I will have a bit more to say about why this is such an incredible dream come true for me when things settle down a bit, but I am beyond thrilled to say that I'm going to be a gen surg resident at
@SurgeryInova
!!!!!
#GenSurgMatch2022
I matched y'all 😭😭 I'm really gonna be a surgeon!! It is so hard to try and focus on anything else today...I just keep scrolling and liking all the other match posts!

Hi
#GenSurgMatch2022
! I’m Nadia, MS4
@UQMedicine
@OchsnerHealth
and aspiring surgeon, with a background in biomedical engineering + global health. Talk to me about health equity, the book you’re reading, favorite travel destination or anything Egyptian! Can’t wait to meet y’all☺️
@fyreman2006
Personally I don't think hospitals should have any overhead announcements that are not absolutely necessary. For anyone who enjoys these things, it's likely there are many more they are either upsetting or disturbing/distracting who are already inundated with noise.
beyond horrified to hear about the attack/ongoing situation at the synagogue in texas. praying for the safety of the remaining hostages and for the members of the jewish community affected. places of worship should be sanctuaries, not targets.
@Veronica_iLse
@mharaguc
@cal_gif
I don’t think your overall immunity would weaken from a year of being careful as an adult given that your body generally has a much longer memory than that (why many vaccines only need to be given during childhood, or every 10+ years, etc).
@choirgirl181
@bridget__marc
Honestly - just be kind. It means a lot when we know the people we're working with see us and all we're trying to manage. Understand that if we're not helping with something, it's not bc we think we're too good - we're probably trying to finish 10 other things between cases.
Y'all!! Today was my last day of med school rotations, and I'm so glad I got to spend it in the OR. Here's to hoping I'll be back in one as a resident when July rolls around 😳😷🥰
@LahavHarkov
@mehdirhasan
I'm sorry, "conspiracy theory"????? There is literally no other way to describe the founding of the modern state of Israel, even if you cloak it in euphemisms
@Veronica_iLse
@mharaguc
@cal_gif
If you don’t have an inherent immunodeficiency from a genetic or medical condition, the idea of a weak immune system from lack of exposure to germs is (from my understanding at least) more related to fewer cumulative (mainly childhood) exposures
@thehill
When a government we support is killing children, destroying homes, imprisoning an entire population, depriving them of electricity and water, (and on and on) we must call it out.
it's pretty soul-crushing to be in the midst of this covid surge, watching numbers climb rapidly and seeing it's impacts in the hospital, and then hear political leaders actively, aggressively impeding public health efforts to protect people. make it make sense.
for anyone going through
#SOAP2022
if there's anything a stranger can help with, please DM me - happy to look over personal statements or be an ear if you just need to vent ♥️
@Z_sheed
During a recent interview, the PD brought up the IMG stigma and the fact that some programs won't even consider IMGs. He followed it up with "I think that says more about the program than it does about you." And it reinstilled a small bit of faith for me 😌
One of the most inspiring things about
@WomenSurgeons
conferences (regional and national) is that there is no shying away from discussing the difficult topics that matter.
#AWSfuture2021
@TJAlumniAG
This accusation is hilariously (and bitterly) ironic. I am a full grown adult literally on a trip with my (much beloved) parents in their country of origin right now. And *they're* the ones who taught me the values of empathy and equity that prompted me to side with TJAAG.
@kjdelay1
Palliative care. The way they can bring comfort to patients struggling with all kinds of symptoms not to mention the emotional and psychological burdens of serious conditions is so incredibly valuable. Every patient I've seen who's had them on board was so grateful for it.
So good to see my med school friend and mentor
@donald_chang
!! Can you tell which one of us just finished their 15th night in a row and which one is off to impress at
@AmCollSurgeons
leadership & advocacy summit??
@RyanMarino
I was just having this conversation today (not for the first time)!! Why can't we make the environment pleasant for everyone and not just the kiddos 🙃 our PICU has a sparkling starry sky ceiling and I love it
ok here we go, the WHY of how thrilled i am about my match day result: a thread (yes...it's long 🙃)
(but it's also the same as my insta caption so if you saw that, scroll on by!!)

@RyanMarino
Omg why didn't we think of just telling our septic/metastatic cancer/hemorrhagic shock patients to go for a run and eat a salad??? Incredible. Let's trade out the ICU for a track and a sweetgreen.
My favorite part of med school exams is when I wake up in a panic early the next morning suddenly remembering one thing I forgot on the exam 🙃 nice to know it is in my brain but just didn’t wanna come out when I needed it to!
While this is really the least of the issues to think about in Ida's aftermath, it's worth pointing out that MS4s in New Orleans are now going to have to navigate the next few crucial weeks of
#Match2022
potentially without power/water, or displaced from their homes.
Also along for the ride is Leila, with a background in middle of the night zoomies and trying to eat my hair. Talk to her about treats and her passion for packaging materials
@IEMcElroy
honestly i think the answer is automatically "never" to any question starting with "when am i too old to call my mom about x". right,
@ielbakry1
?
@anildash
@DickDoesGames
@ElenaAiles
@sswyrs
Idk I'm just not personally a fan of diverting conversations about sexism and misogyny experienced by women to discuss dick size and sexual techniques.
@cardy_ac
This is one of the saddest things about the Muslim community (though not unique to it), especially online - how much the judgment, criticism, and lecture attempts outweigh the spirit of Islam. It's futile trying to please everyone! There's always something to criticize.
it was a whirlwind <24 hrs in Savannah for
#SESC23
but it was worth it for my first podium presentation (and to see some friends and mentors from med school)!
for the record, my cousin
@yabutaleb7
is such a great reporter that i get news about my own hospital system from her before i hear it from the hospital 😂
so the thing about political views is that they are by definition tied to your beliefs and values and not, like, equivalent to your taste in sports or tv shows. so, yes! you are going to be judged based on them and there's a very good reason for that!
just fun medicine things: paying $455 to take a 3-4 hour exam to prove that i can speak english since i partially studied in a different english speaking country than the english speaking country i grew up in.
@ArifSohab
The point isn't that you're superior to that group. It's that an incorrect assumption is being made towards you that isn't made of others in your position...
@QueenMD2024
Wild of people to think the proper response to “I’m afraid to speak freely in front of a Black classmate" was "I should complain to my school" rather than "I should reflect on what that says about my words and the thoughts behind them"
@lsarsour
My favorite part is where he then ?? says there's no comparison to Hamas's ideology, as if to say - "well even the white supremacists aren't that bad"?? Which is truly a wild caveat to try and toss in there
@helalbennama
@Gabby_Brauner27
This is what seems most ridiculous to me. Why does it cost more even if you're taking it in the exact same locations in the US??
@KizzyPhD
Yes yes yes. And let's not forget the degree of political and financial will that has gone into these vaccines that often isn't there for other opportunities, even if the scientific community would like it to be.
@LilaGraceRose
Why yes, a comprehensive and objective fact based education on the reproductive system should absolutely be standard for every person in school! Not mutually exclusive with access to contraception and healthcare that allows women to make their own choices and plans.
almost lost my
@onepeloton
streak since i’m away from the bike thanks to ida…but thanks to
@RobinNYC
, beautiful running weather in my beautiful hometown neighborhood, and the
@Nike
outlet store for keeping it going 😅
Happy international women’s day to all the awesome women out there! We got to celebrate with a Q&A featuring Dr.
@NOLAobgyn
, Dr. Emily Bugeaud, Dr. Leise Knoepp, and Dr. Amy Rivere

I feel like this supports the idea of active vs. passive learning - watching a video to me is like reading a textbook. It provides useful information but does nothing to help me retain it.
wild to hear serious talk of doctors being "undeserving" of student loan forgiveness while also seeing incoming residents panic about finding affordable housing, or work food delivery jobs during their free time to stay afloat until then.
i haven't bragged about her in a while but just in case anyone was wondering, my cousin is still putting out amazing front page wapo journalism on the reg!
A tale of many pandemics: in year 3, the way you experience the pandemic depends on your health, power and access. Gov’t leaders say people have the tools to protect themselves, but there are vast inequities in ability to get/use those tools. My latest:
@kidney_boy
I think it's really crucial to think about why these demands are made on healthcare workers. In many cases here, it's not because of a genuine true shortage of people or resources - it's because our system is not willing to shift those resources appropriately.
Still a year out from my own match week but the fear and excitement is SO REAL!! So happy to see all the joyous news from classmates and on
#MedTwitter
but also very glad to see support for those left unmatched (for now).
y'all i finally got to try using my terrible arabic to speak to a patient!! i was, as expected, terrible but she seemed so happy and was very smiley and it was worth it
it is so unconvincing when people use "unity" as a way to gloss over the reasons people are divided. unity is not a worthwhile goal when it entails acceptance of the unacceptable.
i think the only thing i'm going to miss about studying for the USMLE is the illustrations in uworld explanations...artistic masterpieces that regularly have me bursting out laughing in the library
@kellytran95
@Almost_DrSease
My fave was hearing about a hypothetical "enemies match" possibility where you specifically only rank pairs where you never end up in the same place 😂
kind of a bummer how the excitement of reading my brilliant cousin's reporting is always followed by (well-written and researched!) evidence of how depressing things are in 2020
The U.S. will not join a global effort to develop, manufacture and equitably distribute a coronavirus vaccine, in part because the World Health Organization is involved. w/
@emilyrauhala
this is arguably the nerdiest thing i’ve ever tweeted but my current favorite thing is watching the slow peristalsis of the small intestine during surgery 👀 it’s so soothing!! i love it!!
Such impressive work being done in Uganda and worldwide in pursuit of equity in surgery (and wow, two sets of conjoined twins separated in <3 months!) Really appreciated
@KisaPhyllis
's point that both service provision and training/teaching must be balanced in global partnerships
"We have incredibly passionate and dedicated teams" -
@UCSF_CHESA
Director Doruk Ozgediz on surgical teams in resource limited settings. Certainly an apt description for himself and
@KisaPhyllis
, and their collaborators around the world.

@GICSurgery
@IGHSatUCSF
@traependergrast
I would genuinely bookmark a website/resource where someone compiled & updated what's currently popular among different age groups (could I sound any more like a childless Old? No)
FINALLY finished my 855 patient chart review that has consumed my last couple of months (except match week bc lbr I couldn't focus on *anything* that week.) Nice way to kick off Ramadan 😌
i should be studying for my finals but instead i have to explain to a white dude in my HS alumni group that affirmative action is not, in fact, 'racist'
On the one hand, I love the
#Match2022
#MedTwitter
community and the reminder that we’re all in this together - on the other hand my entire timeline has been some variation of “certified and submitted!” for about a week now 🤪
Observations about moving (other than it being the worst):
- I have way, way too many candles
- if someone offers to help, say yes (especially if it's your very strong brother who doesn't mind your every-15-min stressed out strategizing)
- it is not an ideal time for an interview
@Sophia_Ly_MD2b
@Amina__Z
Born in DC to Egyptian immigrants - my parents have always prioritized my education and made sure I had every opportunity to succeed. My dad
@drmagedhussein
has always been my inspiration - his patients used to rave to me about him when I worked a summer in his office!
@ArifSohab
Why do people always jump to the idea that you're looking down on another group if you're unhappy being mistaken for them? People often respond the same way to female physicians about being called a nurse.
@BillKristol
@csdickey
@realDonaldTrump
Nah, not really. A lot of the world is either laughing at us or horrified by the changes being made. Our international reputation has definitely suffered in many places since he took office.
@DrMigueQC
If you asked me as an adult, BME or global health (my undergrad and master's degree topics). But a younger Nadia was envisioning a combined career as a fashion designer and pop superstar 💅🏼 (even though I was also signing my homework "Dr. Nadia" at the time...)
Over the last couple of weeks (at least) every single tweet/post I've seen from a female physician about a problem or negative experience she's had has been accompanied by many replies denying or dismissing her experience, and usually also blaming her for what happened.
Me when I finally get back from hurricane evacuation trying to get my life together, meet rotation requirements, finish my supplemental eras application, and make it to LA by the end of the week to be a bridesmaid 😅
"AP: Have you gotten your shot?
Parton: No. I’m not going to get mine until some more people get theirs. I don’t want it to look like I’m jumping the line just because I donated money."
@DollyParton

When I was *on my primary care rotation* last year I tried to find myself a PCP and after calling like 10 places I couldn't find a single one that was accepting new patients and had an appointment available before I started my surgery sub-i like several weeks later
when you’re so absorbed in what you’re reading that you stay up way later than intended 👀 tonight that was me finishing “home is not a country” by
@mafiasafia
+ finding myself with a very full heart and appreciation for such a beautiful depiction of a muslim american experience
@CaseySeidemanMD
@alextatem
It did happen to me before I transitioned (female to male). After that, not only am I never asked to "pitch in", when I do clean something up or help with any traditional "nursing task", I'm usually either shoed away or praised like I just discovered the cure for cancer.
@gradydoctor
@DrNRedmond
I love this - one of my favorite things I heard during
@WomenSurgeons
#AWS2020
was this idea of passing on declined opportunities to others who might benefit. Struck me as a wonderful win-win
@jbullockruns
@IEMcElroy
I hate the idea that tunnel vision is what makes a good specialist! My father spent much of his practice doing primary care and geriatrics as well, but he loves and thrives in nephrology. It's been a privilege growing up learning from his breadth of knowledge. Don't give in!
