The U.S. has set its sights on an ambitious climate change goal: net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. What would it take to get there?
@novapbs
's new documentary, “Chasing Carbon Zero,” premieres RIGHT NOW on PBS.
We have excellent energy planning models and climate models. But they don’t often talk to each other. We can fix this gap — which will allow us to build a more reliable and resilient energy system in the face of a changing climate.
When speaking to
@SenCortezMasto
on the federal government's role in assessing risk in energy systems, Dr.
@mclott
states that we have "the science, modeling, and technology to assess it, so there's an opportunity for Congress to act to make sure that we are assessing that risk."

Also - electrification isn’t the single best decarbonization solution for all applications. 50-60% of final energy demand? Sure. But not 100%. This means that we need both 1)a lot more electricity and 2)other fuels (eg hydrogen...) to practically and fully decarbonize.
Good thread. I am a big fan of electrification b/c it allows for the use of clean sources of power. But we would be foolish to think that electricity doesn’t have big downsides. It can have blackouts, trigger wildfires & single point Failure modes that are catastrophic.
