BIG NEWS TIME🥳🥳

Everyone trying to reimagine or rebuild journalism must remember one thing: for all the disillusionment, only a restively small segment has given up on journalism.
People still crave it, and they would love us to succeed. That’s a beautiful gift.
Every time a journalist quotes the most extreme view at a rally while making no real effort to understand why people feel that way, a child’s ice cream cone falls on the ground. Think about what you’re doing.
A journalist covering communities in conflict? Just a person stuck in endless arguments?
Take a look at 22 questions you can ask to deepen the conversation:
Well ... it's announcement time. We find ourselves grateful beyond words for this gift, elated to be in the company of so many magnificent organizations, and energized for the road ahead. Let's go.
Following up on the commitment I made last year to give away the majority of my wealth in my lifetime: . (Note my Medium account is under my new last name -- changed back to middle name I grew up with, after my grandfather Scott.)
We’ve gotten a lot of new followers thanks to a generous

So who are we?
We’re an organization devoted to ensuring journalism brings light to society’s options, not just heat to its problems.

If you'd told us 10 years ago that The New Yorker would produce a whole issue filled with climate solutions reporting, we might have said that's the stuff of our wildest hopes for solutions journalism.
And yet here it is.
By eliminating 99% of sugar cane burning, Brazil's São Paulo state gained cleaner air, healthier residents, and stronger farms.
Florida says they can't do that.
So
@propublica
investigated exactly how Brazil does it to show another way is possible.
We're delighted to see lots of new followers. So ... what the heck is solutions journalism?
It's investigative journalism about what's going right.
It's hope with teeth.
And the solutions journalism stories that change the conversation have these four qualities
Say what you want about journalism, but there are actually too many great people working on too many promising, inspiring things for us to keep up with all of them.
There are so many opportunities to get trained in solutions journalism coming up in the next two weeks.
Here's a quick thread with links, details, and dates.
(And a reminder that each is free and open to all.) Let's go:
Even though solutions journalism isn’t about “feeling good” per se, it’s worth saying that journalism that inspires positive emotions isn’t inherently less serious.
Tasting burnt cakes isn’t enough to create great bakers.
Learning about bankrupt companies isn’t enough to build successful businesses.
Watching only terrible movies isn’t enough to create great filmmakers.
Covering failure alone isn’t enough to build healthier societies.
Seriously, thank you. Everyone who interacts with us on here, thank you. Somehow this little corner of the internet is supportive, generous, and caring - not just with us but with each other.
This is a heck of a network. Thank you.

We've seen tons of great resources for journalists for this moment - everything from mental health to grants to jobs to WFH tips. This is by no means exhaustive (there are lots!) but just a few we love.

One of the primary demands of the protest wave sweeping the country is a reduced reliance on policing to address crime and increased funding/support for community-based approaches.

With everyone talking solutions journalism today, we're making lots of friends. But there are also - understandably - lots of questions too.
Isn't that PR? Are we telling people what to do? Nope. It's about applying the same rigor to the problem and what's fixing it. Like this:
For those who don’t know us, we’re just a humble journalism support organization trying to make sure checking the news doesn’t constantly feel like reading Cormac McCarthy’s The Road.

Crack a drink, grab a snack, ask a question. We'll see you there:
If you're writing a solutions-focused story, you'll need four core pieces:
1. A focus on the RESPONSE to a problem and *how* it's done
2. EVIDENCE of effectiveness (or lack thereof)
3. INSIGHTS people can learn from
4. Coverage of the response's LIMITATIONS
Solutions journalism isn’t about finding THE answer. That doesn’t exist. Instead, it’s about investigating effectiveness.
That could mean
- an approach working better than status quo
- moderate success, even with a long way to go
- a response working in some ways but not others

A lot of people (journalists included) have to watch, hear and confront some very painful present and history right now.
There’s a lot of grief. No, it’s not just you. No, it doesn’t have to be this way. Yes, the road is long. Yes, we can make it. Yes, you can grieve.
People don't see solutions journalism as optional in their local news coverage. It's now a must. Audiences agree that reporting on the problems and what's working to address them combine for a healthy news diet. (2/10)

Solutions journalism doesn’t just help audiences reimagine their relationship to issues and power.
One of the most powerful impacts is actually journalists reimagining their relationship to *their own beats.* Reporting on failure and tragedy constantly is ... exhausting.
