Our readers were “Eggsperts” this week in all things reading! They segmented sounds in spoken words, identified and read printed words, sorted and recorded opinions and facts, AND collected Easter eggs! @NicholsSawmill #excellenceinmotion

One thing on our class mascot’s platform was a class carnival, so I made that happen today! We did carnival word races (with suffixes), played heart word bean bag toss, wrote about what carnival ride is the best, and ended the day with carnival handwriting. 🎠🎡🎢🎟️

A new study confirms that reading comprehension strategies work best if combined with background knowledge. And: the effect of 55 hours of instruction is the same as 1 hour. Kids get WAY more than 55 hrs in school. @DTWillingham More in my Forbes post: https://t.co/gnPx08JLCO

A recent study finds that it doesn’t seem to make any difference how much comprehension strategy instruction students get.

Stop asking children to write stories, recipes, reports, and letters before they know what a sentence is. #TheWritingRevolution
@MiriamFein I just think it is so important for students to truly understand the foundation of a sentence. It helps so much with writing. A sentence needs a subject and a predicate. Everything else is an "add on" whether it be an appositive phrase or adjective clause etc.

Data-driven instruction only makes sense if the data makes sense. And much of the data used to guide reading instruction doesn't. My latest Forbes post: https://t.co/SOLtbQnNWE
