Earlier today,
@JimSpanfeller
, CEO of G/O Media, fired our colleague and longtime Deadspin Deputy Editor Barry Petchesky. This will not stand. We will have updates soon.
1) lmao
2) scare mongering about dues is a classic union busting tactic!! is your boss ever worried about where literally any other part of your paycheck goes? are they out here trying to stop your landlord from raising the rent?
our bosses heard from so many of you that they’ve disabled forwarding for this email address. direct action works, and they’re scared of it.
we’ve spent the morning planning next steps. stay tuned, and thank you for standing with us.
The GMG Union has been informed that posts across our websites asking for reader feedback on an autoplay ad campaign were taken down by management. We condemn this action in the strongest possible terms. (1/2)
It’s been a long road but tonight we won a strong contract that we’re incredibly proud of.
Details TBA, but for now all you need to know is: organizing works, there is power in a union, we can change this industry if we all stand together. Organize. Your. Workplace.
The Onion and GMG Unions are saddened to report that our colleagues at Gizmodo Español, a site that once housed original, quality Spanish-language reporting, have been replaced en masse by an AI translation service.
We were informed today that our Editorial Director Paul Maidment has resigned from G/O Media. We look forward to working with management to find a new Editorial Director who understands our brands and respects our editorial independence.
We’re re-posting the statement as a screenshot here as we gather more information. We thank you, our readers and supporters, for standing with us through this process. (2/3)
Our members have been so grateful for all your support thus far. We have created a fund to help blunt the impacts of going without pay while we continue to fight for a fair contract. Please donate and share:
We were at the bargaining table until 1 a.m. this morning. We could have gotten a deal but the company lawyer said our proposals were “so close yet so far away.”
We're only $3,000 apart from the company on salary minimums for our lowest-paid workers. Three thousand.
Hey New York City! Want to fight for independent journalism? Head down to Union Square between now and 7pm for more information.

if you're as frustrated by our sites' spammy new autoplay ads as we are, now's the chance to contact G-O's management to let them know.

There is now a digital and physical picket line outside G/O Media. Industry colleagues, please support

by not crossing either. Learn more about why we're striking at

Instead of relying on the talented journalists at Gizmodo Español, G/O Media has enacted an automation that takes English-language Gizmodo articles, translates them poorly into Spanish, and posts them on Gizmodo Español almost immediately, with no Spanish-language editing.
It's been one week since G/O Media began running AI-generated articles, and we still have not received a proper response from management. Sign our letter to let
@lea
,
@merrillbro
, and
@JimSpanfeller
know they must stop this practice immediately.
We offer our deepest sympathies to the Gizmodo Español team and share in their frustration as jobs for working journalists continue to disappear worldwide.
it's been 3 days since 97% of G/O Media's editorial staff told Great Hill partners that Jim Spanfeller is an unfit leader who has created a chaotic, unproductive work environment and gravely harmed both the integrity of our newsroom and the stability of the business
The Gizmodo Español team comprised of four full-time employees—one editor and three writers—who have been employed by G/O media for over a combined 25 years. Because of the nature of their yearly contracts, they will not receive adequate severance.
Unfortunately this move to eliminate the Español team represents yet another broken promise from G/O Media CEO Jim Spanfeller and Editorial Director Merrill Brown, who have repeatedly said that the company's AI experiments were intended to supplement human writing, not replace it
Here's a quick look at some media CEOs who are currently taking salary cuts to keep workers employed and businesses afloat. G/O Media CEO Jim Spanfeller, though, doesn't seem to want to keep up with his peers or adhere to industry standards.
The abrupt and callous firing of a Black woman comes a mere day after Business Insider reported on G/O’s targeted mistreatment of a queer staffer of color. Imani’s termination follows an ugly pattern from management, particularly the HR department.
Adding insult to injury, when the Gizmodo staff objected to having their bylines attached to machine translations, G/O management removed all bylines from Gizmodo Español—even the bylines of the four journalists who were laid off by G/O Media this week.
In June, G/O Media employees—both members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community—asked the company to provide us with comprehensive trans healthcare benefits, in the name of healthcare equity and justice. Here’s an update, five months later:
This AI effort has been pushed by G/O Media CEO

We remain stringently opposed to G/O Media's use of AI-generated content and pledge to continue fighting on behalf of journalists and the indispensable public service they provide.
imagine making consistently catastrophic business decisions, needlessly killing a beloved website, alienating every single one of your staffers, exploding in the workplace.... and keeping your job.
employees at this company have been fired, by Jim himself, for far less.
union dues help pay for lawyers, organizers, and negotiators who'll make your company give you a higher salary and better benefits. so of course bosses want to convince you they're some wild, unmanageable expense

one example: our union contract stipulates a 3% cost of living raise each year. that means an employee making our minimum salary (minimums! another union benefit!) gets a $1,500 salary bump each year. kinda seems like the dues were worth it!
Please help us convince G/O Media and Jim Spanfeller to reach a fair contract with the GMG Union by taking a few minutes out of your day to sign a letter to Jim's private equity bosses🙂
We’re asking for $63,000 for our first tier—and they're insisting on $60,000. The California overtime exemption is $62,400. We aren't asking for much: Our owner, Great Hill Partners, has raised billions and it can afford to share the wealth
ladies, if he:
-bought Elite Daily (only after half the staff was cut and moved to contract work)
-bought Mic (only after unionized staff was fired)
-bought Gawker (and stuck a bunch of weird clickbait on it)
that’s not your man. that’s Bryan Goldberg.
so far, management has only responded to our concerns by issuing false statements about our union's fight for an equitable workplace.
is this how Great Hill manages all of its assets?
So we’re preparing for week 2 of
#GMGstrike
—including a visit to our friends at Great Hill Partners in Boston!
Please support and share our fundraiser so our 100+ workers can outlast these private equity bosses:
we've seen it firsthand—private equity's biggest "contribution" to the economy is in wiping out jobs, and in a lot of cases, entire news outlets. this is a feature, not a bug
It's Day 2 of
#gmgstrike
, and we are upping our goal to $55,000—the minimum salary for our lowest-paid Union workers. This is considered a low income in New York City—where many of our Unit lives, and one of the cities management mandates workers to live
