Project Tiger started in 1973 with just 9 tiger reserves covering 18,278 sq km in 9 states. Today there are 50 tiger reserves spread over an area of 72,749 sq km in 18 tiger range states.
NTCA deeply mourns the loss of Shri Anil Soni, a dynamic forest officer & Field Director, Achanakmar Tiger Reserve, due to COVID19. As FD, he was responsible for streamlining the tiger reserve management.

Shri P.K. Sen, former Director, Project Tiger passes away due to COVID-19. Recognizing his contribution towards wildlife conservation, he was awarded Padma Shri in 2010 by The Government of India. NTCA mourns the loss of an accomplished conservationist.
All India Tiger Estimation results reveal that India’s tiger population has a healthy annual growth rate of 6 per cent, offsetting natural losses and keeping their numbers at the habitats-carrying capacity level.

A tigress captured from Corbett Tiger Reserve has been successfully released in Motichur range of Rajaji Tiger Reserve. This is first ever tiger reintroduction in Uttarakhand to augment tiger population.

in securing the core area of Manas over the last couple of years has borne fruit, we now have evidence of the increasing tigers at Manas dispersing to Buxa Tiger Reserve, validating Manas as a credible source population
The Nagarhole Tiger Reserve conducted bird survey (from 23 to 26 Jan) by involving volunteers.
111 participants traversed 1300 km, surveyed 91 beats covering more than 830 sq km and recorded 270 bird species which included several rare and endangered ones.
