GENDER ๐Ÿ“Š. Gaps between genders have narrowed, but girls continue to outperform boys. 19.4% of male and 24.5% of female pupils achieved top grades of 7/A or above. The gap of 5.1 pp is slightly lower than 2024 (5.7pp) while the gap in passing grades at 4 and above decreased.

In 2019, the gap between the region with the highest proportion of top grades and the lowest proportion was 9.3pp (London versus North East). That gap has now increased to 10.6pp, with London still leading as the best performing region.

REGIONAL GAPS ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ. Unlike at A Levels, regional gaps are largely unchanged since last year, including the performance of the region with the highest proportion of top grades (London) and the lowest (North East). However, gaps since 2019 have widened significantly.

SCHOOL TYPE ๐Ÿซ. The gap between private and state comprehensive school pupils getting the top grades has narrowed slightly from 29pp in 2024 to 28.4pp this year. This is similar to the gap in 2019. Grammar schools remain far ahead on attainment.

GRADES ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง. Results in the UK overall this year are similar to 2024. 21.9% achieved grades at 7/A or above, compared to 21.8% in 2024. Passes at 4/C and above were 67.4%, a slight decrease from 67.6% last year.

A large proportion of our MPs went to a narrow set of elite universities ๐ŸŽ“ . We found that 20% attended Oxford and Cambridge, compared to just 1% of the UK population. 55% of MPs went to Russell Group universities, versus 19% of the population.

๐Ÿšจ Bring back maintenance grants ๐Ÿšจ. England is the only country in the UK to not provide maintenance grants to lower income students ๐Ÿ’ฐ. Since they were abolished, poorer students have been leaving university with more debt than their wealthier peers.

GRADES ๐Ÿ“– . Overall, top grades (A*/A) have reached a record high outside of COVID years, with 28.3% of students being awarded a top grade. This is higher than pre-pandemic levels in 2019 (25.5%) and up from 27.8% in 2024.
