In Oct we asked our attorney
@Deliver8tor
to assemble an expert legal team to respond to FinCEN's proposed rules that would effectively ban bitcoin privacy best practices such as not reusing addresses, and coinjoin.
Last night our letter was submitted
We can confirm that
@ocean_mining
has enacted a policy of censoring Whirlpool coinjoin transactions and BIP47 notification transactions as of Dec 6, 2023
This is a regrettable action by the operators
@jack
and
@LukeDashjr
and far surpasses any hostile action we have seen before
We will continue to write and publish free and open source code for improving privacy on Bitcoin.
Fear is subjugation.
Code is speech.
Privacy is a human fight.
We will not stop fighting.
As of today, financial institutions with be “authorized or directed” to “prohibit the use of property” or freeze accounts - personal or corporate- if the institution suspects that the account holder is financing illegal blockades.
Gatekeep all you want. We'll bulldoze right through you like we've unapologetically done since day one.
Cross chain atomic swaps between BTC and XMR are here, we've been hard at work to make it a reality, wipe the tears from your delicate little laser eyes.
Our understanding of AOPP is it that is some sort of API that wallet developers can incorporate that will automatically 'prove' ownership of a non custodial wallet to the exchange where the user is withdrawing from.
Here is why Samourai Wallet won't include support for AOPP
Good faith, my ass
1) You still have me blocked
2) We had a call last night where it was made clear by your lawyer that unless we conformed to your non standard dogmas that we would continue to be filtered.
3) We are not negotiating with your pool. We will not justify our Txs
Luke claims the 42 byte limit has existed for years and we just chose to ignore that. Yet on his own maintained fork he forgot to change the code comment which clearly states the 80 byte default setting.
Why does he continue to lie?
On March 11 we were approached by the Financial Times to respond to a story that would be published where the National Crime Agency (UK) calls for regulation of CoinJoin. One wallet seemingly folded immediately to this pressure. Our response in full below
If you have recently received a very small amount of BTC in your wallet unexpectedly, you may be the target of a "dusting attack" designed to deanonymise you by linking your inputs together - Samourai users can mark this utxo as "Do Not Spend" to nip the attack in the bud.
We're proud to release the Bitcoin Privacy Series on youtube today. The first 7 videos are all under 7 minutes long and will get you up to speed on the challenging concept that is bitcoin privacy.
Check out the playlist & like and sub for more videos
We are proud to announce the public release and open sourcing of Samourai Dojo. You no longer need to make the trade off of providing Samourai with your public keys in order to access the most private Tx analysis busting tools. Have your cake and eat it.
If you are currently pointing hashpower at Ocean we would ask you to reconsider and point your hashpower to another pool. It is important for the market to make it absolutely clear to the pool that you do not agree with their privacy enhancing transaction censorship policy.
If your bitcoin wallet is asking you to verify your identity you need to get a new bitcoin wallet. For your own safety and privacy do NOT connect personally identifiable information to your bitcoin transactions whenever possible.

30% off all Whirlpool mixing fees from right now until March 21 end of day (UTC).
No blacklists. No censorship. No chain surveillance firm. No deterministic links. Refugees absolutely welcome.

Congrats you just saved yourself $100+ on a "hardware wallet" that you need to write down the 12 words for anyway
7 years ago today
@SamouraiDev
and I were sitting in a seedy London pub writing down our mission statement on a damp bar napkin
We can't believe how far the project has come nor how full our backlog still is. Join us as we look back at an abridged timeline of the last 7 years
Monero is closer to our hearts than whatever Bitcoin is turning into today.
Compliance Bros, Sat Stackers, Hodl Monomaniacs, The Custodial Apologists, Closed Source Cucks.
Are we shifting to XMR? No. We're staying right here to remind you of what this is supposed to be about
Why we CoinJoin, a thread.
First we need to look at the existing fiat system we are hoping to ultimately replace, the privacy expectations of that fiat system, and how we can achieve a similar outcome when using the Bitcoin network.
We're pleased to announce the first step in decentralizing Whirlpool coinjoin is now live!
We have launched simultaneous updates for Samourai Wallet, Whirlpool GUI/CLI, and Dojo - Update your clients today to begin making use of decentralized Whirlpool

Congrats to these projects for strength & resolve to listen to the community. Congrats to the community who successfully made their desires known
We hope developers of non custodial bitcoin software will reconsider normalizing this kind of regulatory overeach by refusing to support the AOPP in their software.
We hope users who use service providers that require this kind of overreach reconsider their option to use them
We are proud to have joined the
@torproject
as Vidalia Onion members. We make tremendous use of the open source software maintained by the project and are very pleased to pledge on-going support for the important work they do
Don't fuck with us and don't fuck with bitcoin privacy
@ocean_mining
Over 100 PH/s pulled from Ocean since we revealed they have enacted a policy of censoring Whirlpool and other privacy enhancing transactions.
This is just the beginning
Use a passphrase people.
The pigs are trained to look for 12/24 words on steel/paper/etc and seize immediately.
With a secure passphrase in your brain seizing your coins is not possible, even if they have the mnemonic.
Passphrase is required in Samourai Wallet since day one
The Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Bill just passed UK Parliament. The bill gives broad powers to local law enforcement, allowing them to "seize crypto with criminal links without a conviction."
Sad but true,
@GooglePlay
is forcing us to remove Stealth Mode, SMS Commands, and SIM Switch Defense features as they transition to becoming more of a "Walled Garden" - despite the fact these features have proven record of helping users transact safely.
Luke runs a fork of Core called Knots, in his fork he has defined the OP_RETURN limit at 42 bytes. He is more than entitled to do this.
However to claim Whirlpool transactions are non standard because they do not conform to the values of his niche fork is totally wrong and a lie
We're glad to be the first sponsor of the important Haveno-DEX, which is a fork of Bisq (without plans for the insidious custodial Liquid layer) with a 0.18 BTC grant.
A privacy first, KYC-free on/off ramp is essential for privacy seeking bitcoin users
CoinJoin coordinators are simply message passers. This is true of Wasabi & Whirlpool. They are not money transmitters, they are not facilitators they simply pass data packets to connected clients. Clients never surrender custody to any 3rd party. Clients collaborate w/ each other
On this day 6 years ago
@SamouraiDev
and myself decided to go ALL IN and build the bitcoin wallet we desperately wanted to see & use.
Since then:
-Whirlpool
-Dojo
-Soroban
-STONEWALL
-Stowaway
-Ricochet
-PayNym stealth addresses
-Coin control
-Batch spend
...
What a wild ride
We've been hard at work building out full offline mode for Samourai Wallet. The next few updates will enable many new options such as offline broadcasting via SMS or
@gotenna
mesh network. Roll your own always offline cold storage with your unused android anyone? 👌
With all the chatter about the latest statist overeach in the EU regarding bitcoin and 'unhosted wallets' I figured I would share some slides from my talk at

It won't be long before every bitcoin node will be able to act as a Whirlpool coordinator. A sword behind every blade of grass.
No rights are given, they are only taken. If you believe you have the right to privacy and you're not willing to fight for it, you have nothing.
On this day 8 years ago
@SamouraiDev
and I went all in
We decided that if we wanted to see a privacy first wallet we would need to build it ourselves. So we did.
We're proud of what we have brought to the market and even more proud seeing our tech implemented in other wallets
1) we don't have a CEO
2) we have no presence at
#Miami2022
3) we don't appreciate doxxing attempts
4) this is a weak way to try and get people to forget Wasabi is working with chain surveillance firms and implementing blacklists
A massive warm hearted thank you to whoever sent 1 BTC to our donation address earlier today. This donation will make a huge immediate impact. Seriously, thank you!
Thank you all for joining us on this journey we started 9 years ago.
We have continually built and deployed Bitcoin privacy tools at breakneck pace.
According to our numerous haters we're supposed to be out of business by now. Bad news for them, no chance of us slowing down
Ocean investors down bad.
If you want to regain your hashrate (maybe) stop censoring transactions. It is no surprise the vast majority of Bitcoin users (including miners) do not stand with censorship.
It would also help if CTO Luke would stop getting caught in insane lies
We have further self defensive weapons at our disposal that may be deployed if Ocean obtains significant hash power.
We humbly ask that miners point their hashpower to any other pool to send a strong market signal to the would be censors.
Don't let them get away with this.
Luke is claiming that Whirlpool transactions are "bugged" and create non standard transactions due to a 46 byte OP_RETURN present in Whirlpool Tx0 transactions.
This is a lie. He knows it is a lie. The OP_RETURN limit has been 80 bytes since Bitcoin Core version 0.12
PayNym fixes this.
PayNym is a stealth address implementation for bitcoin.
With a PayNym you can receive bitcoin directly into your wallet without providing a traceable address.
No address means no starting point to surveillance and no possible way to comply with blacklist.
We have independently confirmed that the Canadian RCMP has sent out a blacklist notice to regulated Canadian bitcoin companies telling them to report any activity from 29 bitcoin addresses connected to the Canadian Freedom Convoy, including the HonkHonkHodl fundraiser address.
There is no place for SJW style behaviour in
#Bitcoin
. Expect to be called out and relentlessly ridiculed, no matter who you are or what you may have done in the past. There are no sacred cows here.
Don't hand over your email. Don't hand over your name. Don't hand over your social media.
Don't hand over any personally identifiable information to use Bitcoin, no matter how new and shiny the latest toy is.
The biggest gaping security hole is the one you dig yourself.
We're seeing a large number of coins leaving Wasabi into Whirlpool over the last few days. The market is speaking and loudly repelling censorship and surveillance.
If you're new, especially coming from Wasabi this thread will explain the key differences in Whirlpool
No. That is the exact reaction they want you to have.
They want you self censor yourself by gaslighting you into believing that the pursuit of basic financial privacy is abnormal.
The pursuit of privacy is fundamentally human and normal anyone saying otherwise is your enemy.
For those new to Samourai Wallet a little story
In 2018 Bitpay, the largest merchant processor ended support for standard QR in favor of "Bitcoin Payment Protocol". We were among the only wallet to refuse implementing. On Jan 2 2018 our users could no longer pay Bitpay invoices
Unfortunately the action of Ocean deciding to censor privacy enhancing transactions is yet another example of the dilution of cypherpunk roots of the bitcoin project.
Corporate interests in collusion with state actors to deny the peer to peer electronic cash system we inherited
Damage control, Narrative shifting, Straw manning. All par for the course
In the end all that matters is hash rate. The fact is Ocean hasn't recovered the lost hash since their anti privacy policies were revealed
Our tx's continue to be mined with or without their permission
We're happy to share the first of a four part educational series by
@ErgoBTC
designed to take you from zero to hero in understanding the intricacies of bitcoin privacy, how chain analysis works and how to use
@oxt_btc
to audit your own transactions.
We're extremely excited to announce the release of wallet version 0.99.98g - The Stealth Mode update!
You can now disguise your wallet as one of four decoy apps
Get it now on Google Play, F-Droid, or direct download APK
Ocean is choosing to pursue a very slippery slope in their decision to exclude privacy enhancing transactions
Unfortunately we are not surprised as Luke has previously been caught censoring transactions and deploying blacklists for transactions he believes are sinful in the past
Exclusive Samourai nodl is in production. Red, fast, enhanced physical security, and running Dojo by default for plug and play sovereignty. Orders open soon.

Samourai users are paying the lowest transaction fees according to - Don't use wallets that abuse their users. No Android device? Use
@GreenAddress
- If you don't want to use Samourai install
@ElectrumWallet
- This isn't marketing, this is common sense.
What miner fee will get you into the next block without overpaying?
We're pleased to launch to help select the right fee when building your bitcoin transactions.
Our next gen fee estimation algorithm, NextBlock will be built into Samourai next release.
Bitcoin will not bend the knee for you, your business, or anyone else. Bitcoin will not compromise. That's a feature not a bug.
You lunatics forked yourself off, now you can deal with the consequences and the "vicious attacks".
1) Undermines self custody. Ironically proponents of this say this will promote self custody by providing a regulated pathway. That is nonsense and by buying into this system you are legitimizing the concept that self custody requires permission & compliance.
This is very bad news. Ziya has contributed enormously to advance education of Bitcoin privacy. We hope he is released safely soon. If anyone has any additional info please DM. We want to help in any way we can.
Users who choose to make use of exchanges in hostile jurisdictions (like Switzerland) can of course manually sign a message with their private key, but we will NOT be facilitating this communication in any way using any API.
Samourai will not be a pipeline to mass surveillance.
Nothing quite like eating your own dogfood.
Mixing BTC in Whirlpool
Swapping the unmixed change to XMR
Offering the XMR as liquidity to obtain BTC
Mixing the swapped BTC in Whirlpool
Rinse. Repeat. All non custodial. All permissionless. All unstoppable.
Even during this period of high miner fees, Whirlpool has been hitting all time highs, surpassing 9,700 BTC today. Our users have decided that the expense of the miners fees are worth paying for the privacy improvement they receive.
Miners should be glad to accept their fees
Successfully completed internal testing of multi-person Whirlpool collaborative Tx. 5 people spread across 3 countries, a single Whirlpool cycle, an off the charts Boltzmann score. All without ever giving up private keys or trusting a 3rd party.
Open source non custodial wallets are the door to the space beyond the regulated choke-points, but without unmovable red lines a culture of compliance takes over and next comes capture
Our red lines are clear, since 2015 we have proven them to be unmovable and will continue to.
We don't ask for your name.
We don't ask for your email address.
We don't ask for your ID.
We don't ask for your mailing address.
We don't log your IP - don't believe us? Run Tor, it's built in.
We don't share XPUB info - don't believe us? Run Dojo, it is free and open source
@HODLHanger
@MrHodl
If not using Dojo then we store a copy of the extended public keys so that we can provide balance and transaction information to the user from our node. If they use Dojo we do not get this info at all.
Besides that there is nothing else to store. No email, no name, nothing.
Whirlpool users should not worry. We have been fighting since day one, and will continue to fight against this latest attack. And make no mistake, this is an attack.
We are already in discussions with miners to provide our transactions out of band, bypassing the mempool entirely
Merry Christmas to everyone except Ocean mining pool and Liability Luke
We wish you and your loved ones a happy Christmas with plenty of joy and a prosperous New Year 🎄
Seriously. We are unbanked. We rely solely on bitcoin to transact and interact with the meatspace around us. We create software for people like us. We walk the walk and eat our own dogfood. Join us or don't. It doesn't really matter.
@SUDOWHOAMI
@GreenAddress
@ElectrumWallet
We're bitcoin users first and foremost. Doing the right thing is easy. Wallets and services that do otherwise should be regarded as highly suspect!
Excited to see the first Whirlpool transaction hitting mainnet. Every Whirlpool transaction is 100% max possible entropy, 100% max wallet efficiency, with 0 deterministic links. Every. single. time.
A very sincere thank you
@aantonop
for putting together this fantastic video highlighting STONEWALL, Ricochet and other Samourai Wallet functionality. Great information for users trying to interact with bitcoin privately
You asked and we delivered. Latest version of Samourai includes "Batch Spend" - Combine single TX's into one batched TX for huge fee reductions & increased blockchain efficiency. Available now on Google Play Store now. Check out the blog post for more
Understanding Bitcoin Privacy with OXT
A four part crash course in bitcoin privacy and blockchain analysis. Users armed with this knowledge are better prepared for evaluating the implications of spending and receiving and can begin to take steps to protect their privacy. 👇
It is absolutely essential that any truckers who received bitcoin yesterday from
@HonkHonkHodl
do not attempt to cash out using a centralized exchange.
These funds are subject to a Mareva injunction and violation of that order is a criminal act
Wallet users, today's update is a big one: Full bech32 support - send and receive - Introducing Samourai to Boltzmann. Adding a new type of send to help protect against address clustering analysis: STONEWALL. Enhanced Ricochet updates and more...
Over 3,000 BTC unspent capacity in Whirlpool as of today. Unbelievable. This is more than public LN capacity (1500 BTC) and Liquid capacity (2900 BTC)
Financial privacy is not only popular, it is a prerequisite for a free society. Don't ask for permission, just do it.
The point is, as the bitcoin project matures and adoption increases, regulatory pressure will be both overt and covert. The importance of the open source non custodial wallet developers cannot be overstated.
The wallet is most powerful tool you will use in bitcoin.
In case you haven't noticed, we don't have some ditzy chick who spent 4 years at university to learn how to tweet running this account.
You know exactly where we stand. We don't mince words.
You get what you get, don't like it? Unfollow/Block/Mute and move on with your life.
We're excited to launch our updated today. We have a brand new look to better tie in with the new android UI being rolled out, expanded information on all of our current features and have begun to introduce a few upcoming features and products as well. 👌
Coming soon to Samourai Wallet: Batch spending allows you to group together different sends to create more cost efficient transactions. Won't be long now ;)
A statement regarding atomic swaps and Twitter mobs.
Unbelievably, we must issue a statement regarding the addition of atomic swap technology to Samourai Wallet as "cancel culture" has successfully crept into the blind maximalist subculture of Bitcoin.
What could and should have been a cypherpunk dream is quickly turning to a dystopian hellish nightmare.
The smoothbrains cheer and holler, not knowing they're building the chains of their own enslavement. Vile.
Whirlpool users spent a total of 0.44767428 BTC in miner fees for their Tx0 transactions in the first week of Dec
Mine with
@ocean_mining
& you'll be unable to earn those fees, since they censor those transactions. More BTC for honest miners. The system works.
Pull your hash!
On April 9 2017 we turned on our 0.14 UASF enforcing bitcoin nodes fully intending to reject all blocks not signaling Segwit by Aug 1 2017.
We are proud to be among the first to support the User Activated Soft Fork and are extremely thankful to
@shaolinfry
for his pivotal role.
Currently testing version of Samourai Wallet with much improved built in Tor (no more needing an external Tor app) which is a prerequisite for connecting to your Dojo full node.
We don't yet attribute malice to the people behind the AOPP nor the developers who have made the decision to implement this API into their software. The endeavor is no doubt some misguided quest to improve experience for users.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions
