For Father’s Day, 2024
My beloved father was brought up in Mount Lavinia in what was then Ceylon, 5 minutes from a beach looking onto the Indian Ocean.
Never happier than when he was by the sea: here on honeymoon in Cornwall.
Oh dear! There’s an ‘entertainment’ going on in the care home. After the second number, everyone applauded. When they’d finished, my mother called out emphatically, ‘I hope that’s the end of it!’
Eric Satie took this photo of Claude Debussy & Igor Stravinsky in the library of Debussy’s home in Paris in 1912–13.
Christie’s sold this rare gelatin silver print for $2,233 in 2001.

So excited that “I Claudius” is being repeated.
As a child, the moment that iconic theme music began & the snake slithered its way across the opening titles, I was firmly ushered out with the comment “It’s unsuitable.” How I longed to watch it—& when I did, it didn’t disappoint.
Recently I saw Dame Janet at Wigmore Hall as we were congratulating András Schiff. I mentioned I’d met her as a girl when she was alto soloist in the Bach Choir StMP & I was one of the choir ripieno. She took both my hands, pressed them & smiled at me. It felt like being blessed.
Quote for the day:
Bach is like an astronomer who with the help of ciphers finds the most wonderful stars...Beethoven embraced the universe with the power of his spirit...I do not climb so high...I decided that my universe will be the soul & heart of man
(Fryderyk Chopin)
64 years ago a young Italian pianist walked onto the stage in Warsaw for the 1st round of the Chopin Competition. He went on to wow the judges, Rubinstein commenting that he could play better than them.
He was 18 years old.
His name was Maurizio Pollini.
RIP LARS VOGT 🙏🕯
Please take a moment to listen to this recording from April.
I always felt Lars’ Brahms was really special, but this, this was extraordinary. Everything about the human condition distilled into Op 118/2.
What a v great man we have lost
Once upon a time music was viewed as an essential part of education. Along with mathematics, geometry and astronomy, it formed the quadrivium of liberal arts.
A shame that the value of music in education is not sufficiently recognised today.
During Bach’s time, polyphonic music, alongside mathematics and patterns found in nature/natural laws was considered among the miracles of the universe and a proof of God and the divine plan. Watch to discover more about my approach to Bach.
@DGclassics
On such a sad ceremonial day
@PetrocTrelawny
's commentary from Westminster was perfect. His voice conveyed human warmth & gravitas & was used only to give us information that enhanced our appreciation of the sad event—there was no gratuitous content. The jewel in the BBC's crown.
Italian aromas flooding the kitchen: olive oil, garlic and rosemary; then plum tomatoes and cannellini beans. To be served on gently warming herb foccaccia. My ultimate comfort food…
How especially poignant it must be for Princes William and Harry to walk behind their grandmother’s coffin, 25 years after they performed this sad duty, as children, for their mother Diana, Princess of Wales…
I love this photograph of Brahms with the pianist Henriette Hemala (1873–1959), a pupil of Julius Epstein, at the entrance to Villa Miller-Aichholz, c.1893 (thanks to
@klhamilton
for identifying her). They both look so happy.

So very sad to hear of the death of the very great Italian pianist Maurizio Pollini. So fortunate to have heard him playing Chopin live.
Grazie, Maestro.
BBC Radio3 listeners, What do you think of the new programming?
My 1st thoughts
Extra 1/2 hr for Petroc’s Breakfast👏
Clemency Burton-Hill returning👏
New Sara Mohr-Pietsch prog.👏
Big minus—Record Review moving to shorter pm slot. My weekend starts there
The 43-year-old Ethel Smyth sat for John Singer Sargent in 1901. He asked to draw her at the piano while she was singing: Smyth recalled him requesting her "to sing the most desparately exciting songs I knew". The resulting charcoal portrait really captures her energy.
JEG's brilliant dismantling of the BBC's rationale for axeing
@bbcsingers
& cutting orchestras on Radio 4 today was followed by a repetition of the 'quality, agility & impact' soundbite.🥱
Really BBC, when the rest of the classical music world says the opposite, time for a U-turn
Seriously BBC your strategy sucks. Do we encourage amateur sport by axeing funding for elite sportspeople? No, we reward them & they encourage & inspire amateurs & future talent alike. The same applies to music. You don't encourage choral music by axeing
@bbcsingers
—shame on you
Sarah Bernhardt was not only the most celebrated actress of her age—she was also a trained sculptress. “Après la tempête” 1876 depicts a Breton woman whose story had deeply moved her, cradling the body of her grandson caught in a fisherman’s net in a pose reminiscent of the Pietà
Lovely to have tea and cake with my mother. She finds it almost impossible to write but she made a really special effort with this. Happy Birthday is now habitually Happy Mirthday which I love!
A VERY special evening in prospect at
@wigmore_hall
where Sir András Schiff will give a lecture and then perform the whole of Bach’s Art of Fugue.
Three hours of magic…
Magic moment when HM the King, as Patron of
@RoyalOperaHouse
, joins Maestro Pappano, the orchestra, chorus, and soloists—not forgetting dear
@PetrocTrelawny
—onstage after the fabulous gala!
What a night!👏👏👏
It’s my birthday but it’s freezing cold in the flat so I’m keeping warm by dancing along to Madonna’s “la Isla Bonita” on repeat and pretending I’m sipping cocktails on a tropical island.
Glad that there are still balloons on Twitter/X—I love them!
"If you ever feel cynical about social media ... Steven Isserlis is a benign, positive, and generous presence... I find his tweets/X absolutely essential."
Well said,

My mother, after a couple of mouthfuls of the main course:
“I’m feeling so full…”
And after she sees that there’s chocolate mousse for dessert:
“I wonder if I can eat more than one?”
Love Hayato Sumino’s Polonaise-fantaisie. The tone he creates on that Steinway is beautiful. A very clean sound which I like—you can hear Chopin’s classical roots in his playing.
Quote for the day 3.10.21
Delacroix wrote “Cher Chopin” below this drawing of Chopin made shortly after his death.
Chopin as Dante. So apt. Chopin the exile is the poet of the piano, of every emotion from despair to ecstasy.
And very dear to so many of us.
#Chopincompetition
Quotes for the day 16.10.21
After playing Chopin, I feel as if I had been weeping over sins that I had never committed & mourning over tragedies that were not my own. Music always seems to me to produce that effect.
Music is the art that is most nigh tears & memory

What a lovely sight: pristine grass on Centre Court on the 1st day of

But please
@BBCSport
, let’s have an option to hear on-court sounds while muting the commentary. Andrew Castle never stops talking—he should take a leaf out of Tim Henman’s book: Less is more.
The instrument with 88 keys is celebrated today—the 88th day of the year.

When Radu Lupu died it was trending on Twitter in other European countries but not UK. Classical music increasingly sidelined.
@bbcnews
needs to do better. No mention even of British musicians like Harrison Birtwistle… Maybe consult with colleagues on

63 Bayswater Rd, built in the 1860s, was once 2 Marlborough Gate, home to the royal consul of Italy. Each time I pass I marvel at its beautiful bay window. Designed & installed by William Arthur Smith Benson of the Arts & Crafts mvt, it’s the only example of its type to survive.
So very sad to hear Sir Andrew Davis has died. He was a very special conductor and a joy to work with - an opinion I know I share with all my

My elderly mother is in a care home & very scared. Several times I've had to comfort her crying down the phone thinking I must be ill because I haven't been able to visit. So many haven't been able to be with loved ones at the end. How dare the PM justify DC breaking lockdown
Is there a brighter smile in the world of music than

incl a beautiful rendition of one of the loveliest songs ever written, Fauré’s “En sourdine” & Madeleine Dring’s v moving setting “Take o take those lips away”
Of all the sights from today, this is surely one of the most touching.
The Queen’s pony Emma waits to say a final goodbye as the coffin approaches Windsor Castle.
We were told that this afternoon in the care home, the residents had been “listening to some lovely music” (it was André Rieux…)
One of the carers decided to do a little dance in front of my mother.
My mother’s response: “I think you’d better sit down.”
Happy Birthday to the great Marilyn Horne!
So fortunate to have heard her live at Covent Garden singing Isabella in L’Italiana in Algeri in the late 80s—a Midland Bank prom.
This evening will linger long in my memory as one of the most sublime music performances I have ever witnessed.
When Jean Rondeau plays the harpsichord, there is no more expressive instrument.
When he plays Bach
@wigmore_hall
it is transcendental.
If anyone should ever need to organise a music fundraiser,
@PetrocTrelawny
making martinis to order would be a wonderful addition! Looks a complete natural behind the bar…
What do you think of “Sound of Cinema Sunday”,
@BBCRadio3
listeners?
I love film music but for me this is just too much—one pre-Oscars programme & some examples dotted throughout the day would better cater for a variety of tastes.
@classicjacko
My mother is clearly a “disruptor”! Today a carer announced cheerfully that there would be exercise & music. “We don’t want any of that”, she replied firmly & proceeded to drown out the CD with her own song. Others joined in. When I arrived she smiled sweetly—butter wouldn’t melt
Brahms is trending on Twitter 🥰
So here is the programme of the last concert he attended. It was in Vienna in March 1897 and included performances of his 4th Symphony and Dvorák’s Cello Concerto…

He should look at the YouGov poll. The British people have already lost confidence in the PM. MPs are supposed to reflect the views of their constituents ...
On this day in 1950 the lovely
Victoria de los Angeles gave her first recital
@wigmore_hall
. I was lucky to be in the audience for her final one there 40 years later… Unforgettable…
The King’s presence at the ROH Gala last night was important: beyond clear affection & respect for Maestro Pappano & his immense contribution, it was symbolic of HM’s strong support for Music & Opera in the UK at a time when they are under threat
👏👏👏
THIS is the way to dress for a celebration of 170 years of Steinway
@wigmore_hall
. Congratulations to
@barronfleur
and
@juliusdrake
! And so lovely to hear Montsalvatge “Cubo dentro un piano”: I first heard it here with Victoria de los Ángeles many years ago…
Last picture from my Italian paradise for a while. Flying back to London this evening. Will miss the sun, the views, the neighbours, the sheep, the food… and my lovely Bechstein. Time for one last Bach Sarabande and then off… 😔
My mother has left hospital today after 6 weeks and is going to have respite care while she gets stronger. I’ve already made myself at home in the lounge, playing the piano. Hope it’s a good omen that the music book was opened at this:
Braving the cold to get to Covent Garden: one of the final opportunities to watch Antonio Pappano conduct as music director of the Royal Opera House: in Strauss’s Elektra
Feast day of St Mary Magdalene, 22.7.23
This graphic depiction of a penitent Magdalene carved from white poplar looks as if it belongs to the 20thC, but it was in fact created by Donatello in c.1440. I still remember the shock when I first saw it in Florence. So powerful.
There’s something v special about musicians who have known each other since childhood performing together—Daniel Barenboim & Martha Argerich playing piano duets...And tonight at
@bbcproms
Iván Fischer & András Schiff. Their warm embrace at the end of the Bartók was v touching…
The first of my lovely roses is out. Beautifully fragrant. Prized purchase from the sell-off after

Standing ovation for
@beatricerana
after an extraordinary performance of the Hammerklavier Sonata

Bravissima! 👏👏👏
I recently met Iran's Ambassador to the UK to raise the plight of my constituent Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who has been unlawfully detained in Iran for over five years.
It's high time for the UK & Iranian governments to take urgent action to

and reunite her family.
40 years ago I had the most powerful experience of my listening life—the choir of

International Women’s Day
A sad reflection from Berthe Morisot (1841–95), Impressionist painter, writing in her diary in 1890:
‘I don’t think there has ever been a man who treated a woman as an equal, and that’s all I would have asked for—I know I am worth as much as they are.’
Turns out that Maurice Ravel adored Siamese cats; Colette described them as his confidants. He allowed them onto his worktable, played with them all the time, spoke to them in 'cat language'.

Such a thrill to be handed a copy of the facsimile of the Art of Fugue in Bach’s own handwriting by Sir András Schiff to pass round the audience
@wigmore_hall
. And such beautiful handwriting—like undulating waves.
A bit like receiving a holy text from the hands of a sage…
I am buzzing after hearing the gorgeous voice of Nina Stemme
@nstemme
with Magnus Svensson
@wigmore_hall
. Loved it all but the highlight for me was Weill, sung as I’ve always dreamt he could be but never heard till now. Heartbreaking Surabaya Johnny, magical Youkali…
“It came upon the midnight clear
That glorious song of old
From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold…”
Wishing everyone a Very Merry Christmas and praying for peace…
SUCH a buzz
@wigmore_hall
after the brilliant concert with
@VOCES8
! If you didn’t watch the stream live, then do watch later: really joyous & life-enhancing.
An evening of mysterious delights awaits! Sir András Schiff will play piano and fortepiano with a programme announced from the stage
@wigmore_hall
. But… I’d be amazed if he didn’t begin with some Bach… 😊
My mother is definitely feeling a bit better today. She’s being moved from the Emergency ward to a geriatric ward and is very indignant about it.
“I didn’t know I was THAT old…”
Wonderful life-enhancing recital

Heartfelt tribute to Barry Humphries from
@StevenIsserlis
.
👏👏to Connie Shih for playing so many notes—esp in the Chopin!😉
And does the Marquis have a special affinity with Schumann like his human? It felt so, esp. in the 3rd mvt
This fortepiano fits so perfectly on the stage
@wigmore_hall
. Such a handsome instrument! Not surprising that a steady procession of admirers have been photographing it during the interval!
Today I made a discovery that could be very bad for my waistline: there is a branch of Ottolenghi a few minutes from

I couldn’t resist taking home a portion of strawberry & guava cheesecake!
At 9 pm local time (8 UK) at the Basilica of the Cross in Warsaw, there will be a performance of Mozart's Requiem, just as there was in Paris at Chopin's funeral.
If anyone would like to listen, it will be broadcast live on the YouTube channel of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute.
Chopin d otd 1849, his last days enhancing his romantic mystique. Fashionable ladies visited his death-chamber in order to swoon, and to be seen swooning; as he died, he begged for his heart to be buried in Poland - as it was. A unique end for a uniquely beloved composer...
So sad to hear that an Italian university in Milan has cancelled Paolo Nori’s course on Dostoevsky ‘to avoid polemics at this time of high tension’.
