In other news, lovely news, I am expecting my first child with my wonderful partner. 🥰👏
Our baby is due in July 💓👶 I'm nervous, excited & lots of other emotions but mainly pure joy. I wanted to share my happiness with my Twitter network 😊
I am so happy, I want to share my joy! 🥰💍
My boyfriend asked me to marry him & of course I said yes... my boyfriend is now my fiancé!
I love being in love, it gets better & stronger each day. He treats me with kindness, respect & love and he always makes me laugh & smile ❤️
Thread: We’re busy as classroom teachers. Time is precious. Research can be difficult to access, lengthy & even hard to comprehend sometimes. That’s why I’m a big advocate of research summaries & articles. Below are some I have found useful ..
Becoming a mother has changed me, changed my life & my world. 🌍
I love my daughter so much. ❤️💕😊
I have felt emotions I've never experienced before, ranging from immense joy to uneasy worry. I feel so blessed & grateful. 👏
There’s been so many great online presentations in 2020 ... I’ve collected them & put them in one place with categories such as leadership, dual coding, curriculum, retrieval practice, well-being, CPD & more!
Check it out here, hope it’s useful 😁
I always use a clicker (wireless presenter) when I'm speaking at an event but I often use it in the classroom too as it enables me to walk around the class & control the slides without being stuck to the desk. 👍 All teachers can benefit from one, especially if you use PPT.
September is the ideal time to start creating/using flashcards (little & often). If students wait until the exam season it becomes a big task workload wise & can’t be used for regular spaced retrieval practice.
Q & A simple. Flash cards don’t need to be flashy!

7 Myths about retrieval practice.
This is based on my recent
@researchEDDur
presentation. Created by the wonderful & talented
@MrGoodwin23
Retrieval practice is an effective T&L strategy for all learners but it is vulnerable to myths & mutations! 🧠
I am currently supporting my Y11 tutor group as they consider their A Level options.
This is a big decision for them.
I shared these great graphics from
@lizandmollie
with my form. 😁❤️
I created a resource based on some books & research I had been reading.
I used the resource in my lesson.
I shared it on Twitter.
The Retrieval Practice Grid has now had over 100K downloads & been used in classrooms all around the world. Incredible.

Resting is doing
@matthaig1
is a stunning writer!
As teachers approach the end of a tough year this is very apt & wise advice about taking a rest. ❤️👏🏻
Retrieval Practice: Think & Link resource.
To encourage students to recall information then make links & connections between individuals, events, characters, concepts etc.
🧠📝👍🏻📖
🧠Retrieval Practice Pyramid 🔼
New resource I created after teachers told me they were struggling to go beyond factual recall. 💻📝
A way to scaffold different Q’s leading to higher order thinking.

My step daughter has just started Year 7.
In Year 6 there were 2 teachers & 1 classroom, now in Year 7 there are 21 teachers, 22 classrooms & a 2 week timetable.
It's so important form tutors, teachers & Heads of Year are supportive of the transition & challenges. ❤️
I’m a keynote speaker at an event next year, the organizers told me that the other keynote speaker (male) had a considerably higher fee. They were uncomfortable paying me less as we have both been asked to do the same & they increased my payment so there was no gender pay gap.
Different retrieval practice techniques.
I would add
@Carousel_Learn
& short answer questions, Think-Pair-Share & Cold Calling.
Are there any other retrieval practice techniques/approaches you would add?
If you haven’t read this excellent blog by
@Doug_Lemov
about the forgetting curve you really should!
“The Forgetting Curve is a highly useful & also imperfect tool but one educators should know”
This is what I am very busy working on 🤩 I didn’t intend to write another RP book but I’m learning a lot & loving working with Primary schools! ❤️👏🏻
A lot of Primary teachers & leaders have asked me to write this book so I will do my best.
Release date tbc!

'Brain dump with a buddy' ... a slight twist, similar to 'cops n robbers' task.
Student must write down all they can recall from memory in the first column, then they can compare their answer with a peer & add extra/additional information in the second section. 🧠
Below is my presentation for parents & carers:
Effective Study Strategies.
Please retweet & feel free to share and send across your school communities.
I hope it's helpful! 😀
Students get frustrated when they revise but didn’t do as well as they hoped & confused parents ask what’s going wrong?
Some study strategies are more effective than others. It’s important to know how to study as well as what to study.

Making Every Lesson Count: Six Principles to Support Great Teaching and Learning by
@shaun_allison
&
@atharby
is a superb book I often revisit.
Here are the 6 key principles that link to desirable difficulties as well as providing support & challenge for all (not just some!) 👏
I’ve prepared a presentation for colleagues about remote retrieval practice & question design ... I hope it’s useful! 🧠💻🖥 I can share online if people would like to view? 👍🏻
This year I will continue to celebrate my success and the success of others.
I will support, champion & promote as many educators as I can whilst still working hard myself.
Professional jealousy exists in schools & online as I’ve seen recently but there is another way(s)!
A lot of teachers have said to me they want to engage with research linked to education but aren’t sure where to start ... I understand this as it can be overwhelming, so research summaries are excellent!
@teacherhead
has curated a range here! 😁👍🏻
New & Free Ebook I've written for

I haven’t met my Y8 class this term. Last day of term today. I asked the class to turn on their cameras via Zoom. They did at the same time holding up Thank You signs for me.💕
I burst out crying 😭❤️ then I laughed & we all laughed. I can’t wait to meet them all next term!😁
I applied for the first time to speak
@EducationFest
this year about retrieval practice - sharing the evidence & my classroom experience.
My presentation was rejected so instead I will host it as a free webinar for anyone that wishes to attend!
😁👏🏻 🧠👍🏻
I know Knowledge Organisers have had a mixed response with maths teachers but I think this is brilliant by
@_MissieBee
👏🏻 great for literacy with vocabulary as well as the content …
🚨 Big news for me ... after 5 great years in the UAE I am returning to the UK at the end of the academic year 🇦🇪🇬🇧
@BSAKAbuDhabi
is an incredible school, it’s very difficult to leave but it’s my time to go home & be closer to my family & friends. I’m so excited!
❤️🏴😁👏🏻🥰🥳
Retrieval practice is so versatile!
There are lots of retrieval practice tasks & techniques that can be used inside or outside of the classroom.🧠
What would you add? There’s lots more! 😁👍🏻
These summaries by
@XpatEducator
are fantastic! If you’re not following Jamie already you absolutely should be - he’s incredibly creative & generous! Thanks for sharing 👍🏻🧠
👏 Christmas Competition! 🎉
This has become an annual tradition but there are more books this year.
To win the collection of my books simply retweet this post. The winner will be selected at random - open to all globally - best of luck!
Winner announced 22.12.23 🎁🌲🎁
Very disappointing experience. Six hours driving, no travel expenses or fee I volunteered to do this freely to help trainee teachers but the tutors pulled faces at me, were rude, called Ofsted tyrannical & tried to suggest there wasn’t research about retrieval practice 🤦🏽♀️
It is great to be back at
@AberUni
to deliver a guest lecture to trainee teachers focusing on memory, teaching & learning & sharing the evidence review from
@EvidenceInEdu
Hapus iawn! 🙂👏
I created a study strategies menu for my students to show how retrieval practice can include variety.
Other techniques & tasks can be added depending on age, subject & topic. This helped promote a variety of evidence-informed study strategies for students to do independently.
Oh my goodness! It’s here 😁👏🏻
I can’t wait for primary teachers to read this book & I am very grateful for all of the kind & generous people that helped me write it! 🤩❤️👏🏻👏🏻
I am trying this with a few classes as I've noticed students often want to elaborate with MCQs & this allows them to but the elaboration is optional. Students can self assess MCQs & can share any further elaboration with peers/during class discussions. I'll share how it goes 👍
A presentation for parents & carers to introduce them to retrieval practice so they can support their child/children with a powerful & effective learning strategy!
Feel free to share with others.
Disappointed to read a tweet about mental health & teachers told to get a grip. We wouldn’t say that to our students so we shouldn’t say it to other educators or colleagues.
I’m very excited to announce I have signed my contacts with
@JohnCattEd
to write two new books.
I will be taking a rest this summer but I am very excited to get started! More info to follow at a later date ...😁📚📖 ❤️
🎉🚨 Competition 🚨🎉
I’m joining the team
@EvidenceInEdu
as Senior Associate for Teaching & Learning. To celebrate, we're giving away a set of ALL my books & a YEAR subscription to the Great Teaching Toolkit for a school! 😀👏🎉
Retweet this tweet to enter.
Good luck!
I’ve been called sad & a loser for reading so much about education ... doesn’t bother me. I embrace being passionate about what I do & I have lots of other interests & hobbies too. 😁👍🏻👏🏻💖
It’s sad that people feel the need to call others sad for doing something they enjoy.
FREE effective study strategies guide for pupils & parents. I removed any school branding so can be shared widely & freely ... hopefully it’s helpful. Download here 📝🧠
There can be confusion about being “evidence-informed”. This diagram shows the importance of evidence from research alongside teacher expertise, experience & context - not dismissing it. I certainly embrace being an evidence-informed teacher & leader as do many others I know!
Someone recently gave me advice to never turn anything down & take every single opportunity that comes my way.
They were wrong. I can’t do it all. I have to manage my workload & focus on priorities such as my health, relationships & classroom teaching. 👍🏻 I’m happy with that 😁
If you're not familiar with
@AceThatTest
you should check out their website!
There are free downloadable resources, videos, blogs, podcasts & more to help students, teachers & parents/carers learn about the science of learning.
Online parents evenings are the way forward - teachers could work from home (still in professional attire) so the evening didn’t feel as late. Timings were kept to. People weren’t waiting in line.
There will be time face to face conversations are needed but I liked this way!
Apologies I’m not doing an online book launch ... instead I’m drinking champagne & eating a cake that looks like my book with a small group of close friends ... wearing a ball gown! 💃🏻 😂🍰🎉📖👏🏻❤️
Thanks for all the support x
My remote retrieval practice presentation will be available online to view this weekend via
@rEDSurrey2020
I will share the link & hopefully teachers & leaders will find it useful

Retrieval Practice placemat - great for verbal discussions between students.
What verbal strategies do you in the classroom for retrieval practice that involves everyone in the class?
Starting my school week with some sparkle ✨🤩 Our working week in the Middle East is Sunday - Thursday incase you were wondering why I’m in school on a Sunday! 🤪
THREAD: my retrieval practice resource templates that you can download for FREE to use and/or adapt for your classroom. I hope they are helpful 😁👍🏻🧠
First resource is the retrieval practice challenge grid to promoted spaced retrieval.
Retrieval Practice Picture Prompt.
I created this simple resource where students have to explain how each image is connected to our topic.
This can easily be adapted for other topics/subjects too

A wealth of online presentations that I watched during 2020 lockdown ... presentations on leadership, curriculum, cog sci, literacy, well-being & much more! All in one place for us 😁👍🏻
I appreciate people delivering webinars sharing my retrieval practice ideas & using images of my resources but credit or reference would also be nice. I always try to do that with others - collaboration is important but let’s credit where it’s due.
Evidence is very important in education no doubt about it but classroom experience is significant.
Continual reflection on years of practice in the classroom is so important. Experienced classroom teachers are important voices to listen to.
An international event I’m speaking at copied & pasted my bio from Twitter ...
I really should remove that I’m Head of Gryffindor House at Hogwarts 🤦🏽♀️
As we start the new academic year now is the time to be informing students and parents about effective study habits & revision routines. I’ll be delivering an assembly on this in a few weeks to students.
You can download my revision guide for FREE here
I created this self check & correction placemat for my students to encourage learners to check their work & avoid making common errors & mistakes.
My classes found it helpful. Feel free to use or adapt 😁
