Surrounding yourself with passionate people means having to work harder on your relationships. Less assuming, deeper listening. Worth it.

Do you know what narcissists do when they find out that they are spectacularly wrong? No? You're about to. And it's not pretty.

This is 100% right and I really wish more people understood this about the the role of the federal govt.

An explanation of why DOGE is even stupider than you think. There are 2.4 million federal employees, but perhaps 20 million actors in the private sector and lower levels of government who administer federal programs. Federal employees basically provide oversight for the work

sorry but i will never understand people being against free meals for kids in school. I do not give a shit if some families who can afford lunch get free lunch....feed the fucking kids.

Saying "Everything sucks" and "we are doomed" is, in fact, not helping. If you think the democracy we have is not good enough for your participation, you're gonna be dazzled by what we get next.

The idea that we don’t “owe anybody anything” is why community is so fractured nowadays. Courtesy is not about a debt to others. It’s simply about honoring basic human dignity. People deserve to be treated with dignity. Full stop.

Say what you like about TikTok, but my family owns the Notting Hill Bookshop (yes, the one from the film) and the surge in young people buying books in the last year because of booktok has been wonderful to see. It's making reading cool again & I will always love the app for that

I met Joan Rivers at a party where I knew no one. She then took me around and introduced me to everybody. A kindness I will never forget.

It’s important to note that the average is $30k because it includes the couples who only spent $80 on a marriage license at the courthouse. A $30k wedding also has an average of 42 vendors working on it. The $ doesn’t split evenly but, if it did, they’d get less than $715 each.

One of my pet obsessions for years has been the wedding industry, and I don’t think my generation is prepared for the sticker shock. The weddings you see on Pinterest cost over $100k, and the average costs $30k. Who has $30k to spend on a wedding? Elopements are now on-trend.

The best piece on the ultra luxury wedding industry I’ve read in forever (and not just because I was interviewed for it). Favorite line: “I’m probably the most expensive help there is, but I’m still the help.”

Weddings have always been luxury goods. And like all luxury goods, they’ve been coveted, emulated, and knocked off by the masses. Xochitl Gonzalez on the lies, panic, and ponies that come with luxury-wedding planning:

yes we do, it was bad. the failure of our society to provide decent housing and medical care does not somehow give a random guy license to choke someone to death on a subway car

We don't know enough to judge what happened to Jordan Neely, but lots of people who don't live in New York and lots of people who don't ride the subway have a lot of opinions on this and they need to take a seat. It's working class New Yorkers who have to face down this violence.

Today is May 1st. Also known as the first Monday in May. Also known as Met Gala Day. Also known as the day thousands of people decide they hate museum fundraisers because this one funds something they think of as valueless: the archive and preservation of fashion history.
