August 2024. Did I lie? DID I LIE?!?
I had a very productive meeting today with democratic socialist State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani in Greenwich Village this afternoon. I can’t say much, but politics in the world’s most influential city are about to get a lot more exciting. Keep an eye on this Muslim socialist.

Starting at 1% in the polls, @ZohranKMamdani pulled off one of the great political upsets in modern American history. Yes. We CAN create a government that represents working people and not the 1%. I look forward to working with Zohran as he builds a city that works for all.

As South Asia is in the thick of smog season again, I'm re-upping a thread on my paper that shows that we don't need flashy/ ineffective tools like smog towers/cannons. Instead, there's a lot that can be achieved if existing govt bureaucrats are properly incentivized.
🚨 Just published in @Nature w @gemmadipoppa 🚨 We argue that reducing crop burning in South Asia, responsible for toxic air for 100s of millions, is not completely intractable. We show bureaucrats exert control when incentivized, w large consequences for pub health Details 👇

I haven't been on Twitter in forever, but come back with an important request: what are folks favorite qualitative articles in political science? Especially those recently published in the top journals / those showcasing research in South Asia? Grateful for tips!

🚨NEW PAPER 🚨 Are police more right-wing and biased against marginalized groups than the general public? If so, why? My new article in @PNASNews w/ Reny, Newman, and Sears provides some answers. 🧵1/n

I remember my desperate messages to friends in grad school, asking them if the paper was really *that* bad. I remember the sinking feeling at not getting satisfactory responses. Grad school can truly be a dark time. But I'm grateful for my supporters & my cheerleaders. Thank YOU!

But I persisted & published. The paper shows that the moral hazard of aid [more violence --> more aid] can coexist with an aggregate decline in recipient state violence by displacing violence geographically. It's a paper close to my heart. And it is a sign of my resilience. 4/n

I workshopped it at Aid Withdrawals 2021, PEIO 2022, and got feedback from several senior scholars. Got rejected from a special edition, but here we are. Every time I approached this paper, I was ridden by impostor syndrome (still am!). Reading it became a trauma. 3/n

According to my advisors who read at least 2 versions of this paper, it did not meet NYU's qualifying paper requirements & I was separated from NYU's program at the end of my 4th year. Then a friend asked me to submit it to a workshop during Covid-19. 2/n

📢New Publication! https://t.co/bnpAXSCWjn I've stopped using X, but wanted to announce my first ever solo-authored publication, out in Journal of Conflict Resolution this week. I had the idea for this paper as a grad student at Oxford, and began writing it in 2014 at NYU. 1/n

Congratulations to Zohran Mamdani and his thousands of grassroots supporters for their extraordinary campaign. You took on the political, economic and media Establishment- and you beat them. Now it’s on to victory in the general election.

In the words of Nelson Mandela: it always seems impossible until it’s done. My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it. I am honored to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City.
