In May 2025, UCU Congress voted overwhelmingly to open a trade dispute with the Secretary of State for Education on funding. The union's grassroots is now pushing for a full moratorium on redundancies, closures & cuts as red lines in the UCEA dispute.

But the crisis runs deeper. Industrial action against employers alone isn’t enough—we must tackle the root cause: an unjust, unsustainable funding system. That’s GUCU and other branches are pushing to open a trade dispute with the UK Government.

UCU & other unions are demanding: • Pay rises in line with inflation • Joint action on workload & casualisation • Real progress on gender, disability & ethnicity pay gaps • A national agreement to stop redundancies, course closures & cuts to disciplines.

Our sector is in crisis. Since 2023, at least 102 universities have faced redundancies or local disputes (@qm_ucu data). Over 20,000 HE jobs have been lost. Even Universities UK now admits we need a new funding settlement and to move away from marketisation.

With the UNHRC declaring Israel’s actions in Gaza a genocide, today we passed a motion calling on the UK government to open evacuation routes for Palestinians with UK university offers, and to stop subjecting them to extraordinarily harsh visa rules.

No need to point out that by using punitive deductions against staff on ASOS, our own national leadership is setting a TERRIBLE precedent—and it won’t help when employers use the same intimidation tactics on us. It's cruel and bafflingly irresponsible.
