Spending time with people who have spent their careers restoring burned records was some of the most fun I've ever had reporting, and my research on my grandfather took all sorts of surprising twists. I hope you'll check out the story. 💜
During a cross-country move, my mom lost the menorah that my 17-year-old grandfather smuggled out of Germany when he escaped after Kristallnacht. Today, nearly three years after that move and exactly two weeks before Chanukah, she found it in the attic. I'm verklempt.
And with that, it's over. Deadspin no longer employs a single writer or editor. I am gutted but so very proud of this group of people.
Deadspin was a good website.
Having your own students arrested for trespassing — a crime only because you suspended their right to be on campus — is just so obviously, horribly beyond the pale literally no matter what they were protesting.
It’s very striking and disheartening that a letter pleading for better coverage is being deliberately interpreted by a handful of prominent journalists as a demand for no coverage.
I think it’d be good for more people to know that the exact same private equity executives responsible for destroying hundreds of jobs at Vice — Fortress Investment Group — are also responsible for destroying thousands of jobs at Gannett newspapers.
@jimbrady
we worked at the washington post at the same time, so you've met me many times, but believe me, i was never under the impression you gave a shit what i thought.
bari, i have no desire to be involved here, but your synopsis of the events of 2004/2005 is unfair. you weren't simply "advocating for students' rights," you were calling professors racist. i know because i wrote or edited most of the stories about it.
I want to address a baseless accusation being peddled by
@ggreenwald
and others on this platform. When I was an undergraduate student at Columbia, I advocated for the rights of students to express their viewpoints in the classroom.
It has come to my attention that not enough of you watched my new favorite athlete Christina Clemons qualify for the Olympics last night while wearing earrings shaped like bags of Cool Ranch Doritos.
Not sure it’s fair to assume he had people teargassed for the sake of a photo op. Seems like he may well have planned the photo op for the sake of having people teargassed.
Bari Weiss trying to get a Palestinian professor fired, 2005 vs. Bari Weiss attacking people who say the NYT should not publish articles advocating for military suppression of dissent, 2020. (I cannot believe I have had these woman's takes in my brain for 15 years.)
it’s never not enlightening to remember how many rich white men enthusiastically choose “there’s no need to pay people a living wage” as the hill they want to die on.
It's been nearly 24 hours since I saw this and I'm still LIVID. Taking on more work for less money will not save you when the hedge fund in charge decides they don't need journalists. And it's deeply unethical for a self-appointed senior statesman to say otherwise.
Grant Wahl wasn’t kind only to colleagues. Years ago, I watched a teen ask him a mildly impertinent question about his responsibility to grow women’s soccer, and his answer was unforgettably gracious and thoughtful. And then he told the kid to email him so they could talk more.
I am begging someone to report the feature on the romance novelist who faked her own death to sell books, used a sockpuppet account to become the moderator of her own Facebook group for two years, then announced she was actually alive and writing more books.
ESPN big time reporters are promoting Disney+ on Twitter
1. ESPN does do journalism, but it also does business.
2. These reporters do journalism, but they also do business.
3. If the company that pays you millions, asks you to promote its top project, not much of a choice.
Just before Kristallnacht, when he was 17, my grandfather fled his home in Berlin and was later stripped of his citizenship by Nazi decree.
Last week, after an 18-month process, the German government approved my application for restoration of citizenship. 🥲
Even if you know what happened, *watching* cops flee because they heard gunfire in a classroom full of children, then refuse to take a single step back down that hallway for 44 minutes, is stomach-churning.
I’m genuinely tickled that rather than write job descriptions for the new and improved Deadspin, they copied and pasted the ones I wrote as part of the vision of the site they despised.
Dave McKenna, a non-tweeter, has also resigned from Deadspin. Dave is quite simply one of the greatest sportswriters in history. What an incalculable loss.
I stand with the former
@Deadspin
workers who decided not to bow to the greed of private equity vultures like
@JimSpanfeller
. This is the kind of greed that is destroying journalism across the country, and together we are going to take them on.
I increasingly feel like the only or at least the most important story is how private equity is hollowing out and destroying every aspect of our existence
since APPARENTLY this needs to be clarified, I didn't say the Times never mentioned her. she was included in a couple of political roundup pieces, and there was an editorial criticizing Crowley for not debating her. both are different from an article about the race.
The most recent story I wrote for the New York Times was (correctly!) held for two days at the last minute because an unrelated news event would have made it appear to be in bad taste.
Report for America, which funds of hundreds of local journalists, will no longer support positions at Gannett, Alden, or any newspapers owned by private equity or hedge funds because "that business model isn’t the future for robust local news."
people are a little scattered tonight (we did some pre-mourning drinking last night) but if you venmo me at megangreenwell I’ll get drinks when we get together.
Professional news: Aug. 23 is my last day at
@Deadspin
. I'll have a new thing to announce next week, but for the moment I'm going to feel sad that I'm leaving and very grateful that I got to work with this group of brilliant weirdos.
@joonlee
Man, it’s one thing to see the team move, but the outright contempt for A’s fans from both the team and the league makes me think I’m just out on baseball altogether.
Better framing: If NYC closes schools and continues to give restaurant owners and workers *no way to survive without indoor dining,* *the government's* priorities are screwed up on all fronts.
I am no Harvard professor, but it seems to me if you're asked to sign an open letter when you don't know all the facts, a good response might be "I'm sorry, I can't sign an open letter when I don't know all the facts."
More than half of the 38 Harvard professors who signed an open letter backing an accused sexual harasser on the college's faculty now say they no longer stand by the statement.
Adams also has the backing of a powerful political machine! Nobody who followed this race ever thought it was about Twitter follower counts or “Twitter progressivism;” this is a dumb straw man.
Nothing but respect for the guy who just called me from “U.S. Customs.”
him: “Do you know why I’m calling?”
me: “Yeah, because you’re scammers.”
him (deep sigh): “Yeah, we’re scammers, fuck off.”
I've been obsessing over private equity — how it works and how it affects workers and communities — for a few years now, so I'm very excited to be writing a book about it!
It’s the one-year anniversary of the best essay I’ve ever read. Deadspin was a good website, but
@drewmagary
remains a good human, and we are all so lucky he is still here.
Together with
@barstoolsports
, we’re bringing you a Twitter-only monthly sports show called Barstool Live, featuring the hosts of Pardon My Take, plus former
@NFL
All-Pro Pat McAfee.
#NewFronts
Deadspin now has a pitch guide, which includes actual examples of pitches we green-lit—with explanations of why they worked—instead of vague platitudes about what makes good stories.
The journalists of
@ColumbiaSpec
and
@WKCRFM
are the best of the best; I’m in awe of what incredible work they’re doing while also trying to keep themselves and each other safe. Isabella is running her newsroom better than many professionals.
The last year or so has seen the death or decimation of ESPN the Mag, OTL, Deadspin, and SB Nation, not to mention dozens of local newspaper sports sections. Even if you don't watch games, losing outlets committed to reporting on the sports industry will affect you too.
If you have questions about why G/O Media's CEO is scared of reader feedback, or his understanding of the company's union contract, or why he seems to hate the sites he bought, a good place to ask would be jim
@g
-omedia.com.
our bosses heard from so many of you that they’ve disabled forwarding for this email address. direct action works, and they’re scared of it.
we’ve spent the morning planning next steps. stay tuned, and thank you for standing with us.
Thinking about when my husband
@djheller
spent weeks helping care for patients fighting Covid in a *tent in Central Park* because government failures overcrowded every hospital in NYC.
Trump has gotten in a car so he can wave to supporters outside Walter Reed. As you can see from footage, this meant multiple agents riding in a car with Trump while he carries the coronavirus
It is fucking shameful that craven morons are continually allowed to buy good publications and then destroy them with no regard for journalism or even making money.
“Many people praised me for my bravery for having done this — to which I could only say: Millions of people do this kind of work every day for their entire lives — haven’t you noticed them?”
RIP to one of the all-time greats.
The way my colleagues at walking out with their heads held high in the face of total cowardice on the part of their bosses is a fucking inspiration. I am so proud to be a Deadspinner.
Samer was the conscience of Deadspin. He always has the best instincts on the trickiest issues, and everyone on staff looks up to him and follows his lead. He is a top-tier journalist and I was lucky to work with him.
The hill I will die on is that job descriptions should not specify years of experience, and that doing so helps keep newsrooms homogenous. Specify skills, not age!
@jimbrady
@JordanRaanan
@espnbob
Laura is a wildly skilled beat reporter who's also paid as a professional, and it's an exceedingly strange look for a middle-aged man to call a young woman "smug" for drawing attention to poor working conditions.
It brings me no pleasure to announce that the writing advice about stopping for the day when you've got momentum — and, conversely, pushing through when you don't — (the craft people call this "parking downhill," apparently) REALLY fucking works.
Easy to blame Spanfeller, a moron, but this is also a VERY classic private equity "gameplan": Buy a thing, realize you have no idea how to grow it or even not ruin it, shut it down. RIP Jez, my first favorite website.
I don’t watch Jeopardy, but I am extremely invested in the guy who won three times but was apparently bad on the buzzer, then began a multi-week Facebook meltdown about how Jeopardy is not the REAL quizzing world and compared himself to Muhammad Ali.
y’all have been very generous, I’m going to split whatever we don’t spend on drinks among the icons who forwent severance to stand up for Deadspin so they have a bit of a financial cushion.
Seems worth applying to these staff writer jobs at
@NiemanLab
both because it’s a chance to do interesting work (remotely!) for a great shop, and because they write job descriptions that include lines like this.
that
@Thrillist
article we all loved about the burger place kept a domestic-violence conviction off the record and passed it off as “serious things that can happen in every family.” that is egregious journalistic malpractice.
Some personal news: Inspired by Martha Stewart, I will be accepting no more than three Zoom meetings a day and spending the rest of my time wandering around greeting farm animals.
My father, Jim Greenwell, died this week. I was by his side with my sister and my mom, his wife of 40 years.
Dad could fix *anything* and was funny as hell and knew so much about so many things. Everyone loved to be around him.
