Part of this is probably because a lot of these older carols are modal (not strictly major or minor); they sound haunting & ancient because they come from a time before tonality! Which actually wasn’t that long ago, tonality didn’t really exist until the early 18th c.

Extremely funny update: client emailed me back to say $50 is too low and they’ll be paying me $60/hour
So I gave my academic editing/researching rate as $40-50/hr and I thought that was pretty reasonable given that’s about what I charge for private lessons (aka an hour of my expertise) but I told a colleague that and they reacted like that’s crazy high. What say you, Twitter?
