Thinking about those of my lecturers who are as of today working for free due to QMUL's brutal and unjust 100% wage deductions for ASOS. If I had to work for no pay at my workplace, I wouldn't show up at all; goes to show who really does care about students, though.

I'm just gonna say it: universities do not care about students. They don't care about our degrees or our education. They don't care about our safety, our mental health, or our housing and finances. Crackdowns on staff have been accompanied by crackdowns on student protest.

Just a reminder: not a single university with a solidarity encampment has actually divested yet (AFAIK). Task forces, committees, and promises of "looking into"/voting on divestment are progress but they are not the goal; in fact they are a de-escalation tactic.

Lastly, the recently announced decision to pursue 100% deductions from staff who are not themselves participating in the boycott, but refuse to take on additional marking, is punitive, and may have unintended consequences. 10/10

Another reason to avoid thinking about uni students as a monolith. I was working ~25hrs (sometimes over 30) per week for most of my undergrad degree while two of my flatmates had all their expenses (rent included) covered by their parents.
Genuinely baffled as to how this is a headline? Students have had to balance studies with paid work for years now - especially those from working class backgrounds, & it sucks. Where have you been BBC?

This speaks a lot to how trans men are actually incompatible to the transphobic narrative. There's a reason as to why we're invisibled so as to make trans women seem like the threat.
Transmisogyny is seeing articles like "Lia Thomas Beaten By Trans Swimmer Iszac Henig" and assuming that the other trans person is a trans woman.
Iszac is a trans man who has not started HRT required to compete in the male category.
Of course trans women get 100% of backlash.

At a UCU/Unison cross-union meeting a cleaner described how their "bodies ache" because of work and how it's all done "for the students". It's these people who care about students. It's staff, and not just teaching staff either. VCs aren't the ones who ache.

SOAS, currently imposing 120% pay cuts for MAB, hired private bailiffs to evict occupiers. QMUL, imposed 100% pay cuts last year, called the police on students peacefully blockading a building. What they do to staff they also do to us.

In case this wasn't obvious: rescheduling would also place undue pressure on students, who are just about to enter exam period. QMUL management is not only cracking down on staff in a spectacularly cruel way, but also throwing the very students they claim to protect under the bus
In another packed branch meeting, members overwhelmingly voted to take local strike action in response to management confirming they will deduct 26 days for the 6 days of strike in February.

86 days of deductions.
In case anyone still had any doubt whether these deductions were punitive and disproportionate: 86 days of deductions, in some cases for a couple of hours’ work.

(I'm also fully aware that unis are heavily bureaucratised institutions and that committees and slow progress are kind of their whole thing. That doesn't change the fact that undelivered promises remain undelivered until they're delivered. So make sure they deliver.)

I do not say this to dismiss the achievements of students so far; progress is great! But the job's not done yet. Promises can be reneged on, ostensibly great initiatives can be (purposefully!) drowned in bureaucracy and forgotten about, and management can vote not to divest.

I've had an amazing experience studying my BA; and that's because of the staff who teach me, design modules, hold office hours and write feedback. That *is* delivering education, and burnt-out, underpaid staff cannot do that. They have the right to take industrial action
