Some personal news:
It was announced this morning that subject to the necessary processes I have been appointed Vicar of All Saints’, Benhilton in the Diocese of Southwark and the See of Fulham.
I’m really, really fed up of the media going on about foreign holidays as though it would be a disaster if they didn’t happen. Some people can barely afford a break at home!
“Watershed moment” is putting it politely. I wonder what my (majority African) parishioners would say about an apology for bringing their forebears the truth of the Gospel.
Forgiveness doesn’t necessarily involve reconciliation. Hadn’t really stopped to think about that before. We are commanded to do the former, but the latter may not be possible or advisable.

Hey
@Uber
my wife was just refused travel because she was in a wheelchair and the driver didn’t want to put it in the boot (it folds down). This is discrimination. I’d like to hear from you about this.
I for one will be refusing to sing “In the Bleak Midwinter” this year in order to draw attention to the climate emergency and to reflect the fact that winter is no longer as frosty. And I expect you all to do the same.
Given that those who cannot receive the sacramental ministry of women *cannot* do so - it’s not a choice - what WATCH are saying is they want people like me to leave the CofE.
Accepting the settlements that enabled the ordination of women to the priesthood and episcopate was an “error of judgment”, the Bishop of Dover, the Rt Revd Rose Hudson-Wilkin, said on Saturday
Tales of an inner-city priest…
My iPad was stolen last night by someone who had come to the sacristy asking to see me. I was upstairs vesting for Mass and was startled by the man waiting at the bottom of the stairs.
People claiming to be pro-Palestinian have taken to harassing people including families leaving McDonald’s.
They giggle from the buzz they get. The joy of antisemitism has reached the high street.
This is not advocacy. It is a violent, hateful ideology
So an actual Area Dean in this diocese is saying that folk like me should no longer be eligible for ordination. But don’t worry! I’ll be permitted to die in the church of my birth, so long as I’m happy knowing that I’m the last of my sort.
🚨 NEW: Right-wing Tory MPs believe Penny Mordaunt should lead the Tories into the next election as they consider a plot to oust Rishi Sunak
They are waiting for a cabinet minister to call for Sunak to go before they attack

You know what I'd really like from National Church? A total re-write of the liturgical sections of the website, directed by parish priests with suitable skills for the task. The current site is not fit for purpose.
The unity of faith requires that doctrine handed on must be consistent with what has gone before. We do not know better than the apostles, the fathers, or generations of faithful men and women.
@MadsDavies
Not just working-class clergy, the push for younger vocations means people enter the clergy with very little capital. People under 25, regardless of class background, certainly don't own their own house (maybe not even a car), and often have little savings and high student debt.
Whatever your view on the issues being debated at the moment,
@liambeadle
is absolutely right. ‘Doctrine’ is almost a dirty word because ‘feelings’ trump everything.
Vividly remember being summoned to a clergy conference where Paula was the much-fêted keynote speaker. This piece from Fergus is a very unhappy reminder of much that is wrong with the CofE.
For those just discovering the profound evil of the Post Office scandal courtesy of last night’s excellent ITV drama, I wrote a piece for

’s newsletter last year on its links to managerialism and the Church of England.
The moral life is not a private life. Our personal relationship with Jesus isn’t a private one. We don’t get to pick and choose which bits of the church’s teaching we agree with and dispense with the rest.
Please pray for the repose of the soul of our dear sister Catherine, faithful servant of the Lord, proud daughter of Yorkshire, and until recently PCC Treasurer

Do the producers of Thought for the Day and Pause for Thought ever think about inviting some theologically conservative contributors on? What happened to diversity and inclusion?
The Archbishop of Airmiles: Justin Welby is accused of hypocrisy after racking up 48,000 miles on foreign trips to Africa, Gaza and Pakistan since September despite lecturing people about climate change and advocating for Net Zero
"We wish to make it clear that departure from the Church's teaching, or silence about it, in an effort to provide pastoral care is neither caring nor pastoral. Only what is true can ultimately be pastoral." (Benedict XVI)
Matthew Parris says the quiet part out loud about euthanasia: “we simply cannot afford extreme senescence or desperate infirmity for as many such individuals as our society is producing.”
In countries like Nigeria, Christians are being slaughtered in their thousands and we say nothing. But we’re supposed to apologise for bringing the faith for which they’re currently laying down their lives?
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
No. This woman lied in order to procure an abortion of a child who could easily have survived outside the womb. This was a premeditated killing of a helpless child.
The average prison sentence for a violent offence in England is 18 months. A woman who had an abortion without following correct procedures just got 28 months under an 1868 act- we need urgent reform to make safe access for all women in England, Scotland and wales a human right.
Someone receiving Personal Independence Payment is not necessarily out of work. Getting really really fed up of the lazy discourse on this today!

I do hope I am wrong, but this is deeply troubling. Where are these big houses that the lay-led churches will meet in? What about the sacraments? What about proper formation for leaders? What about safeguarding?
A look at the CofE vision for 10,000 new predominantly lay-led churches in the next ten years. Another aim is to double number of children & young ppl by 2030
Spent last night at the incredible St John the Baptist, Holland Road. Jaw-dropping beauty! Thanks to

for an excellent evening.
As Fr Robin says, clearly a lot of this is LLF-related as ordinands wait to see if they will be able to minister with integrity. But I wonder how much is also the impact of the cost of living and the loss of Tax Credits making the stipend less and less able to support a family?
I would love some of the funding set aside for sexy new worshipping communities. If we could afford to install our new facilities and fix the building, imagine how much time and energy would be released!
Safeguarding training, MDR, Temple Committee meetings, Convocation, reading reports from High Priestesses’ Advisory Panels, dealing with complaints under the Priestess Disciplinary Measure…
Saddened to hear of a brother priest receiving DMs urging him to leave the CofE. If people feel that way they should at least have the courage to say so publicly.
This is very sad news. Bishop Colin assisted at my diaconal ordination, which was rather lovely given how much time I had spent studying his liturgical work for my BA dissertation. He represents an evangelical tradition which seems to have entirely died out within the CofE.
@sefkhet
Nonsense. We will be singing it as usual, and I’m sure the vast majority will do the same. Carols aren’t a comment on the current state of affairs in the world.
Good to see the Society is ready to defend the doctrine of marriage. This should be backed with clear pastoral guidelines for all clergy who look to it.
“Christianity is not destroyed by rival ideologies…It is just slowly gnawed at by secularism, consumerism, the “strange disease of modern life”.“
This article by A N Wilson is spot on.
I hope this short theological summary of the doctrine of marriage as the Church of England has received it, and how it relates to changes in society around same-sex partnerships, can be a resource to the CofE in its ongoing discussions:
“Thriving churches… ‘are very intentional about what they do. They are very clear in their beliefs’ – particularly about the urgency of accepting Christ, since one’s eternal destiny is at stake.”
“Saint George was a man who abandoned one army for another: he gave up the rank of tribune to enlist as a soldier for Christ. Eager to encounter the enemy, he first stripped away his worldly wealth by giving all he had to the poor…
Glad this article calls this for what it is: assisted suicide. I have argued against this in all my episcopal roles and will continue to do so. Investment in palliative care is essential. It will so often be the vulnerable who would suffer most in this.
“The rise in prosecutions for late term abortions has been caused by the removal of safeguards for early medical abortions…Decriminalising abortion to term would put women in danger & be a serious failure to protect the unborn child.” 1/2

How can bodies like WATCH claim to stand for inclusion when their stated aims would result in large numbers of faithful clergy and laity being de-churched?
Sometimes people accuse
@WATCH_ACT
of bringing disunity but we want to see an end to the divided episcopate that the arrangements for women's ministry have brought - so that we can be one
@churchofengland
again with all in communion with each other
