Physical media “is a ‘you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone’ proposition. If you care about movies, and movie history, and you want to be able to see the things that you love over time, it’s the best way to ensure that.”
I’ve had some time to reflect at I think the BT sport coverage of the Champions League final was, on balance, the worst TV sports broadcast I’ve ever seen. Commentary, pundits, editing, tenor of coverage, the game itself, a Jake Humphrey victory lap - historically shit
The time to speak is now. A communist takeover is slyly being implemented, they’re very clever but they don’t fool everyone. Good will triumph over evil 💪
For everyone using the ‘don’t judge by modern standards’ line - Enid Blyton had a manuscript rejected by Macmillan in 1960 on the grounds of xenophobic content. An editorial decrying her racist book ‘The Little Black Doll’ was published by the Guardian in 1966. Don’t do this.
The Royal Mint has refused to put Enid Blyton's face on a commemorative coin after being known to be a ‘racist’, ‘sexist’ and ‘homophobe’, according to the Royal Mint Advisory Committee.
Are they right or should this best-selling writer still be celebrated?

Sorry if it puts a dent in your childhood memories (I loved her books too) but there are reams of publicly available material out there that, put together, make a pretty watertight case that Enid Blyton was a nasty piece of work.

GEORGE: well - I got pre-empted!

For me it was the anecdote about Noel Gallagher and the rain in Manchester tasting like champagne tonight. Legitimately boiled my piss
I'm still actively looking to commission writers for Radiance with expertise in the following (era generally the 60s/70s/80s)
- Italian cinema
- Japanese cinema
- French cinema
- Spanish cinema
- Film noir
- Crime movies/polars/polizio
if this is you DM me with details!
If you’d told 10 year old me that one day I’d be publishing Cormac McCarthy, I’d have asked you, ‘Who is Cormac McCarthy?’ If you’d told 21 year old me, however, I’d have lost my shit. Like I am now.
Look at how good these look! In bookstores *next week*!
#PicadorCollection
I’m saying goodbye to Picador this week, and publishing, at least for a bit. Somehow a four week temp contract turned into a ten year career, which introduced me to people and experiences I never thought possible + I feel so lucky and grateful for those opportunities.
My favourite piece of Martin Amis’s writing, or at least the one I immediately thought of upon learning of his passing, was his account of being forced to watch ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ with Salman Rushdie during the peak of the fatwa
@LWhannell
@GuyLodge
Hi, I'm generally a fan of your stuff but you are the one instigating a pile-on from your followers onto another artist, asking them to 'review his work' with a nudge-wink. His benign opinion on the film didn't tag you or mention you by name. Only one person is lacking class here
Didn’t think it was possible to love STOP MAKING SENSE any more after dozens of watches but seeing it in IMAX 4K with the genuinely remarkable new Atmos mix was hands down one of the best cinema experiences of my life. Best concert film, best album, best film. Same as it ever was
Side note - I got to read Enid Blyton’s (several pages long) handwritten response to being asked to testify in the Penguin/Lady Chatterly trial a few years ago. It is genuinely one of the most unhinged things I’ve ever read.
@AdamCrafton_
I actually agree with how Liverpool are framing this. There’s been 3 PGMOL incidents in 2 months deemed serious enough for an apology, suspensions etc. It’s not sustainable. Escalation and resolution means heads rolling or rules being changed, and I think we’ve reached that point
I am very delighted to share the news that I am joining

Flight attendant: Is there a doctor on this flight?
Dad: *nudging me* that should've been you
Me: Not now Dad
Dad: Not asking for a publishing professional to help, are they?
Me: Dad, there's a medical emergency happening right now
Dad: Go and see if they want any prosecco
I have seen both BARBIE and OPPENHEIMER. All fun and games aside, do NOT watch them on the same day. Allow at least 24 hours between them to decompress and evaluate. You will thank me later….jfc
Massive news for Martinovic—
@picadorbooks
has promoted
@paulmartinovic
to associate editor for backlist and popular non-fiction, where he will develop his own pop culture:
I will mainly remember Silvio Berlusconi for ensuring TENEBRAE was censored in Italy for decades because his wife’s character is murdered in it. He probably did worse stuff. Look I’m no politics buff
Look at these lovely, perfect-for-the-beach paperback editions of Olivia Laing’s CRUDO - in bookshops May 2nd. However, if you want a copy before your friends have them I’m giving away 5 copies on here - RT and I’ll pick the winners at random. 🦀🔨
@imteddybless
I used to do this all the time. For an added frissson it’s also nice to spend a few minutes taking in the new view and imagine you’re staying in an exotic hotel
The MCUification of Roald Dahl is hilarious to me, just an absolutely doomed and cursed project destined to be despised on both sides of the cultural divide that nevertheless must plow ahead because the forces of capitalism demand it.
It's 2024. Why are newly announced children's books adding disability to characters as proof they are 'disgusting'? As children's authors, it's our duty to write for *all* children, including children with eye prostheses or blind children.
Just filed an invoice for my first piece of freelance work in many years. Very exciting.
I have 15 years of experience in journalism and publishing, and am actively looking for editorial/copywriting freelance work. DM me if you have something suitable - RTs appreciated!
The cover for YOUNG MUNGO,
@Doug_D_Stuart
's follow-up to the Booker Prize winning SHUGGIE BAIN is being revealed over at
@picadorbooks
at 2.30pm today. I've seen a sneak preview and I'm going to say it - it'll go down in publishing lore as an iconic cover. Yes, really!
@dalelamb288
Yeah, fair point that the BBC were equally uncritical and accepting of the City Cinderella narrative. I just thought BT tipped over into outright fawning, which was then compounded by the whole presentation being relentlessly third rate and incompetent
@EmpsonJanet
I think it's totally right to acknowledge the influence of her work and even celebrate it (apart from the more obviously bigoted stuff), but then there's also enough evidence to suggest that she personally shouldn't be held up as one of our proudest exports
Film Twitter! Book Twitter! Chevy Chase Twitter! I have proof copies of the wonderful WILD AND CRAZY GUYS by

10 days and thousands of books later the Eddie Jones tour is over. A true gent and a pleasure to work with. Go buy his book for you or someone else for Christmas - it’s really good!
Watching MAESTRO. As a neutral bystander I have been feeling a lot of sympathy for the way Bradley Cooper has been vilified in this Oscar race but now I realise everyone was 100% right to dunk on him, please carry on
Praise for
@FitzcarraldoEds
absolutely deserved but can’t help but feel their ridiculous run also reflects lack of interest from bigger ‘literary’ publishers in supporting formally progressive literature from around the world. The business model just isn’t there.

I’m looking to commission writers old and new to write essays to accompany upcoming

I know many people who have written for
@RollingStoneUK
and every one of them has had to chase for months to get paid. They’re fobbed off with the same lines but it’s very clear that delaying payment or trying to avoid it entirely is a feature not a bug in their business strategy
Hate calling stuff out on here, it's so not me, but with my emails now being ignored, I dunno what else to do. I invoiced
@RollingStoneUK
in early Dec for an interview I did with
@rickygervais
&
@StephenMerchant
. It's now nearly April and still no payment
The

At a showing of ANVIL: THE STORY OF ANVIL at the Prince Charles the lights came up to reveal that the only people in attendance were me, Julia Davis and Julian Barratt. All of us had been crying. Also sat next to a visibly moved Ian Hislop at DUNKIRK
Happy 50th birthday to Picador, which launched in the UK as an imprint of Pan Books on 7th October 1972. A new paperback imprint for the ‘thinking, seeking young’, the eight launch titles included Rosshalde by Herman Hesse and Heroes & Villains by Angela Carter (🧵)
Just off the back of watching MAY/DECEMBER, KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, THE BOY AND THE HERON, ALL OF US STRANGERS and FERRARI in a 48 hour period. Think this might be pretty hard to top as the best weekend of watching new films that I’ve ever had?

Very excited to share something with you I've been working on for a while - the huge bumper special edition that is BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY (AND OTHER WRITING), featuring over 100 pages of new and rare material from Helen Fielding, out Feb 6th 2021.

I totally agree that the work is the work. The issue here is that she is personally being celebrated and deified, which I do have an issue with given her history. Give your kid your dog-eared copy of Noddy by all means, but don't build her a statue.
They say there are no long term side effects to the Pfizer jab but since I got my first one I have become interested in both Formula One and Neon Genesis Evangelion after a lifetime of antipathy. I guess what I’m saying is be careful out there
Hello, over the next few days this is where I will be tweeting my top 100 films of the decade (2010-2019). 50-1 will have commentary attached. And yes, all of these films are overrated (by me) and underrated (by everyone else). Without further ado:
I have a stack of exciting new books here that I probably should send to 'influencers' and 'authors' and 'people who have specifically requested them' but i'm going to give some away on here instead as I am a MAN of the PEOPLE
Just walked past a couple in their fifties sat in a parked convertible, staring at the sea drinking pints of bitter while wearing matching flat caps and just *blasting* ‘The Bitter End’ by Placebo over the soundsystem. So guess I’ll be thinking about that for the next few weeks
