tobacco control saved ~4M lives & added 76M yrs back into our communities bc we treated it like a health threat. #alcohol causes cancer too. but we’ve normalized the risk, stalled the response & cont. to ignore its heavy societal costs. we know the science. what’s stopping us?
New @AmericanCancer report led by @FarhadIslami finds nearly 4 million premature lung cancer deaths in the US were averted & 76 million years of life were gained between 1970–2022 due to reductions in cigarette smoking. https://t.co/N4ZRryIVXH

Staggering details from this story: - After TX banned abortion, rate of sepsis shot up more than 50% for women hospitalized when they lost their pregnancies in the 2nd trimester - The rate of maternal deaths in TX rose 33% btwn 2019 + 2023 even as national rate fell by 7.5%
NEW: Texas Banned Abortion. Then Sepsis Rates Soared. ProPublica’s first-of-its-kind analysis is the most detailed look yet into a rise in life-threatening complications for women experiencing pregnancy loss under Texas’ abortion ban. https://t.co/0WnTQejtkc

A new analysis suggests ~2 in 5 liver transplants from donation after circulatory death donors, recorded as not using machine perfusion (MP), may actually have undergone MP—potentially underestimating MP’s impact in transplant studies. Read more: https://t.co/N5xlbcJgoA

Consuming alcohol, even in moderate amounts, is associated with health harms, but participating in “Dry January” and using other strategies can help limit them

RFK's Children's Health Defense is making money selling a child's onesie with the phrases "No Vax, No Problem" and "Unvaxxed, Unafraid" to parents for $26. Now that RFK is "pro-vaccine", will he ask his organization to stop selling these vehemently anti-vaccine products?

Great working with @MMendizabalMD on this! Still much to learn about Liver disease in CF and how CFTR modulators may reduce liver injury and the need for combined lung-liver transplant. The decrease in lung transplant is encouraging! @pennsurgery
Happy to share our latest research on CFTR modulators and their impact on organ transplantation in CF patients ❌Liver Tx rates remained stable post-CFTR mod introduction ✅Lung tx dropped by 81%. ‼️More data needed to assess liver outcomes 🔒 https://t.co/UcaO8BCer7

National data is important to understand how NRP and ex-situ MP are being used for transplantation, and to track outcomes. Using this as well as @Aortologist method to identify NRP cases, we can create more rigorous TXP studies with observational data! https://t.co/Y1utUCU2Rc

Donation after circulatory death (DCD) could account for the largest expansion of the donor allograft pool in the contemporary era. However, the organ yield and associated costs of normothermic...

Using this method, we may be able to identify “back to base” machine perfusion techniques, and cases where the MP variable was incorrectly assigned. Importantly, up to a quarter or more of transplanted DCD livers that are reported as not undergoing MP, likely underwent MP!

Prior work has alluded to misclassification of liver machine perfusion, but none had proposed a way to identify or quantify the degree of misclassification. By using “cold ischemia time” (more accurately preservation time), we ID livers that likely underwent MP!

While we wait for national data collection strategies to catch up, studies are being published with flawed data on liver machine perfusion using UNOS/OPTN data! We provide a method to quantify the potential misclassification bias when using current data…

Excited about our work in @amjtransplant ! We quantify a gap in US data on liver machine perfusion(MP), and estimate that up to a 1/4 of transplanted DCD livers that are listed as no MP, received MP! Important with the MP boom since 2022! @Penn_Transplant @PennLDI @NCSP_Penn
A new report published in @amjtransplant by @munoz_nic, Emily Minus, @ElizabethSonnenberg and Dr. Peter Abt quantifies the underreporting of liver machine perfusion in US national data.
