I found a definition for love this year that made the concept of unconditional love coherent to me. Love is a pattern of attention . In every person/place/thing/idea there is some reflection of βthe goodβ. When you love something, you orient towards whatever glimmer of good is in.
Nobody knows what "unconditional love" means. They say they love their partner unconditionally and then you're like "would you still love them if they cheated on you and raped your children" and they're like "no, of course not" and then you have to explain what a condition is.

This seems like the sort of crux that is likely to shift some downstream belief of mine in a surprising way. Not sure which one yet.
This is interesting because it shows that you can give an animal (a hueman) the mere *appearance* of fighting back, even if totally ineffective and inconsequential, and they will derive enough hope from it to go on. Many applications of this in politics.

Really more of a response to the suggestion that outlawing birth control wouldnβt quickly dramatically reshape our whole culture.
I think we could prohibit contraception today and it would be an unmitigated disaster. It wouldn't force the return of a culture better for families, and I doubt it would even dramatically improve the birth rate except amongst those with low intelligence and impulse control.
