Hello friends and fellow

inspired play The Shark is Broken which recently made its North American debut. If you’re interested and feel so inclined, go ahead and have a read. Cheers! 🦈

"...in equal parts hilarious and poignant, The Shark is Broken works as a parallel to one of

We all know the Academy wouldn’t dare nominate a Sci Fi/Horror film, but John Goodman’s performance in 10 Cloverfield Lane is as good as you’ll ever see and is nothing short of brilliant. His performance is the anchor of the entire film.
We lost the great Bill Paxton seven years ago today. A welcome presence in every film he appeared in with countless stellar performances.

Today is Bill Duke’s birthday. If you’re not familiar with his work you should be. A creative force on both sides of the camera, he’s directed many wide ranging projects including A Rage in Harlem, Sister Act 2, and one of the best neo-noir crime films ever, Deep Cover.
What movie is 10/10 according to you but hardly anyone has seen it?
Fortress (1992)
This futuristic prison break romp is one of the best B movies you’ll ever see.
Regardless of everyone’s take on the new

trilogy, the scene from Halloween Kills where Michael emerges from the flames and slaughters an entire fire department will go down as one of the most iconic moments in the franchise 🎃
I feel that if The Warriors was released today it would spin off into its own film universe with different films dedicated to each gang

What's your comfort action movie?
Truth be told, all action movies are pretty much comfort movies for me but this beauty has been in constant rotation for nearly 40 years.
Name an actor who may not always be the main character but always makes the movie they’re in better.
My pick: Gary Busey
While his eccentric personality has somewhat overshadowed his talents in recent years his presence ignites every film he’s appeared in.
Name a film with an ensemble cast where the whole cast had incredible performances.
I can’t think of a more robust ensemble cast than Boogie Nights (1997). Along with the billed cast there’s Philip Seymour Hoffman, Luis Guzmàn, Thomas Jane, Alfred Molina and Philip Baker Hall.
Jason Statham deserves to ranked among the greats of the action genre: Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Bronson, JCVD, Norris etc. For the past two decades he’s consistently worked within the genre during a time when action cinema, arguably, hasn’t been as popular as it once was.
Regardless of repeat viewings this opening sequence is still terrifying 40 years later. With the exception of the first kill in Jaws (1975), this would get my vote for the greatest opening scene in horror history

A movie you will always recommend to people
American Made (2017)
Regardless of your feelings on Tom Cruise, this film is a total gem. Thrilling, funny, with solid performances from the entire cast. This is the dark horse of Tom Cruise’s filmography.
Say what you will about his filmography, but Steven Seagal’s early run was stellar action cinema.
And to think these classics were followed up by Under Siege (1992) 🔥
Who’s somebody that deserved an Oscar for their performance?
While it’s an obvious choice it can’t be repeated enough. Robert Shaw didn’t even receive a nomination. A travesty.
“Sometimes that shark looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a shark is he’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn’t even seem to be livin’… ’til he bites ya.”

Die Hard (1988)
Which comedian shocked you with their acting ability?
John Candy. I don’t know if there’s another performance that conveys both hilarity & heartbreak so effectively. It’s a shame we lost him so early.
Remembering the quintessential NYC character actor Joe Spinell who passed away 35 years ago January 13, 1989.
The Godfather (1972)
Taxi Driver (1976)
Cruising (1980)
Maniac (1980)

What's your favourite chase scene in a movie that doesn't involve any cars?
The chase sequence from the NYC subway into Grand Central terminal in Carlito’s Way (1993) is a masterclass in suspension 🤌
Richard Farnsworth had an interesting career trajectory. Starting out as a stuntman in 1937, he worked with everyone from The Marx Brothers to John Wayne before being cast in credited actor roles in the 1960’s. He went on to receive two Oscar nominations during his acting career.
