequality is on the rise, .5 million in the US are homeless, and the police is armed like the military.
Right-wingers are brawling in the street & someone’s been stabbed right in front of LAPD headquarters. Not a single helicopter in sight. It’s a significant difference how LA responds to protests against cop violence vs. right wing fascists. They police the left, not the right.
How is it at all appropriate for
@MayorOfLA
&
@MitchOFarrell
to deploy an army of cops to a *vigil* for
#DuanteWright
, who was murdered by cops. The racism cannot be understated.
@laura_nelson
@boreskes
They’re claiming that 70,000 pounds of “waste” and Ben is like, “yep, makes sense.” Meanwhile, the “waste” in the picture is... a couch, you know... for sitting.
The amount of violence coming from
@CaltransHQ
&
@CHPCommissioner
to keep these homes vacant is so ridiculous. Reclaimers are literally blessing the cops with sage while the cops hit them with batons & shove them back.
We are paying this person more than the mayor. We would “cancel” a celebrity for this, but this guy is allowed to walk around armed and without any meaningful oversight.
In 2008, LAPD Officer Antonio Vargas, serial number 36521, punched a suspect 5-10 times in the head while holding a flashlight. Vargas & his partner claimed the suspect went for their guns and opened Vargas' ammo pouch. DNA tests did not confirm their story.
It’s unbelievable how this city works. This is one of the rare locations where there’s port-a-potties & hand washing, along with consistent maintenance. Starting tomorrow it’s criminalization zone. It’s in

@LAPDHQ
In the above video (at 7:19) this cop is clearly seen using an overhanded baton swing to break a journalists hand. LAPD’s explanation completely ignores this to instead focus on an incident that is not shown in the video.
@FilmThePoliceLA
In Spanish she yells him, “Get down on your stomach!” He puts his hand on the street to lower himself down, then she yells, “While keeping your hands on your head!”
How the hell was he suppose to get down WHILE keeping his hands on his head???
I just called Hugo’s office to ask when they are going to be issuing a public apology for failing last week to vote according to the platform he was elected on.
They told me he is going to continue defending his vote. Also said the LAPD received a budget cut, not an increase???
This video shows LAPD attacking vigil attendees who were literally kneeling with hands in the air just 15 minute prior. You can hear people screaming, rifles firing, and people agonizing about being hit with batons - some people kept hands in the air throughout.
A few hundred of us sat peacefully in front of
@mitchofarrell
’s office when hordes of riot cops rushed towards us. What would’ve happened if there was zero police presence? We would’ve sat there quietly for maybe another few hours before heading home. All this to vacate a park?
There were 6 cops and only 3 identified themselves as they’re legally supposed to. They want a right to privacy while they surveil us 🤡
Michael Putrah was the supervisor.

Hey friends. I want to share something I’ve been dealing w/ recently. Last month,
@CityAttorneyLA
@Mike_Feuer
’s office sent cops to my house with a restraining order from
@MitchOFarrell
& staff, barring me from coming w/in 300ft of both LA City Hall & my local CD office.
When you google “is it illegal to spit on the sidewalk in LA” it shows you this. But if you click that link, you’ll see that it’s not LA Municipal Code. It’s municipal code for Corona, CA.
They don’t even know the laws they’re enforcing - they just google & hoping it sticks 🤞
Wow. This
#PeoplesBudgetLA
presentation from
@BLMLA
to the LA City Council is so good. If you haven’t had the chance to tune in live, go back and watch it. Seriously.
LA City Council is the CAUSE of the homelessness crisis because they treat unhoused Angelenos like an aesthetic problem - instead of providing necessary services and housing people.
.
@PaulKrekorian
's staff spends an awful lot of time filming homeless encampments from their cars. Not sure what the goal is but sure it's evil, creepy, and ultimately illegal. Like everything else CD2 gets up to. And every other CD for that matter.

Another video from
#BlockGarcetti
. A cop refusing to wear mask batons me 3 times, also you can see the massive police presence for a peaceful protest where there were multiple families with children & toddlers.
I’m sure he’ll never understand the irony of making >$200k a year and not being able to finish a term before running for a different office, while calling unpaid organizers parasites.
Please support the amazing community at Echo Park Lake! If you're wondering how to have direct solidarity with our neighbors, this is a perfect place to donate.
The pantry is growing in the BEST way possible. Opening opportunities for my unhoused neighbors to have real work right here in the encampment. Working 4hr shifts, $10 per hour, almost daily. Donate now to help this manifest!

I voted no on the budget today.
Budgets are a statement of values—and a budget that allocates one quarter of our entire budget to LAPD while underfunding every other department and service does not reflect my values or the values of my constituents.
Unhoused tenants have been screaming about carceral conditions at shelters. Now the city & county are working together to literally put people in jail. This is very serious. We need people paying attention to this👇
HUGE breaking news here:

This is not public safety, this is criminalization of poverty. More and more people are stuck in cycles of extreme poverty because LA spends billions on systematically punishing the poor instead of providing support.

Venice - Ash Wed 2021 - LAPD crusade to ticket, threaten, & harass unhoused people off Venice Beach. Don't care if they have no where to go or trying to shelter in place. "If you are not gone when we come back, we will arrest you." "You have 10 minutes to pack up and leave."
Mitch O’farrell has been working with an astroturf group of anti-homeless homeowners. He’s organized them to call into tomorrow’s City Council meeting to support making LA Convention into a shelter & to advocate for sweeps in Echo Park.

I’ve had clients living in the street with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia who have had to confirm their diagnoses EVERY YEAR to keep their benefits, as if these conditions have magical cures. Keeping themselves fed is hard enough as it is.
The sheriffs just used a battering ram to break into a house in order to violently drag poor people out of their shelter. There is a child in the house
The LAPD had a townhall to address the secret police they’ve been using to arrest unhoused people… but refused to allow an unhoused person to speak about their experience.
An unhoused resident reading this statement at tonight's meeting. She wasn't able to finish reading it, after the captain cut her off. Here's full statement.

had presence in the park until 12:30am, hours after the crowd was violently dispersed. At least a dozen people left in the park and no PRK rooms were available, so GG provided rooms & transport for displaced residents. 2 were *arrested*.
Update: Mayor Eric Garcetti said only two people remain at the Echo Park Lake encampment. "I think a lot of people probably who were protesting didn't know that there were only two people last night even left in the park."
Folks are telling me that the code on the citation (10.56.070) isn’t even even LA Municipal Code, and as far as I can tell they’re right. It doesn’t even seem like spitting in the sidewalk is illegal in LA.

Los Angeles has a growing poverty rate that is already >20%, why haven't financially oppressed Angelenos gotten the entire letters page?
Services have to be PREFERABLE to not having services. People WILL gladly accept services they believe are useful & helpful for their circumstances. If people refuse services, the problem is that the services do not meet their needs; NOT that unhoused individuals are resistant.
*RELATIONSHIPS* are crucial to the effective services. Ppl often refuse services bc they’ve had terrible experiences w/ providers & their services. Any effective services are reliant on building trust w/ a community that has endless reasons and examples NOT to trust city efforts.
