Great report from @joeyneverjoe, with some amazing sound bites from LA council members Tim McOsker and Katy Yaroslavsky. 🍿🥤
LAPD found another way to defund the city, this time by trying to overhire officers beyond their hiring budget. The decision could cost the city $3.56 million, and the councilmembers on the Budget and Finance Committee weren't too happy about it https://t.co/SosckwQliI

I worked on this story right before I had to go into work at my other job. It wasn't as in-depth as I wanted due to the limited time I had, and I hate that. By funding my work, you can help me quit my other job and allow me to report full-time.

The frustration was palpable. In large part because the department failed to identify any way of covering the overages. "The budget has to mean something," said Councilmember Tim McOsker.

No funding has been identified to cover the $3.56 million overspending.

I just the Mayor doesn’t read my work or use the Controller’s liabilities data portal. Thank you to the folks who flagged this and sent the video to me.
Mayor Bass denies city’s own data on nearly $400M LAPD liability costs — Hours after LA Public Press reported the figure, Bass told a town hall the city would be “bankrupt” if the $384 million in LAPD costs were true. https://t.co/AwBt1qmKY7

Opinion: L.A. city attorney to press: drop dead
dailynews.com
Why does the city attorney hate the press so much she literally wants ink-stained wretches — and their contemporary multi-media cousins — shot by the police?

A Border Patrol agent appeared to brag about his accuracy after shooting a Chicago woman five times, these messages revealed in court show. When pressed in court on what he meant, he said, "I take pride in my shooting skills." The woman he shot was in court as he testified.

The new media landscape is worth recognizing, but there's no evidence people have used press passes to commit any crimes, and adding that gives LAPD more leyway to make up stuff. https://t.co/N5Yf8RAZXb
Motion from CMs Blumenfield & McOsker asking the City Attorney to draft a law allowing "defined members of the media" to access protest areas closed to the public. It asks that journalist receive a pretty expansive definition, but also seeks penalties on enforcement end.

This is the worst one out of the three. The LAPD should not be responsible for anything related to press passes. The motion's framing says the press are the issue here for not having passes and not the LAPD. We're getting shot at with press passes on!
CMs Jurado & Hernandez's motion on the issue of press access is a bit more extensive but ultimately a longer path to navigate. Asks LAPD to create a campaign to promote how a press badge can be attained, and a bunch of depts to create an MOU w/ the LA Press club among others...

10,000 steps later, here’s what I picked up off Sunset Blvd three days after LAPD used them on celebrating Dodgers fans.

Hey @LAPDHQ, come pickup your shit off the streets of Echo Park. Sunset Blvd is littered w/ spent munitions. - 40mm foam rounds are the blue ones. - the black one is 37mm rubber bullet comes from a baton munition (seen below). Three rounds skip off the ground and hit people.

New from me! The LAPD is defunding our city!
Inside LAPD’s nearly $400M settlement crisis that’s bankrupting LA. Taxpayers are covering civil rights violations and officer misconduct while basic city services face cuts—and a new audit could reveal whether LAPD is doing anything to stop the pattern.

CS gas has been deployed in the general area of Sunset and Lemoyne. Stay away from the area.

The idea of “fake journalist” to commit crimes is a fantasy. Not a single person has used it as cover to do so in the history of protests in LA. Chief Moore made the claim it has happened to my face but never provided evidence of it.
“With the nine-page memo in hand, Feldstein Soto headed to a closed session with the council Tuesday. Tempers flared when she & Chief Deputy City Atty. Denise Mills suggested that the press club’s lawyer, Carol Sobel, took on the case only to make money.” https://t.co/qvLFzbj3kd
