you know… if you reboot a franchise specifically to appeal to gen-Z it seems very stupid to fire your main actress for expressing opinions that demo overwhelmingly supports.
I’m not even a big fan of OPPENHEIMER, but I am a critic and I know that so much of the film occurs through the prism of one man’s mind. so when details are left out it means he wasn’t thinking of them. that’s the horror of it. all he was thinking about was making the bomb.
Spyglass, the production company behind ‘SCREAM,’ released this statement following firing Melissa Barrera for her support to Palestine:
“We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing,…
been thinking about this video for days and what really stands out is how angry they seem to be about having to do this? do they not know they come off angry
am so serious when I say that you’re an evil, racist person who is cheerleading for a genocide when you’ve literally never been in danger a moment in your life and wouldn’t even know what to do if you were. you are a wealthy, white supremacist coward.
there is no justification for ethnic cleansing unless you believe, deep in your heart, that an entire population should not exist. I’ve never felt that way about any group of people. I can’t relate and I don’t want to. and i don’t appreciate being pressured into it.
hate when women on here are like “wow, you allow yourself to be treated that way?” jesus christ girl sometimes people have bad experiences and it has nothing to do with being weak, do you talk to your friends like that???
imagine reducing a movie with the most heartbreaking/influential speech for women ever to a movie about “big boobs” like I’m so serious we need to find a way to reproduce without men
the only thing these texts prove is that this woman is in an abusive relationship. she’s apologizing for things that were done TO her directly to the person who did them.
lawyers seem to think that they can trick people into not knowing what abuse looks like. this is it.
I would watch a film about the displacement of the indigenous people in new mexico during and after the development of the atomic bomb. but that deserves to be its own movie. and it should probably be a documentary.
films are not advertisements. a film depicting a sexual assault is not “promoting” sexual assault. you’re not watching A CLOCKWORK ORANGE thinking “man, this is the way to live!” and there’s no reason to bring up kids, because they shouldn’t be watching it in the first place.
More than 450 Jewish creatives, executives and Hollywood professionals have signed an open letter denouncing Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” Oscar speech.
OPPENHEIMER is a movie about white people doing something awful because they’re emotionally and physically removed from the people they are hurting. that’s what the movie is addressing and that’s all it has space to do within its runtime.
ANATOMY OF A FALL is a movie about a woman whose husband was intimidated by her bisexuality and success as a writer. I’m not sure why men are acting like that’s not a woman-centric enough story. triet got her very first best director nom and you’re ignoring that. it’s dishonest.
margot robbie has been producing films since 2017 and just got her first oscar nomination as a producer today.
this is something she obviously cares about or she wouldn’t be doing it. and if you’re actually a fan, you should care too instead of throwing a useless tantrum.
everyone paid attention when we were talking about harvey weinstein and how he abused his power as a producer and yet here we are watching women producers like margot robbie and emma stone do good work and people are acting like it’s less important than acting lol
@judysquirrels
@dutyfreechamp
Greta does not have a nomination for best director though, which is what we’re talking about. and there’s still less than 10 women nominated in a group of like 475 nominated directors since the Oscars began.
as I already said yesterday: gerwig has made 4 films and 3 of them have been nominated for oscars. she got a best directing oscar nom for LADY BIRD. she is not the example of unfairness in the academy. do your homework and do not condescend to me again.
@judysquirrels
Not a useless tantrum.
@TheAcademy
will very likely re-examine the makeup of their directing branch which is said to be primarily an older demographic and 75% male.
I really need people to understand that making a movie about a person or a group of people does not immediately make it an endorsement of those people. a person doesn’t have to be nice or good for someone to make a film about them.
(takes a deep breath)
why would he be there? why would he let it start if he was right there? why would they be fighting near a movie star? where are they? why does it look like a set? what could possibly be the context? how is he disney rich with PR this bad?
Margot Robbie says "there's no reason to feel sad" over her Oscar snub for best actress.
“Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director. What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films...We set out to…
1) once a person hits 30 this kind of analysis means absolutely nothing
2) the OPPENHEIMER age gap is historically accurate, be a fucking adult
3) in POOR THINGS mark ruffalo’s character is supposed to be a bad, predatory guy
none of this make sense. we’re too old for this.
I’m not really sure why the comments made here have warranted any sort of discourse at all. it’s his people, it’s their pain, it belongs to them.
after reading the book I’ve been thinking a lot about white people’s interpretation of “loving” people they see as inferior to them.
the fatphobia and misogynoir is still tired. the victims are still plus-sized women of color. you’re not supporting them by talking like that, you’re just being ugly and dusty and pathetic and annoying. a disgrace to your parents and the human race. never forget that!
hate the idea that you’re not a real leftist or feminist unless you impose an exclusively political framework on every single movie that comes out, it’s just a limited way of approaching art. there’s more to talk about!
it’s fascinating to me that writing is the backbone of society (we learn everything from text!) but people seem to think it’s both 1) the easiest job in the world and 2) a job only privileged people pursue and thus shouldn’t complain about how little it pays.
this sentiment reminds me of when my humanities class in college went to visit a mosque because we were studying all the religions. and the people there were so sweet and funny and kind. but christian students specifically were so ugly to them and it ruined the whole thing.
anyone who defines womanhood solely by pain is a deeply unserious person to me. you’re likely transphobic, your concept of womanhood is unhealthy for you and the people around you, and your politics are based in fear. that’s not feminism to me. dunno what that is.
jonathan glazer has made 4 features and you should watch them all:
sexy beast
birth
under the skin
the zone of interest
and he’s british so regardless of what hollywood thinks, im sure he’ll get to make another film!
people say they want challenging films and then don’t watch them, then they look at wide-released mainstream entertainment and crack open the theory books lol
not knowing james baldwin’s politics is a real failure of the whole “black excellence” industrial complex. it means you think his identity is the only interesting and important thing about him. it ignores his writing and the things he actually said. and he had A LOT to say.
reminder that the IDF trains our police. so if you’re only worried about what’s happening here because the middle east is “far away”, understand that’s not the case. our country funds that genocide and brings that brutality right back here.
i’ve only been watching post-9/11 films for a little over a week now but it’s already immediately clear to me that most western audiences have perhaps never considered muslims (or sikhs, who are often mistaken for muslim) as fully human. it’s so blatant.
GIRLS is a great show. the creators failed in some very key ways. but it’s interesting to me how people can acknowledge other flawed creators made work that’s good but for this show in particular it’s apparently not okay to say the writing was really special.
beyond the ableism of it all, the r-word literally makes you sound like you’re 14 years old, it’s 2007, and you’re mad you can’t afford tickets to warped tour so you and your friends are about to go shoplift from spencers gifts
you sound like a child!
refuse to engage with wes anderson discourse because everyone is too weird about him, he’s just a nice boy from texas with a distinct visual style and playful dialogue
if you made it to the end of GIRLS you know the penultimate episode is shoshanna having her engagement party and basically declaring to hannah, marnie and jessa that she doesn’t want to be friends anymore. the show knew these people were annoying! from the beginning to the end!
can’t think about the state of film criticism too long or my eye starts twitching, but I do think part of it is people just aren’t interested in reading anymore. another part is they take different opinions as an attack instead of just like, an interesting thing to read.
Went to the (Brooklyn) library today. Bunch of people were there trying to get in. Two cops were being paid to guard the door and say "Library is closed due to budget cuts" to everyone
people just casually posting that all arabs are homophobic when there are queer arabs on this very website who can see what you’re saying? do you know how racist you sound? come on now lol let’s be serious
margot robbie is a great actress but she’s also the most regular, “one of the boys” chicks working in hollywood lol she’s not going to make thoughtful choices about who she works with and i’m not sure why anyone would assume she would
now if that’s not a story you’re interested in, you don’t have to watch it. and I mean that in the most neutral tone possible. don’t watch something you don’t care about. seek out something more meaningful to you.
really think it’s time for a conversation about the predatory nature of acquiring “diverse” films at festivals, only making them available on streaming for a short period of time, and then not even having enough respect for them to make them available to rent or own.
some of my favorite movies directed by women from the last decade with 0 nominations:
showing up
shirley
the nightingale
certain women
kajillionaire
you were never really here
leave no trace
saint omer
private life
hustlers
the souvenir 1 & 2
wild nights with emily
i hate when people do this. I don’t expect directors to be good people or have my moral code. I’m not recommending them to my friend for a date! i don’t know these people!
#Oppenheimer
crossed $891M at the worldwide box office.
It needs just $20M to surpass Bohemian Rhapsody and become the highest-grossing biopic of all time.
Jamie Lee Curtis, the daughter of Oscar nominees Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, on the current "nepo babies" discourse: "There are many of us. Dedicated to our craft. Proud of our lineage. Strong in our belief in our right to exist.”
