We could populate a gallery exhibition just with the stunning cover iterations @pablodelcan and @devinjacoviello created for The Origins of Efficiency and The Scaling Era. Maybe we will…
Cover evolution for The Origins of Efficiency: “We explored a wide range of options inspired by examples that @_brianpotter highlights in the book: light bulbs, nails, printing presses, and more,” says @pablodelcan. “Each built on the theme of transformation, showing how

The Origins of Efficiency is an outstanding read. @_brianpotter shares both a 10,000-foot model of how production efficiency happens and riveting examples of that model in practice. I never expected to become intellectually invested in the Model T assembly line, but here we are.
Out now: https://t.co/KEyYy67F90 200 years on from the Industrial Revolution, we still struggle to understand what makes a production process more efficient. The Origins of Efficiency fills in that gap. Examining industries from steel to semiconductors to auto manufacturing,

Evolution of the Scaling Era cover: “It’s hard to find unique ways of visualizing AI without defaulting to the obvious,” says @pablodelcan. “In our design process, we experimented with unexpected metaphors—flowers growing out of neural networks, abstract mathematical puzzles

One of the reasons I like this book is because it is unapologetically written for the aspirational reader. It is dense with footnotes. If you want to understand AI, but don't have a deep background in it, this book will give you as much back as you put in. Highly recommend.
What is intelligence? What will it take to create AGI? What happens once we succeed? The Scaling Era: An Oral History of AI, 2019–2025 by @dwarkesh_sp and @g_leech_ explores the questions animating those at the frontier of AI research. It’s out today: https://t.co/6GzEZyaggR

I learned so, so much from The Scaling Era. @dwarkesh_sp and @g_leech_ are the first to bring together multiple perspectives — from the most important people in the field — rather than advancing a single take. It will make your understanding of AI exponentially richer.

🧵 on how efficiency improvements in food and textile production lifted millions out of famine and made it much cheaper and easier to produce just about everything, from @_brianpotter’s The Origins of Efficiency.

An examination of how production processes—from penicillin to steel to semiconductors—get more efficient over time, and a powerful argument for efficiency as an underrated driver of progress.
How was penicillin able to eliminate 80% of WWII battlefield deaths? Why did nails once make up 0.4% of US GDP? In The Origins of Efficiency, @_brianpotter unpacks how production efficiency happens, and why it is of civilizational importance. Preorder: https://t.co/KEyYy67F90

I talked to @_TamaraWinter about tacit knowledge and the illegible social scaffolding that supports so much of society. Tammy is essentially a professional tastemaker: she and the @stripepress team choose which ideas are worthy of Stripe's global audience in the form of a few
Ep. 23: Tamara Winter - Tacit Trust & Caring Curiosity Tamara Winter (@_TamaraWinter) is the Commissioning Editor of @stripepress, where she exercises her taste to identify the knowledge and "ideas for progress" that matter most in alignment with Stripe's mission: to increase

Devices that can read the activity of neurons and send them to a computer sound like the stuff of sci-fi. But @rebeccahiscott explains that brain-computer interfaces may be as little as five years away. https://t.co/7kVs9xS8VB

Brain implants are letting people move, speak, and interact with machines using only their thoughts. The first FDA approvals may arrive within five years.

We made a new batch of zines for the @stripepress coffee shop at @stripe Sessions next week, and let me tell ya, they are stunning. Including zines for @dwarkesh_sp and @_brianpotter’s forthcoming books, plus one for @chughesjohnson’s Scaling People, because it was long overdue!

Had the most inspiring conversation with @jackrusher about generative art, the inherent humanity of creativity (and how AI might change that), and how excellence is a function of habit. Grateful for the words and wisdom. https://t.co/UDSKW5L08b

Multi-disciplinary artist Jack Rusher discusses habit as excellence, what scientists and artists have in common, and the influence of AI on creativity.

@dwarkesh_sp With @g_leech_’s curation, the book isn’t just a collection of warm takes on AI; it’s a narrative of the last 6 years in exponential AI growth. We at @stripepress truly believe it will stand the test of time. Hope our eventual AGI overlords agree. 🤖 https://t.co/7codopWa03

One of the (many) things that is so remarkable about @dwarkesh_sp’s interviews with AI leaders is his ability to elicit the types of conversations that usually only happen behind closed doors. The PR-softened messages fall away, and the real questions and concerns come out.
https://t.co/6GzEZyaggR The past 6 years of AI growth can be summed up in a word: scaling. Since 2022, @dwarkesh_sp has interviewed experts on everything from the technical details of LLMs to the possibility of an AI takeover or explosive economic growth. The Scaling Era
