Huge thank you to Matt for having Lindz and myself on the show for this lovefest devoted to Steven Spielberg aka The Great Spielbergo aka The Scarf aka designer of Boom Blox! We had an absolute blast talking all things Spielberg and I hope you enjoy taking this wild ride with us!
New episode out now! Matt is joined by

to plan out a 24 hour marathon of Steven Spielberg movies! Matt, James & Lindsay make their picks from Spielberg's vast filmography to program 24 hours of his movies to celebrate one of the all time greats!
Rewatched Mission: Impossible – Fallout and came to the realization that I will never get tired of watching Tom Cruise do one of his comedy routines right in the middle of an extended action sequence. Beautiful.

“All I think is, I do not want to go down with Cameron Diaz. It’s like me going down myself that’s fine, with Cameron Diaz on the bike there is no way I’m going down.”
It still blows my mind that Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz actually rode that motorcycle.
I'm always mixed on Wahlberg but I have the Other Guys on in the background and his delivery of "If you were with me you wouldn't be in this strip club SHAKIN IT FOR DOLLAH BILLS" when he finds his ex teaching ballet is so fucking funny
Rewatched Live. Die. Repeat. aka Edge of Tomorrow last night and had forgotten just how good Tom Cruise is whenever he gets a chance to go into full Jerry Maguire mode.
30 years ago today, LAST ACTION HERO was released in theaters. For me, it remains an underrated gem that was wonderfully meta and ahead of its time but had the misfortune of being released a week after Jurassic Park. Justice for Jack Slater.
ray ferrier is inarguably one of tom’s best performances this is the hill i stand on… like it is top 5 maybe even top 3 it should have far more attention
I was looking through Carl Weathers filmography and had completely forgotten he was in an episode of Psych so I had no choice but to put that on and just as expected he was absolutely hilarious in this episode.
Rewatched Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and I think for me it’s that special combination of Tom Cruise the superhero and Tom Cruise the comedian that still makes the Burj Khalifa sequence such a standout in the series. “No shit!”
Celebrate the late Bill Paxton’s birthday by watching his first directorial effort Frailty. Often overlooked and under appreciated, this southern gothic horror also stars Paxton, Matthew McConaughey and Powers Boothe who all turn in phenomenal performances. Highly recommended!
On his birthday, we'd like to remember Bill Paxton, known by genre fans for his incredible work in films like ALIENS, NEAR DARK, PREDATOR 2, FRAILTY, THE TERMINATOR, and so much more.
“You get the sense that people who make Hollywood movies have never had sex. And I’m not sure how that could be true but it seems to be.”
Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy were years ahead of the sex scene discourse.
“And I just got up one morning and I was having some coffee and walking around and I thought, ‘I need to take a break from this. Let me do something else.’ So I sat down and wrote a screenplay.”
Cormac McCarthy on writing The Counselor
Watching Rogue Nation and this entire car chase is the coolest. Ethan, just waking up from being dead and wearing the dopest shirt ever, racing through the city with his best buddy.
Tom Cruise-athon brings us to Minority Report, top-tier Spielberg and just one of my favorite science fiction films.
Doesn't hurt that it has my single favorite shot from any Spielberg movie.
Rewatched War of the Worlds for the first time in awhile last night and when the tripods start to emerge from underground and that leg comes up before we see the rest of the tripod in full scale is still an absolutely awe-inspiring and scary as hell sequence.
Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds was released on this day 18 years ago.
This reimagining of the classic H.G. Wells story gets updated with blockbuster set pieces and amazing visual effects but what keeps you invested are the pitch-perfect family dynamics at its core.
When you think about Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Steven Moffat, Joe Cornish, Edgar Wright and more all working together on The Adventures of Tintin you realize just how shamefully under appreciated it really is
There are no drugs as good as this movie. It’s just an utter blast. Spielberg at peak in a new medium. Zemeckis tried to do great in mocap. But Spielberg made the case.
Rewatched War Horse yesterday and I get the feeling that if anyone other than Spielberg had directed this movie people would still be talking about this transition every single day.
I was having trouble picking a Carl Weathers movie to watch tonight but then I realized I also wanted to laugh as much as possible so I decided it had to be Happy Gilmore
Conan gets crucified. A vulture starts to eat Conan. Conan starts to eat the vulture while it’s eating him. Conan bursts into hysterical laughter. Conan the Barbarian is perfect.
The Burbs is one of those extra special movies where you can basically pick out any scene from the entire movie as your favorite and no one could ever really argue against it.
Rewatched Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation for the first time since the theater and I love how there are so many great action sequences that Tom Cruise chasing Rebecca Ferguson on a motorcycle through Morocco might not even be the best one.
Steven Spielberg pulling Peter Stormare over to the monitor to watch Pete Postlethwaite work on a scene and telling him that “one day you’re going to be as great as him” is my new favorite story.
The film also has some vintage Spielberg shots. There are some simple shots of people just walking that are visually rich. The opening scenes world build like few others. Everything is framed so well.
It’s so fucking funny when Wahlberg plays a scientist or tech guy. He’s basically as big as was in Pain and Gain just tinkering around with robots and microprawcessahs
A mid-00s Spielberg banger?
Check.
Tom Cruise in Weekend Dad Mode?
Check.
One of the best and most terrifying alien invasion movies ever made?
You bet!
One of my favorite things about the Magnolia behind the scenes footage is how you really can feel just how close Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Thomas Anderson were
People are always like "Why aren't there any movies with golden hour shots of southern Pennsylvania zinc plants" and then when you mention Unstoppable (2010) they just stare at you
Tony Scott’s Top Gun was released in theaters on this day 37 years ago.
I love Top Gun: Maverick but one thing it’s missing is a dogfight sequence set to the modern day equivalent of Mighty Wings.
It truly is fantastic stunt work and coordination from Vic Armstrong. To think if Spielberg wasn’t directing The Last Crusade there might not have been a tank sequence at all and then we wouldn’t have gotten any of this or Harrison Ford doing some of his own amazing stunt work.
Martin Scorsese discusses a scene from Topaz and the ways Alfred Hitchcock was able to use the camerawork in order to convey so much information to the viewer.
The Werewolves of London scene in The Color of Money is so good and it always blows my mind when I remember that Tom Cruise was only a 23 year old baby when they filmed this.
The meta narrative in MAVERICK has been noted (Cruise the Last Movie Star showing the kids how its done) but I also felt the Admiral Iceman/Captain Maverick relationship was tacit admission that Kilmer was always the superior actor, and here he's getting his due with nary a word
If you’ve put off seeing Unstoppable for some reason today is the perfect day to remedy that and watch this masterclass in lean, mean action-thriller filmmaking.
UNSTOPPABLE is probably my favorite of his films, his final film before he passed away, it is 98 minutes of some of the most thrilling action you will ever see. Denzel and Pine play off each other so well. Impeccable filmmaking
‘X2: X-Men United’ starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Ian McKellen, and Anna Paquin opened in theaters this day 20 years ago. 🧲🧠🔥

“𝚈𝚘𝚞 𝚊𝚛𝚎 𝚊 𝚐𝚘𝚍 𝚊𝚖𝚘𝚗𝚐 𝚒𝚗𝚜𝚎𝚌𝚝𝚜. 𝙽𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚛 𝚕𝚎𝚝 𝚊𝚗𝚢𝚘𝚗𝚎 𝚝𝚎𝚕𝚕 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚍𝚒𝚏𝚏𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚗𝚝.”
Jonathan Glazer crafted every single scene in The Zone of Interest in the most horribly beautiful way possible but for some reason this is the scene that is sticking with me
Watching The Last Boy Scout again and I got to wondering if any other movies in the last 30 years have even come close to matching this iconic opening sequence?
Tony Scott’s The Last Boy Scout was released on this day 32 years ago.
“I give The Last Boy Scout thumbs up for technique and basic action skill. It does work, but as a sign of the decay of public standards, it’s pretty bad news.”
Roger Ebert on The Last Boy Scout
As much as I love the kooky Tom Cruise stuff in Live. Die. Repeat. his switchover into emotionally broken down I don’t give a fuck man on a mission mode is actually my favorite moment in the movie.
Rewatched Live. Die. Repeat. aka Edge of Tomorrow last night and had forgotten just how good Tom Cruise is whenever he gets a chance to go into full Jerry Maguire mode.
