🖤 Big Update!
Today, we're launching a new Home Tab that delivers a daily selection of the highest quality reading from the world's best minds.
If you've been with us for a while, you know we’ve experimented with several approaches to curation — Staff Picks, Read Something…
Today, we're delighted to release one our our most requested integrations:
@obsdmd
!
With our new Obsidian plugin, you can sync your Matter highlights and notes to your Obsidian vault.
Here's
@HunterClarke
(who built the plugin) on how to set it up:
When we launched audio, we were overwhelmed by the reaction.
And, there was a common request: more human-sounding voices.
Today we're excited to bring you just that. A voice so human it can be hard to distinguish from, well, a human.
Give it a listen (tap unmute):
We’ve been quiet, we know.
Since folks have asked, no, we’re not retreating from Twitter. We (still) love Twitter.
We’ve just been heads down on a big project.
It's not AI, but it's magical. Shipping in a couple days.
Stay tuned!🖤
Pleased to feature a wide range of tech writers in our new Discover section!

We decided to share this week's 👇 (1/4)️
Big news. Now you can read all your newsletters – free and paid – in Matter!
We live in a golden age of newsletters.
Problem is, your inbox isn't for reading. Most people want to spend less time there, not more.
A better way awaits...
We rolled out a new architecture that makes the inbox feed 25x faster for the heaviest users (for whom the feed had gotten excruciatingly slow). It's now 3x faster for the median user and loads in <300ms for 99% users.
A bit more background for the technically curious…
We're kicking off a major cycle to improve PARSING!
(The dark art of turning messy webpages into clean articles.)
While our parser's performance exceeds legacy read-later apps, it's not yet where we know it can be.
We'll be posting updates in this thread. 👇️
Eyes tired from all that screen time?
Guess what.
You can now 🎧️ LISTEN 🎧️ to your articles! And blogs. And Substacks. In a natural voice, generated with deep learning.

Typography can be beautiful as well as practical.
Today we're excited to give Premium users an unprecedented degree of control over the appearance of words, paragraphs, and pages in Matter.
Read on for a tour of your new style options.
Sometimes a quote is so good, plain text won't do.
So, by popular demand, we've made it easy to generate bold quoteshots, optimized for Twitter readability.

Audio & highlights are both powerful. Trouble is, you can't highlight if you're not looking at the screen.
Until now.
Introducing AUDIO HIGHLIGHTS: Capture highlights while you listen! 🎧🖍️
To make an audio highlight, simply squeeze both volume buttons at the same time.
As iPad-first readers, we're *very* glad to ship a number of upgrades to the iPad experience:

* Split-screen mode
* Margins are a touch target for scrolling
* Instant highlighting with Apple pencil
PS. The smart keyboard will come in handy next week!
iOS 16 is here.
It opens the gates to a feature that will change the game for readers.

Introducing our NEW BROWSER EXTENSION! 🧭
Now, in addition to saving for later, you can convert any web article into a beautiful reader mode that toggles dark with a keystroke.
This is our extension's biggest upgrade to date. It won't be the last. ;)
The latest version of the Matter Obsidian plugin now includes custom templates! You can tweak the output of all of your Matter highlights and notes to fit your personal knowledge system. Shoutout to
@HunterClarke
for putting together this highly requested feature 🙏
We've been on the hunt for communities full of thoughtful, curious minds to be Matter's earliest members.
On Deck was a no-brainer.
Welcome,

Introducing Minimaps!
It's often useful to get a visual overview of an article so you can quickly gauge its contents and jump to sections of interest.
We've created Minimaps so you can do just that.
From any article, two-finger tap to see the Minimap.
Most of the best writing was *not* created in the past year.
Yet our feeds are dominated by the past 24 hours, in what
@david_perell
calls the "The Never-Ending Now".
is a counterweight to that, an access point to writing that stands the test of time.
Audio queuing is finally here! ⏯️
Now you can listen to your newsletters, blogs, and articles as a playlist.
Read while you walk. Read while you drive. Read while you fold laundry. You get the gist. 🤓

Hot on the heels of Quoteshots, we're excited to release our first widget — curated highlights!
Everyday, we'll select fresh highlights showcasing noteworthy articles & writers.

Small touch: Old dates are accented to draw attention to evergreen content.
Our last release of the year, a bundle of small improvements to make reading in Matter just a tad smoother:

- save links from long press
- return to location
- better publisher metadata
- autoplay: on
- undo actions
Happy holidays from the team!

PS. We're continually improving our parsing. This week, we've also added support for code blocks.
Words are my matter. (Ursula K. Le Guin)
It's been a motto of sorts, now passed to our Patrons.

2/ Go to location
3/ Export
4/ Offline mode
Today, we’re making it easier for you to see highlights from the people you follow in Matter.
We’re particularly excited about this feature because we love marginalia! And, have heard from so many of you that it’s part of what you love about reading in Matter.
UPDATE ✨ Do you look forward to our weekly roundups? You can now find our weekly roundup in the app every weekend!
Fun fact: This feature was built by our intern, Rhea
@rheamalik0612
who was 15 when she wrote us a great cold email to start it all... 🧵
✨ Readable Podcast improvements:
• Filter Queue for Podcasts, Articles, and/or YouTube.
• Play sheet is more delightful (see: button animations).
• Scrubber is more streamlined.
• Transitions are smoother.
• Haptic feedback is more dialed.
Chapters + Summarization coming…
Well, darn.
Just squeaking in before the holiday, we were excited to bring you our

most-requested feature.🖍️
But alas, Apple's Dec 23-27 app store freeze applies to TestFlight, too.
It'll have to wait til Monday.
Peace, rest, & good vibes to all!
Update: This is a big one! If parsing is blocked by Javascript or cookie requirements, we re-parse using a more powerful technique.
This resolves 138 bug reports and 21,000 pieces of incorrectly parsed content. Woot!
Beyond the obvious (Figma, Slack, Notion, etc), special gratitude to these 5 apps, which we use dozens (sometimes 100s) of times per day. Each shaves seconds off repetitive tasks and is well-crafted and fun to use.
