This is fascinating. And further evidence that if you work in education you should be following @C_Hendrick
Vygotsky's 'Zone of Proximal Development' is perhaps the most misunderstood idea in education. It was never a teaching method but a metaphor for how teaching can pull thinking upward, from the everyday to the scientific. ⬇️ 🧵

The argument that I hear many teachers make that as long as students are reading anything has resulted in the steep decline in reading stamina from complex texts and the vocabulary acquisition with it. It is not a victory for the non reading 8th grader to read Dog Man.

Super important read from @ReadingShanahan. All I can say is "Ditto, Tim!"⬇️ "We need not abandon small-group instruction but should employ it sparingly—and strategically. By doing so, we would increase the amount of instruction at least threefold." https://t.co/kctnhbnF4R

We’re missing out on a golden opportunity—one that could effectively triple literacy instruction overnight.

@BenisonMrs @ReadingShanahan This is why it may make sense to use a combination of decodables and guided reading texts and possibly vocabulary controlled texts for foundational skills instruction. Regardless of text, always prompt students to visually process each word as the primary strategy for word rec.
