Dear America,
I study violence and I study mental health. The problem is access to guns.
I’m also the elected president of the International Society for Research on Aggression. International experts agree— it’s the guns.
Regards,
Tracy
I study bullying. The poor behaviour of academics and MDs on Twitter is gross. It illustrates the link between bullying and narcissism and debunks the stereotype of bullies being low achieving goons.
Public trust is eroded when we act like this. So frustrating to see.
Dear

& Dr. Williams,
We call on the Ontario Government to re-open all schools safely, and without delay, and work toward ensuring schools stay open for the foreseeable future.
Hard to forget people defending him even when told by countless women of his on-line cruelty.
“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” Maya Angelou
In addition to prioritizing in-person learning for children, we need to get university and college students back in the classroom.
Let’s not forget their mental health and need to belong.
Heart breaking how many girls leave soccer early and frustrating that we can prevent this by meeting their needs.
And coaches who only invest in a few players are part of the problem. Sports teach girls about leadership, cooperation, self-regulation etc. Invest in all players.
My new op-ed: Youth need to play and participate in sports during the pandemic.

Just finished this book. It’s worth reading. I would love to see a Canadian version of it. What happened in Canada and why, and who was involved in the decisions made about the pandemic?
Children and youth have been ignored during the pandemic at great expense to their mental health. It’s time we start attending to their needs.
#codePINK
This is misleading because the advocacy was for schools to be open because social isolation is bad for mental health. And for the record, there are thousands of studies showing that social isolation (and loneliness) is bad for mental health.
Honest question, do we even care about teenage girls?
In Sept 2020, 14.9% of Canadian girls said their mental health was worse or much worse than before the pandemic, and by March-April 2021, this rose to 38.3%.
“Tens of thousands of young children with developmental delays went without critical services early in the pandemic, a new report finds, suggesting many preschools and elementary schools are now serving students with greater needs.”

No...I'm an expert in child development and a coach of high performance athletes and know that deselection doesn't work. Send me your email and I'll send you all the studies that demonstrate this.
Kids were harmed academically, socially, and emotionally during the pandemic. We need to stop denying it happened just because we don’t like who is saying it. We need to stop politicizing the plight of youth.
Most kids don’t tell their parents, teachers, or coaches that they are being bullied. In our large longitudinal study, up to 86% of teens suffer in silence. That said, if they do tell you it’s because they trust you. So be sure to listen and advocate for them.
@NVRayT
And yet we also have these things in Canada, as do other countries, and we don’t have mass shootings every other day. What’s the difference Ray? Honest question. 🤷🏻♀️
More evidence of significant learning loss.
This study of 55 countries compared 2021 Grade 4 data from the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study with 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016 data.
Longer school closures = greater learning loss.

Scientific debate is important. But, we don’t do ourselves any favours by ridiculing, stonewalling, or bullying our colleagues. This vitriol makes it difficult for people to evaluate the nuances; it skews the debate toward autocratic scholars who aren’t held to the same standard.

We prioritize the health of our citizens. I will have another surgery today to deal with neuroendocrine cancer of the appendix.
I’ve had 3 CT scans, a PET scan, a bone scan, countless blood tests and appointments with specialists.
I have only paid for parking.
I’ve been sitting on this idea for a long time.
❗️Competitive sports are not good for the mental health of a lot youth and young adults.
Something needs to change.
I still cannot believe we were told that the MH of youth did not deteriorate during the pandemic. Here is more evidence that it did.

They are not needed in Ontario. Our public education system is excellent which is why we don’t see the huge differences between public and private schools that are found in the US.
@DrNadiaChaudhri
This was hard to read. My sister passed away from ovarian cancer in 2017. Like you she was a mother, funny, smart, loved by so many, and far too young. Your plight and the awareness it has raised will save lives. Thank you! ♥️

We need to address implicit gender biases in soccer. Here are 2 common examples:
1. Parents calling for a yellow card on a fair but hard tackle for girls but not boys.
2. Refs admonishing female coaches for dissent that pales in comparison to that of male coaches.
Mental disorders begin in childhood & adolescence. We need to intervene before they become entrenched & ideally prevent them before they occur.
This is why so many of us are frustrated by
@fordnation
&
@Sflecce
decisions during the pandemic.

First year university students are so brave. They often move to a new city, live with strangers in old dorms, manage a budget for the 1st time, take classes with too many students, etc.
It’s a hard transition. But it gets better. Hang in there and reach out if you need help. 🤗
School closures impact on youth mental health.
In this large study, MH ED visit rates were highest during the first school closure of the pandemic and the "risk of a visit during this closure period was twice compared with when schools first reopened".
I’m going to keep posting studies showing that youth in Canada and around the world are not doing well during the pandemic. Here is another one.

I really wish some of my colleagues weren’t so mean on social media. It has a negative impact on how their students and patients see them. It also erodes trust.
My high school physics teacher heard me on radio today and emailed me to say I did a great job.
Mr. Robinson from Revelstoke Secondary School was the best teacher. He always made us feel like we mattered ♥️
I’ve been thinking about this for some time. Here are some issues with youth competitive soccer.
1. Abusive coaches.
2. Winning over development.
3. Poor communication—it’s okay to reply to text/emails, it’s okay to explain your decisions, etc.
4. Focusing on the top 1%.
Tomorrow at 10am, surrounded by his adoring family, my kind, handsome, intelligent father will die with the help of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD).
His legacy is notable. He taught us to be compassionate, forgiving, and to advocate for those without a voice.

Millions of kids are missing weeks of school as attendance tanks across the US
“…growth in chronic absenteeism did not correlate strongly with state COVID rates”.
This is so problematic because poor attendance ➡️ poor academic performance ➡️ poverty.
1 in 5 🇨🇦 children have mental health problems. Here is what we need to do:
1. Increase services for mental health
2. Reduce stigma
3. Reduce bullying
4. Prioritize children’s mental health
5. Treat everyday like it’s a

I’m happy suicides in teens did not go up during the pandemic. But this isn’t the only metric for youth mental health.
• suicide attempts increased
• depression symptoms increased
• anxiety symptoms increased
• eating disorders increased
Let’s be clear about the facts.
@chanelkmeyers
Here is a way to “manipulate” them. Tell your students that narcissists are more likely to give poor evaluations (Vaillancourt, 2013). That should fix it ☺️

Today my 20 year-old daughter is getting vaccinated (lives in 🇺🇸) and last week my 70 year-old mother was vaccinated (lives in 🇨🇦).
This discrepancy highlights the incompetence of

My advice to the U17G players trying out for Team Ontario:
1. Avoid "all-or-nothing" thinking. Everyone makes mistakes. Re-set your thinking and move on.
2. Manage your social comparisons. Focus on yourself.
3. Be kind to yourself *and* your teammates.
4. Success is messy.

As a soccer coach, I would be remised to not also advocate for the prompt safe return to sports. We cannot, in good conscious, continue to ignore the evidence of who has been harmed--children and youth.
My new op-ed: Youth need to play and participate in sports during the pandemic.

We can no longer stand by and watch the threat to healthy development unfold. It is no longer tenable or ethical to keep children and youth separated from the relationships, supports, and learning opportunities of schools.

The effects of stress on performance are very well documented, yet I see coaches yelling at players or shunning them for making a mistake.
If you want your athletes to perform at their best, create an environment in which they feel supported.
Every major news outlet ran a story about the new CDC study showing that American youth’s mental health deteriorated during the pandemic.
And yet we hear 🦗 from those who have admonished many of us for saying that mental health was a problem before the pandemic and now. 🤷🏻♀️
It’s bullying prevention week in Ontario.
On Wednesday, I’m giving a keynote for the Ontario Psychological Association.
Bottom line— bullying causes mental health problems in the immediate and in the long-term and it negatively impacts educational attainment.

It bothers me to see showcase pictures for women’s university soccer and it’s 90% men scouting.
I’m not saying men should not coach women. I am saying that we need more women coaching women.
I just saw a tweet about how school closures were good for youth with social anxiety and this needs to be acknowledged.
True, but what also needs to be considered is how avoidance actually increases anxiety in the future.
