ENERGY PREDICTIONS (April 19, 2025):. Trump’s 2nd Administration is now 3 months old, which is enough time to know his policy priorities. Based on these policy initiatives & other macro-trends, I've made some predictions for the state of domestic energy at the end of his term. 🧵.

Coal for power = dated, dirty and pricey. Coal for products = good idea.

Trump and @SecretaryWright are pushing coal for grid reliability. But 50 years of policy meddling teaches that government efforts to prop up coal for energy don't work well. But coal for products? That's appealing. @ASMEdotorg.

It doesn’t make any sense. Unless the goal is to shrink the economy and hobble American competitiveness.

Though this part of Texas doesn't have many year-round residents, the number of Texans who can draw a connection to the region is vast and emotional ties are deep. Sending wishes for peace and love to everyone who was affected. /END.

A grandmother who retired to Hunt and hosted one of my wife's college classmates for summer vacations was swept away. Though the death of an 80-something grandparent cuts different than for an 8-year old, the sadness and hole left behind are real.

We're so thankful they made it out. But not everyone's fortunes were so rich. One of the sweet little girls who died was a former student of my sister's at Hill Elementary here in Austin. She would have been in third grade.

The Texas Hill Country is special with its beauty, community, and hardship. And its floods are among the flashiest and fiercest. We don't have kids at the camps this summer, but we know people whose kids have been safely evacuated including by helicopter.

We loved it so much, we also sent our kids to Camp Flaming Arrow for several summers in the 2000s and 2010s so they could create memories along the Guadalupe River.

The Webber Family would slide down the Ingram Dam--now destroyed--as a fun treat on the way back to Austin from our summer adventures. My mother loved sliding down that dam, which had a way of snapping her out of her dark moods.

I swam in the Guadalupe and canoed from the camp to the famous Hunt store to buy candy. We hiked those hills and sang songs around the fire pits so loudly the neighbors across the river in Hunt surely heard us.

My siblings & I spent a few weeks each summer for many years in the 1970s and 1980s at the old YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow, which is on the South Fork of the Guadalupe River just downstream of Camp Mystic & before Camp La Junta (where some of the survivors & victims were recovered).

I've been slow to post b/c the tragedy is still unfolding, but I wanted to share how gut-wrenching the floods along the Guadalupe River have been. We're not directly affected, but it feels close to home. Below is a picture of Camp Flaming Arrow, next door to Camp Mystic.🧵
