Should we still privilege learning by hand in maths? ‘Finger counting opens the door to better maths skills’: https://t.co/EJN8IBJM7j via @ResearchDigest

A recent study finds that kids who first learned to count using their fingers outperform those that didn’t, adding to recent debate.

🚨 Wide gaps in waiting times for a SEND diagnosis by socio-economic background 🚨 Middle-class parents have shorter waiting times for formal SEND diagnoses than working-class parents, we have found. Read our report on the SEND system 👇 https://t.co/lRGGeCxSsN

Does making reading easier with 'levelled books' help struggling readers? It seems intuitive but stopping grappling with complex texts is a problem not a solution. Read @ReadingShanahan: 'Why one reading expert says 'just-right' books are all wrong' https://t.co/SUmmxmQOv4

Excellent stuff. Frequent end of unit assessments give the illusion of progress, but in reality they could - and should - be replaced with more frequent and lower stakes retrieval practice.

Some schools do a test at the end of every topic. For some, this can mean 10 tests a year, not including end of year. This may be trying to game the testing effect, but this isn't increasing outcomes as much as you may think. We test three times a year. Link below for more

Most issues I’ve observed with quizzes or ‘Do Now’s’ are that they are relatively structured but not really precise enough to be more than a lesson settler. I like the precision & explicitness of the approach here - more effortful, but likely worth it in the long run.

Arsenal fans sing “feed the Scousers” and Everton put Fans Supporting Foodbanks’ logo on the screen straight away. Quality from Everton. Absolutely embarrassing from the Arsenal fans singing it. Solidarity with @SFoodbanks. Hunger doesn’t wear club colours 💙❤️

Tom Forth’s advocacy for the north is welcomed and necessary. National policy on infrastructure is dominated by the south east. Anywhere north of Birmingham is repeatedly scuppered. Opportunities for growth get stunted; young people leave. Rinse and repeat.

And there it is. Embargo is finished. Yorkshire Post press publish first. But I have my suspicions there's quite a lot more to this story than what they're reporting. https://t.co/MOcYqoCT9c
