We need to stop using the term ‘retained’. It implies the patient was responsible for the non return of the swab or instrument. They were either forgotten at the time of surgery, or staff failed to communicate vaginal packs needed later removal. #patientsafety

Such an important essay on the challenges in smear uptake among women with vaginismus - who are just expected to put up with it like so many other areas of women’s health. There are woman-centred solutions, from self sampling to dedicated clinics. We owe it to women to sort this.

It may be of interest that in 🇦🇺 where sterile water injections in labour have been in use for longer that the national maternity 'service user' group - Maternity Choices Australia - is pretty keen for @NICEComms not to be put off from including this option in "guidelines".
