Today, I am delighted to share work from
@NarayanLab
on biocatalytic oxidative cross-coupling reactions to form tetra-ortho-substituted biaryl bonds in
@Nature
Humbled and grateful to be named a Cope scholar. All a credit to
@NarayanLab
and my mentors and advocates that have helped me along the way.
Congrats to all of the other ACS award winners!! And a special shout-out to
@SarpongGroup
🎉👏
Six years
@UMich
! Thankful for all the personal growth during this time and opportunity to work with awesome people each day. Pictured below with Zain “the tenure clock” Narayan on my first day as an assistant professor. 💛💙
@MichiganChem
@UMLifeSciences
A heartfelt thank you to
@BlavatnikAwards
for their support and recognition of scientists and engineers. This award is a testament to the greatness of my team,
@NarayanLab
. It is particularly special to share this moment with my

Congratulations to
@AlisonNarayanUM
on being named a finalist for the 2023 Blavatnik National Award for Young Scientists!
These awards recognize "America’s most innovative, faculty-ranked scientists and engineers."

@MichiganChem
We detailed work from
@NarayanLab
toward applying enzymes in synthesis in a special Acc. Chem. Res. issue focused on natural product synthesis, which was guest edited by
@sarah_reisman
and Tom Maimone. Check this 🔥 issue!
We are starting to make plans for returning to lab (date TBD). Initial conversations have included creating sufficient distance between researchers at the bench, staggering schedules, masks, effective sanitation of work spaces...what are else should we consider?

scientists and engineers have been named the 2022 winners of the Mid-career Biosciences Faculty Achievement Recognition Award, which recognizes exceptional mid-career faculty in the biosciences.
P450s do fantastic chemistry, but can present practical challenges. In work just published in ACS Chemical Biology, Lara and
@purfectcatalyst
create fusions of a P450 with a reductase to give a self-sufficient enzyme for oxidative biaryl coupling
Wow!! Woke up to the best news, congrats to the 2022 Chemistry Nobel Prize winners, especially
@CarolynBertozzi
!!! What a day for chemical biology!!!!
BREAKING NEWS:
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2022
#NobelPrize
in Chemistry to Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and K. Barry Sharpless “for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry.”
When the world is extra shitty, my favorite thing to do is write a recommendation letter for an incredible student. A reminder of the light in the next-generation.

This piece, titled “within reach” was a gift to myself when I started as an assistant prof. Hanging in my office, this has become my mantra for battling imposter syndrome. For anyone that needs to hear this- you are already this far, it is within reach, just go for it!
A huge thank you to the
@dreyfusfndn
for this recognition of my awesome team,
@NarayanLab
, and providing unrestricted funds to pursue new ideas in the classroom and lab
@MichiganChem
@UMLifeSciences
Honored to be included in this outstanding group
As we gear up for another week, feeling these words.
“There is one flat-out true statement. Women have to work harder. There is plenty of room for mediocre men; there is no room for mediocre women.” — Madeleine Albright
I find myself asking the same questions everyday:
At lab: how did the controls look? what is the mass balance of the reaction?
At home: are you wearing underwear? did you remember to flush the toilet?
No surprises, same questions, be ready.
"I love the University of Michigan and have a deep history here" is a disclaimer I regularly lead with in recruiting conversations. For those of us with cult-like love for

the last few years have been trying.
This morning, I feel hopeful...a 🧵

There have never been more COVID cases in Washtenaw county than there are today. Tomorrow there will be more. As a point of information, the # of cases is off-scale for what the Washtenaw county specific graph can show.

This message from
@Drennan_Lab
is so important. I applied twice and went 0/2 as a graduate student. The process not only gave me experience in proposal writing but also taught me important lessons in persistence and empathy
A big congrats to NSF Grad Fellowship winners/honorable mentions. Here is to everyone who sent in an application and put themselves out there. I applied for an NSF and did not get it, but it was part of the process by which I learned how to write proposals.
Continuing with the theme of PIs in the lab, I present to you the fabulous
@AnnaMapp
! Yes, that is a distillation and an aldol reaction 👏

Today I'm thinking of students facing end of semester projects and exams in the weeks ahead. As a UM senior, I lost my father suddenly and unexpectedly on April 15. Memories of that time are vivid today against the covid backdrop. Many profs and GSIs showed me compassion, (1/2)
Aaaaaand....Pacifichem goes virtual 😭 It makes sense. I was just holding on to hope and enthusiasm for seeing people in-person and sunshine in December.

With advances in enabling technologies, biocatalysis has transcended early applications in fermentation to have an expanding footprint as an essential tool in the production of high value compounds:
Reading reviews from a top-tier journal where a reviewer has found a “fatal error” ....a misnumbered chemdraw structure. Seems like this was given a fair and balanced review. Perhaps I shouldn’t be allowed to mentor students with my awful numbering skills. Where I’m at this week.
Spent the first two minutes of class dealing with a “tech” problem, not able to make notes on my iPad. Then, a student pointed out white was selected as the pen color. Happy Thursday 🤦🏻♀️
Feeling extra thankful today for all of the supportive, creative and fun people I get to work with and learn from. Thanks for making it a great birthday

@AnnaMapp
also, sending bday wishes to my birthday twin down the hall

Bursting with pride and flooded with memories of the last 4 years as
@AprilLukowski
gives her PhD defense. Such an incredible scientist, collaborator and person. Congrats, Dr. Lukowski!
Pandemic has disproportionately impacted initiation of new projects by moms of kids. speaks to long lasting career impact. We all knew this.. now that data clearly shows it, what will we do about it? Strategic grant opportunities?
@NSERC_CRSNG
Was prepared to find the coolest superhero costumes for my boys….but this year they want to be a taco and a block of cheese. Pretty sure this will require a trip to the craft store. Send creative vibes.
