The new "Workload Model" which turns outputs (not workload, outputs) into numerical format and compares you against your peers is... not a workload model

Thanks to @intel for these early Christmas presents. We are looking forward to test what they can do in a scientific environment. Maybe using @PyTorch for training our #SkyGAN models or rendering with @CyclesRenderer in #Blender3d. 🖥️⛅️ 📷🧑‍🔬

Delighted to have been awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy @AdvanceHE through @UoB_HEFi's Beacon scheme! The opportunity to engage with pedagogical literature was genuinely fascinating. Huge thanks to everyone who supported my application.

Does your (EU) country attract or lose top researchers? AT, CH attract a lot. FR, DE, BE, ES are open places: as many leave as arrive. IE is a closed system. Italy, there is something very wrong: *very* few come, many go. Plot made with @ERC_Research data.

@stevenstrogatz My friend @DrDa5id made a style file for problem sets that's very feature-rich: you include the answers in the same TeX source and can turn them on/off, you can have the answers flipped upside down, etc. Available at https://t.co/ZCkXXeabEe

Today I learned about ASASSN-14ko - a periodic AGN(?) that actually looks convincing. Here is its lightcurve from last year's paper by Payne et al.

This short article (an adapted extract from my recent book 'If Science is to Save us') offers a somewhat depressing 'take' on the attractions of research that's based in universities, https://t.co/AmLcq8D3ZK

Long-term projects may fare better in standalone labs insulated from audit culture, says Martin Rees

It is tragic news to read today that today they have found the body of Tom Marsh, roughly 5 km from La Silla Observatory. Tom was a tremendous colleague and scientist.

Have you ever heard of seismology of Jupiter? This set of blurred stripped black-and-white pictures of Jupiter represents a large part of my professional life... and it deals with seismic studies of Jupiter. Thread. 1/24

Our team has been working overnight the past several weeks on the JIVE. In collaboration with France and Japan, scientist are working to determine the interior structure and composition of Jupiter using seismology. Wrapping up their run, here is one of the images captured.
