In fact, the more talented the team, the more important it is for leaders to care about these things! This explains why whatever Jony touches turns to gold. He’s obviously talented, sure, but that talent would surely be dead in the dirt without his love and appreciation.

My personal takeaway is the importance of leadership. The power imbalance within a corporate structure puts a proportionate amount of responsibility on those with the most power to be the biggest seekers and keepers of things like joy, connection, and thoughtfulness.

The biggest takeaway for me is how much Jony seems enraptured with the depth of human chemistry. Talking with some close friends who also watched the talk, the prevailing feeling was one of vindication! Which to me is signal that these forces are delicate and don’t just happen.

Step 2 — Ask yourself what actions you can take to build and fortify these ideas on your team. Are you contributing more opinions than ideas? Is your team comprised of people with deep, meaningful relationships? if not, why? Who on your team brings joy to others?.

Step 1 — Look in the mirror and rigorously assess whether or not you not only understand these ideas but more importantly have internalized them. These concepts aren’t just good reminders. You need them to be thriving inside your heart.
