There is an empty corner desk in a resident workroom at GW. Now forever engraved in my mind, that desk is a harrowing reminder of the cost of medical training. In his final words, Dr. William West said that he was simply out of gas, that he had nothing left to give.

I want to present some eloquent solution to the crisis residents are facing, but I don't have the answers yet. To anyone reading this who works with residents — please show us grace. We recognize that this job is a privilege. We care deeply for our patients. But we are tired.

After Dr. West's memorial, I sat outside with a friend, an intern in a surgical specialty. We checked in and tried to process the impossible emotions of the preceding week. "This is my seventeenth consecutive day of work," she stated blankly.

To anyone reading this who is struggling — I have been there, and I am a phone call away if you need someone to talk to. I'm sorry this system will take and take from you until you have nothing left. This job is not worth your life. Please don't try to go through it alone.

Perhaps you should choose to be kind. If you read his obituary, it clearly states the contributory role of medical training in his death. ALL residencies are overly & needlessly taxing, but especially for those who go above & beyond for patients & families, as Dr. West did.

I adore the patient-centered design of the hospital where I work. I mean, a self-guided art walk?! This was implemented to engage patients as they begin to ambulate after surgery, and all works were hand-selected to evoke healing and comforting feelings.

Our healthcare system is broken. We aren't simply failing to provide accessible care, we are actively impeding it. I don't know how to even begin to fix this problem but health care for all seems like a good place to start. 🤷♀️

I've always felt uncomfortable saying, "The patient complained of ___" but continued to do so because it was how I was taught. That attitude allows the outdated & sometimes harmful rhetoric in medicine to propagate. It's time to reframe the way we speak about patients

On top of a long, difficult recovery, I grappled with constant stress over my medical bills. In an attempt to save costs, I opted against buying nearly every item on my surgeon's "post-op necessities" list (this definitely didn't make recovery any easier).
