Another birthday gift for you…
@IainDale
Kings & Queens is out today. I am so proud to have contributed to this wonderful book. Pick up a copy today!
Kings and Queens: 1200 Years of English and British Monarchs
This is sensible advice. Please do not eat a whole Easter egg in one go. You will dislocate your jaw, which can be painful.
Easter eggs should be broken into manageable ‘bite-sized’ pieces and consumed within one sitting whilst watching an old movie.
Stay safe.
The government has just hung every venue owner out to dry. If YOU choose to close your business, we won't compensate you and we've just advised your customers to stay away. I'm with
@Baddiel
"Either ban shit or don't."
This is mad. Either ban shit or don’t. Don’t “recommend.” “We don’t think gatherings cause infection so we’re not banning them but don’t go to the pub, club or theatre.” Pardon?
"You would never say that to a man."
There are days when I wake up thinking 'there's no way I could love Hannah Waddingham more today', and then she pulls this out of the bag.
(Context in case you haven't seen this story - photographer shouted for her to show a bit of leg.)
long story short: hannah was being her gorgeous self and the 📸 made some comment about her leg we couldn't quite make out and... well, the video speaks for itself. This woman is a role model. Always, always call pricks out on their bullshit.
This time last week, I was helping my Mum get ready for her wedding.
I made my first wedding cake in ages (I only make them for people I really love these days!), but I’m proud to share her Yorkist design.
White sugar roses, sugar lace, and sunnes in splendour.

The library still smells of paint, but there’s nothing like the promise of how it will smell in years to come: of books, old musty books.
Sharing for those friends of mine who will need a solid 5 minute sit down after looking at this. You know you you are, book perves.
#OBS
I guess now is as good as time as any to come out with some good news…
I will be contributing to this forthcoming tome thanks to the wonderful
@IainDale
who has asked me to write about Charles II. You can expect a fresh take on the Merry Monarch from me. Preorder!
Following on from THE PRIME MINISTERS and THE PRESIDENTS, KINGS & QUEENS will follow in the autumn of 2023. I've now recruited all the contributors. It's going to be quite a tome!
You can preorder it here.
Because I know that you lot are looking for distractions on a Friday afternoon, will you look at this picture
@Photo_Laura
took of me?! I've never seen a photo that more perfectly captured my nerdy essence in perpetuity.
Taken in my beloved
@eaglebookshop
Ah, the unphotographable cake… this World War I trench battle scene was designed by
@chriswhite65
for

conference. What a brilliant weekend it was!
I’ll share more photos of the cake (and it’s making) over on Twitter and Facebook later today, so make sure you…
Popped into the refurbished
@NPGLondon
yesterday to see Barbara Villiers, still giving us the same old sass.
This was the portrait that made me love her. This was the portrait that made me give 7+ years of my life telling her story. I’ll not rest until you love her too. The cow.
I know you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, but sometimes you see a cover and KNOW you have to own the book. 1950s pulp history.
Spot the glaring historical inaccuracy on the front cover...
Well, it’s not quite how I wanted to announce it to
@BasisSexWork
or to you, but corona had other ideas. If you preordered
#CuriousHistoryOfSex
, this is where your money has gone. Thank you. Xx
I’m sure I’ll get some lovely presents for Christmas but this is going to take some beating! Thanks to
@churchill_alex
@hack_history
for the greatest custom tote bag ever created. You know me so well.
Happy nerd. 🤓
Visited the Pepys Library at Magdalene College, Cambridge yesterday. It houses Pepys’ collection of some 3,000 books all ordered exactly as he had them in his own library. If Sam walked in there today, he would be able to find any book he was looking for!
12yrs and I’d marry
@chriswhite65
again. Last year we threw the party to end all parties. This year, we’ll spend the day painting bookshelves. He really is my perfect guy. ❤️
Though I should leave this alone, I can’t resist because it IS in my area of expertise.
The timing of the discovery of bones in the tower, and their subsequent burial FOUR YEARS LATER was very convenient for Charles II. Dead Princes? More like a dead cat.
#PrincesintheTower
Today I visited dead kings at Westminster Abbey with my birthday twin
@churchill_alex
This was me paying my respects to Prince Rupert of the Rhine (my historical boyfriend). I always touch stones, walls, floors…
New haircut, who dis? My neck is cold and I’m off to town for the NME Awards. I’d love to tell you I was nominated or even invited, but we bought tickets to gaze upon Robert Smith!
Oh my god. This is game changing research. Congratulations
@MattLewisAuthor
, this is a brilliant episode.
Richard III didn’t kill his nephews. They didn’t die in the Tower.
Well, I guess that cat is out of the bag! I was honoured to be asked to make
@lisafaulknercooks
bespoke wedding cake. I’ve worked with Lisa many times over the years and she was a dream bride to work with. I wish her and John all the happiness in the wor…
We brought home two rescue kittens. A week and a half in, they’re starting to Insta pose.
Meet Betty Howard Dryden White. She has excellent taste in books and likes chasing feathers.
@GoingMedieval
Personally, as soon as it was revealed that he was a police officer, I decided that at no point in my life will I ever go anywhere with an unaccompanied male police officer.
Sorry, still a strange man. I was taught not to go anywhere with them. Deeply worrying and upsetting af.
I want to say this loudly and clearly so those at the back can hear - on behalf of all the 90s girls and teens who STILL think they need to lose weight every. single. time they look in the mirror, FUCK YOU.
Fuck you so very much.
My darling friend got her wedding photos sent through and nestled within was this snap of me looking all old Hollywood. Now I will only agree to be photographed in black and white!
So this is 40. I’m fine with that. Chris gave me a crown and a sash and a baby bottle of champagne for breakfast. I’m assuming this is just every day for the next ten years stuff…
Born on an industrial estate, recused by
@catsprotection
at 8wks, these sisters won the cat lottery at 6mnths.
Meet Barbara Villiers Palmer Castlemaine Cleveland Nonsuch White. She’s a duchess and she knows it.
I’ve had the most wonderful chat with
@benpaites
curator at Colchester Castle, about ‘Wicked Spirits’ and all things witchy. Would
@churchill_alex
and I have eluded the witchfinders?
@hack_history
episode coming soon!
When I said that I wasn’t interested in any more Henry VIII content until someone could bring a genuinely new angle to it, this is exactly what I was hoping for...
An array of dignitaries feast upon a lavish spread and make merry at Henry VIII's extravagant coronation banquet, 1509, (recreated here by talented thespian Guinea pigs).
Like many Christmas cooks across the world, I found myself lacking in time to take photos or record much of yesterday! I fed 6(000) whilst wearing a glorified velvet dressing gown and sparkly heels.
Spending an afternoon with
@rsociety_iii
in Nantwich to hear Philippa Langley and
@MattLewisAuthor
discuss the survival of the Princes in the Tower and the new evidence that supports this.
#LML
I am so proud of this. I’ve been given my own mini-series on
@hack_history
to explore women who have perhaps been a little misunderstood in the history books. Chatting to
@EilishGregory
was the perfect place to start.
Thank you to
@churchill_alex
for her faith in me! ❤️
In this first episode of our new mini-series, Charly
@restorationcake
teams up with Dr
@EilishGregory
to discuss Catherine of Braganza, Charles II's much misunderstood queen 🎧
How many of my fellow Brits are two drinks in already?
How many of my American friends are two drinks in already? Believe me, I will not judge you for it! 🥂
Holy shit! I’ve just binged
@HISTORYUK
Royal Kill List.
Willing to overlook a whole bunch of inaccuracy for the ‘make the 17thC sexy again’ movement but (and forgive me for shouting) CHARLES II WAS NOT A WIFE BEATING PSYCHOPATH.
Fuck’s sake.
@hack_history
@HistoryRage
Today was a special day. I delivered my last wedding cake. It’s been an amazing ride and believe me, this is not the end… but Restoration Cake is evolving.
Pic shows me 10yrs ago, selling cupcakes the day after I was made redundant!
Saturday’s wedding cake was a little different and completely personal. Alice and Tim LOVE gaming together so I created a pair of XBox controllers in icing! 100% life-sized and 100% edible.
Tomorrow is my birthday and I shall be waking up in this bed in this room in which Charles II allegedly slept in the 1670s. It’s all very red and I like it very much!
The second photo of
@greatwargroup
conference I want to share is this. After seminars, cake, conversations, quizzes, and karaoke, we honoured those who gave their lives. Remembrance led by
@historyandmoore
and
@churchill_alex
Teamwork makes the dream work. OK, I’ve spammed you with pics of the
@greatwargroup
cake but I had to share this rare one of
@chriswhite65
posing with his creation. He designed it, I baked it.
Yesterday I delivered the coolest wedding cake to the coolest wedding! Totally vegan, aubergine into black, with orange sugar roses. That piped detail was copied from the invitations.

This is a real treat for all my 17thC nerds...
@churchill_alex
and I spoke to the brilliant
@SocialHistoryOx
about his new book The Blazing World: A New History of Revolutionary England for
@hack_history
8 questions and under an hour? Never enough.
This weekend Chris and I will be celebrating our 11th wedding anniversary with our nearest and dearest. I’m excitedly making completely unnecessary lists and trying to focus on my actual work! There will be cake.
A few more pics of this weekend’s cake for
@GreatWarGroup
conference. The trench through the cake was fully boarded out and the camo netting was made of sugar too!

How cool is this? Earith is a floodgate for nearby St Ives (the other one) and flooded pretty much every other year of my youth. Many a brave school bus driver got us through these waters but I never saw a fort from the window!
Taking a moment to feel proud before the anxiety kicks in! The latest draft of my novel is going out to a few trusted readers. This means I get to hold it, and holding it feels good.
I’ve really had the best day chasing Prince Rupert around Newark. Thanks to Chris for indulging me and for taking this pic of me raising a (large) glass to the man in the pub that bears his name.
And here are a few pics of the
@GreatWarGroup
cake in progress. As someone who works predominantly in pretty wedding cakes, I had to calm myself regularly from freaking out at this ugly pile of chocolate cake and messy, dented, textured icing!
Ten years ago today I married this absolute legend
@chriswhite65
It remains the best decision I ever made.
(Yes, I made my own wedding cake. No, I do not recommend it!)
Not all heroes wear capes… but we all know the best super ones do!
Channeling my best (idk Balmoral Woman?) cape chic look for lunch with a gorgeous friend today.
I was briefly obsessed with The Four Musketeers, growing up. I think I wanted to be Milady de Winter and own a glass dagger filled with green poison.
You know. Like any normal child would.
When we brought our rescue kittens home in February, we were warned that they may never want to be near us, having spent the first 8 weeks of their lives with no human contact.
This is our fearsome formerly feral Betty today.

He didn’t like a lot of people, but he seemed to like me. He liked falling asleep next to Chris when he took himself to bed. They were napping buddies. I always said that I loved them both, but he should never ask me to choose between them.
Just linked
@churchill_alex
website on my own and something struck me about her photo... I wondered where I got the 'resting book face' idea from! Alex makes it look cooler.
Plus, I'm hanging out in the science books to catfish
@ChemistryKit
I had the best day exploring

.chatham with

and our new album drops… no we haven’t started a boaty band.
Well, we haven’t yet…

I had the most wonderful afternoon at the Siege of Huntingdon with

@museumcromwell
A highlight was chatting to this gent from
@Sealed_Knot
who was a fellow Royalist in disguise!
When I was 9, my teacher told me that Charles I wore an extra vest on the day of his execution (30/01/1649) so he wouldn’t shiver and appear afraid. As an empath, I was bound to him from that moment on.
I can believe that the engineer named David Bowie dropped at least 3 Bowie album titles into his chat with

I counted Labyrinth, Blackstar, and Reality!

My (almost) birthday twin and the first friend I think of when I want to go and touch the steps royal feet have trod.
You are amazing, Alex, and you are so loved. ❤️🎂🥂🎈
So many tears. So much emotion. It’s come home. It took the

to bring it home.
Never tell a girl what she can and cannot dream of achieving.
Crying again. ❤️
Winter dress and snow boots for yesterday’s
@richardiiisociety
(
@rsociety_iii
on twitter) Xmas lunch and carol service in Fotheringhay. A joy to be surrounded by Ricardians any time of the year!
Liz and Nick’s rouge noir, jet beaded wedding cake. I threw everything at this - gold leaf, Tim Burton inspired black and white striped ribbon, paper flowers (matching the buttonholes), and those dinosaurs! Loved it.
Nope. NO! I cannot deal with this album being 30yrs old.
In fact, I cannot accept that 1994 was 30yrs ago. Can we all just agree that it was 10yrs ago and leave it at that?
(And it’s Babies. That guitar riff and sound is euphoric. Throws me right back.)
Woke up this morning missing Chris, so I did something impulsive. Bought a ticket to see The Cure on their last night at Wembley, threw on a black dress, and drove down to join him!
Unpacking my suitcases and my thoughts now that I am home from Scotland. A nerdy highlight of my trip was seeing this original copy of the National Covenant. So many people died for this piece of unphotographable paper.
The dress code for my friends’ wedding yesterday was, if you think it’s too much for a wedding, wear it! Sparkled all day in this starry
@collectifclothing
number and
@nobasicbombshell
earrings.
How wonderful it is to be alive today. A historic 70yr reign is not something I’ll see again! God save the Queen. Cake for everyone!
(I made this for Charles II who died OTD 1685 aged 55, after a short illness and physicians).
Chris bought me a Victorian walnut writing slope for my birthday this year. He snapped this pic today as I was writing letters. Out of drag and totally chilled. You?
Happy birthday to the dude, noted perv and cheese fan, window into the world in which I choose to spend my time, Samuel Pepys. Thank you for being born and for writing. A small glass shall be raised to you tonight. 🍷
This
#worldbookday
a little self-celebration. Ten years ago I signed my first book deal. Funny how we fix expiry dates on our achievements. I’ve never stopped writing. My content has changed, and it hasn’t…
Still buzzing from an incredible day spent at Windsor Castle. To see even a few rooms preserved to appear as they would have in Charles II’s reign was beyond thrilling. Here is a happy nerd with the man himself.
