Beauty standards are a good example of how most people are highly invested in following fashion, even people who say they’re unique or individual or independent thinkers. And also of how people enforce following and punish deviation through ostracization, mocking, and rejection.

I enjoy the aesthetics of the holiday season. Christmas lights are fun. Gingerbread is fun. Real trees and fake trees are both wonderful in their own way, and I adore fake snow and tinsel and ornaments. Tearing up wrapping paper is exciting, and I like food.

As someone who didn’t grow up celebrating holidays, I feel like an sociologist whenever holiday season rolls around. So many traditions! So much anxiety! So many rules that simply cannot be broken or the holiday is invalidated! And that’s all just normal for most people.
