@JohnCattEd
Year 11 have asked to look at some “real world” English this week - in particular, the process of applying for a job. Currently mocking up a CV for Bob Cratchit for them to feed back on. Particularly pleased with his email address.
In our

NEW BLOG: on thematic curriculum design in English. Really nervous about this one! A long read (apologies) on how, two years ago, we rebuilt our English curriculum from the ground up. By no means me advocating for a specific approach, but just some thoughts about how we did, and
Thrilled to be joining the
@JohnCattEd
family with ‘Ready to Teach: Macbeth’, a book I’ve coauthored with
@SPryke2
. Something wicked this way comes...
Available for preorder soon and released at the end of summer!
Thank you SO much for your kind words, messages and photos yesterday!
@SPryke2
and I were - and continue to be - completely overwhelmed. We can't wait to hear what you think of 'Ready to Teach: Macbeth'!
@Team_English1
@JohnCattEd
Threw together this quick remote learning booklet for AQA Language Paper 1 - nothing magic here at all but feel free to use/ change/ ignore entirely! It's in the style of
@spryke2
, but I asked permission first. Honest.
I have a spare one of these just sat on my shelf!
@SPryke2
and I would like to give it away -
please RT this tweet and reply with your favourite thing about Macbeth, and we’ll randomly pick a winner on the 27th Nov. Will chuck in some Christmas chocolates, too!
Another brilliant writing day with
@SPryke2
. We now officially have just one more complete read through to do, before we submit our new book, '100 for 100: Macbeth', to the good folks at
@JohnCattEd
! 🗡️📅📖
@Team_English1
Admittedly it has taken more years than it should to learn how to put one page in a document landscape, but I've just learned and my WORD is it sweet. Every document forever will now have a landscape page, just because I can.
Launched whole class feedback with all staff last night - I’m so, so excited about the impact this will have on teacher workload. And
@FunkyPedagogy
’s excellent blog was printed and given to all staff - a brilliant example of how this can REALLY work!
We are 30 minutes away from tonight’s Macbeth chat - great question tonight from
@Mathew_Lynch44
! Sorry if we are a little slow on the replies but something very exciting has happened this evening hasn’t it,
@SPryke2
!
#rttmacbeth
‘Ready to Teach: Macbeth’ is two today! Just wanted to take a minute to say thank you to everyone who has read and offered feedback on it, and to everyone who has been involved in its creation. We are so proud of it. Happy birthday, little book!

@JohnCattEd
And just like that, the manuscript for our third book has been submitted! We're so excited to get this one out into the world!
@SPryke2
and I are looking forward to the next steps of editing with
@JohnCattEd

@Team_English1
Great day of editing ‘Ready to Teach: A Christmas Carol’ today. I read 24k words out loud which, as it turns out, is more than the total number of words in ‘Hamilton.’
@SPryke2
@JohnCattEd
Just - WOW. What a stunning piece of theatre. Mind blown. Big statement incoming: my favourite ‘Macbeth’ I’ve seen - indeed, my favourite Shakespeare piece altogether! Masterpiece. Give them all the awards.

Genius way of live modelling from

@FSDConferences
This week our book went to print!
@SPryke2
and I are VERY excited - not long to go now! We were so thrilled with what the awesome
@RachelPiXL
thought about ‘Ready to Teach: Macbeth.’ Here’s a sneak peek.
@JohnCattEd
'Twas the night before 'Ready to Teach: A Christmas Carol' release and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse...! So excited to hear what people think of our new book.
@SPryke2
and I are really proud of it ☺️
@JohnCattEd
🎉600 reviews for our first book, ‘Ready to Teach: Macbeth’🎉. I wouldn’t usually post a review, but this - our 600th - perfectly encapsulated everything we wanted the book to be, and more, and we are so grateful for it. Thank you, Laura, for your EXTRAORDINARY words!
@SPryke2
The brilliant team
@LitdriveUK
have worked their magic and the sessions
@Spryke2
and I delivered on Saturday can now be watched online. ‘The Porter: ‘Prefigured’’ and ‘Macduff: Misunderstood.’
What a fantastic day
@ThePiXLNetwork
’s first English Festival! I had such a great time - I learned so much, met so many wonderful new people and old friends and have arrived home feeling very inspired and very, very lucky. Thank you,
@RachelPiXL
and
@shorny_m
for having
@SPryke2
Did
@SPryke2
and I see
@AlmeidaTheatre
’s ‘Tragedy of Macbeth’ last Saturday? Yes we did. Did it stop us getting some return tickets earlier this week for this Saturday? No it did not. WHAT a production. Floored by its power and performances. Just magnificent from start to end.
A new blog from me on the importance of allowing students exposure to Literature taught chronologically! (Hope it's at least in someway useful; this blog is my 'difficult second album'!)
Our final subject knowledge session this morning comes courtesy of the almighty
@Xris32
on the impact of Dickens' shorthand on our understanding of his writing. Brilliant stuff!

#ReadytoTeachACC
Almost finished the new Y9 SoL for 'Richard III' I've been working on... a real labour of love but I am also rather excited about it! New to us at KS3, and the students have taken to it brilliantly so far!
“This castle hath a pleasant seat; the air/ Nimbly and sweetly recommends itself/ Unto our gentle senses.” Quick trip to Cawdor Castle (which was not built when Macbeth was king, and which is not the castle in 1:6… 😂) with

@AQAEnglish
I believe it is so everyone has the opportunity to take a paper of each if they then, for e.g. have covid. Exam boards have dropped the required % completion to give a grade, which means one paper of each would be adequate to award a GCSE to candidates.
An evening of writing ‘Ready to Teach Macbeth’ is on the cards, and tonight’s it’s all about unpicking the close of Act II, analysing Macduff and exploring the downfall of the Great Chain of Being. Exciting times!

@JohnCattEd
We're delighted to welcome
@teachals
to the Institute team as Research Lead. Amy brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of curriculum, pedagogy and people development. Welcome to the team Amy!
#ATTIpeopledevelopment
What a remarkable moment! We really stop talking about 'Ready to Teach', but this has blown us both away - 'RTT: Macbeth' has just become a bestseller again, alongside 'RTT: A Christmas Carol'. Wowsers! Thank you!
@SPryke2
and I are so thrilled!
@JohnCattEd
Genuinely incredible results from standardised, 5-a-day literature retrieval in
@Shabnamagram
’s department - 10E4 know tens of quotations readily so they can engage with the big ideas. Love it.

Perhaps requiring lateral thinking (or maybe it’s just a bit of a reach!) but could be used for lunch time queue jumps as a reward! They can join the exclusive “line 1”?
‘100 for 100: Macbeth’ goes to print tomorrow ahead of its release next month.
@SPryke2
and I are VERY excited. What better time to share these wonderful, kind words from the lovely
@msybibi
?

Time to finish planning my session for the
@LitdriveUK
CPD session in Suffolk on Thursday! Super excited to be talking about Macbeth through a feminist lens, and even more excited to hear the other brilliant speakers! Teachers, talking together. Nothing better.
I have written my first blog (!) and uploaded my first resources to
@LitDriveUK
(!), all about The Oulipo and how their work can be used to boost the confidence of reluctant writers. Use/ chuck/ change if you'd like!

Confession time.
@Spryke2
and I got a little bit obsessed with Amadeus from
@NationalTheatre
. We may have seen it five times... and two of those times may have been once in the same day...! We loved it so much that
@Spryke2
bought me this which still adorns my lounge wall today!
@TeacherBusy
@SPryke2
That is so kind of you - thank you! It's made my day ☺️. We are, literally as we speak, working on 'Ready to Teach: A Christmas Carol'... watch this space!

Yes! The witches are one of only two sets of Shakespearean characters who speak in trochaic tetrameter - the others are the fairies in AMSND. Shakespeare never actually calls the witches, 'witches' in the dialogue. Instead, they are 'weird sisters' (1/2)
So sad that this evening is the last chance to watch the
#TENConline
presentations! What an incredible weekend of CPD it's been; I've learned SO much and have so many thoughts and ideas to try out. Thank you,
@TeamEnglishNC
@Team_English1
Already nodding a lot at
@FunkyPedagogy
’s keynote
@FSDConferences
! “If they can’t write, they can’t write a letter to their landlord about the damp… but they also can’t be poets.” Both so important! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Looking through some old violin music - no one offered me a piece of cold roast OR a piece of cold boiled when I learned this c. 2001…! It is also true that I imagine a positive light issued from no one’s calves at the sound of it at the time, either…
First message just sent to my
@LitdriveUK
mentee - really looking forward to working together in the coming year! What a fantastic programme - I'm very lucky to be a part of it!
In absolute floods of tears at the power of
@jazampawfarr
- what an exceptional keynote; the POWER of her words is 🤯. The mot juste. Thank you,
@ThePiXLNetwork
.
Just putting the finishing touches to my
@researchEDWarr
session, ready for this Saturday! Looking forward to exploring how we can promote high think, high participation ratios in every classroom.
Wow. Just finished Coen’s ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ on Apple TV. Held my breath throughout. Understated, thrilling, menacing and utterly beautiful. Arresting and timeless cinematography. A real treat, fit for a (rightful) king. Well worth the wait.

I am *so* very excited to be presenting this year - I completely loved the day last year. We’re really looking forward to sharing some powerful pedagogy that supports the ‘Macbeth’ subject knowledge and resources we’ll be discussing, too!
We are delighted
@SPryke2
and
@teachals
will be joining us to talk about their new book, ‘Ready to Teach: Macbeth’.
We'll announcing more brilliant session leaders every day between now and 1st March - watch this space!

Sunday night marking. “Lo fi hip hop radio” and the trusted ‘piles of five’ approach is seeing me through… plus reading some creative writing my Year 11s have pulled out all the stops on makes it worth every minute.
Another brilliant session, as always, from the inimitable
@FunkyPedagogy
. Lots to think about in terms of the data we can use to QA QoE. And always love a Webbian metaphor!
#rEDWarr2024
I’ve just finished ‘A Little Life.’ What an utterly profound, beautifully written, life-changing book it is. My goodness. I am moved beyond measure by it and will be thinking about them all - but especially Jude, Willem and Harold, for a long time to come.
This goes live at 10am. I really enjoyed putting this session together - the Ghost of Christmas Present is so steeped in myth and tradition; a contextually fascinating character! Would love to know your thoughts!
#litdrivecpd
Tomorrow, Christmas comes early with this gift:
@teachals
will be discussing the Ghost of Christmas Present - from Dionysus to Thomas Malthus!

link shared tomorrow morning at 10 am.
It struck me whilst introducing myself to some new Year 7s on their transition day this morning that today marks a decade to the day since I started at my school as an NQT. I am very lucky to have worked for so long with such an exceptionally supportive Trust (
