So, here’s a fun thing that’s happening in classical music academia: a tenured professor who used a scholarly journal to platform racist bullshit is suing a grad student *at his own institution* for saying that platforming racism in a scholarly journal is...bad.
Music Twitter, tell me about the Weird Lil Guys you knew in music school. Not the creeps! Just your favorite quirky music student behavior. Also happy ten-year college reunion to me 🙃
what's your pop culture white whale? i mean unreleased/unrealized stuff like "the day the clown cried" - mine is the rumored jay-z blueprint 3 track "crispy benjamins" which supposedly sampled regina spektor's "chemo limo"
it’s the way peeta mellark pulled the ‘if it weren’t for the baby’ card outta nowhere, plunging the entire capitol into chaos with nothing but his wits, he really was THAT bitch
For those of you not in the classical music world, this is a reaction to people getting rightfully upset that a conductor SLAPPED a singer ACROSS THE FACE backstage
If you want conductors to become the faceless time-beaters of the 18th and early 19th centuries, you will inevitably remove much of the charismatic authority that has given classical music its pre-eminence in culture and society
So my family has big news and I can finally say it publicly: I have a sister! 26 years ago our mom had a baby and I was told they were my brother, but a few months ago she called and let me know that she’s actually my sister 💜 Anyway I’m beyond thrilled for her!!!
Hey quick reminder, non-Native American folks please stop using the term “spirit animal”! We’ve been told many times that it’s not for us, so let’s fix it.
@tweetjaleesa
The number of white people on this thread proving the point that we need to hear MORE voices, not less...woof. Hint: telling a WOC that she needs to be quiet & “civil” is not it, folks.
@DrMaDMo
Thank you for sharing this. Though I wish we didn’t have to keep hearing these same stories over and over again for people to understand that Black folks are constantly terrorized in this country.
UGH this is coming up on Facebook for me because senior folks in classical music circles are sharing it and I just…god, I don’t have the energy to fight with people about this right now. I know I should.
@Rach_Danielle_
@beesquared0912
First, it doesn’t sound like this guy has kids. Second, what you’re saying is so unreasonable I don’t even know how to respond. Sorry that people doing their jobs is so offensive to you!
Just got home from rehearsal; snowing all the way there and back. And things are grim in the world. But one cool thing is that 32 years ago on this day I was born 🤷🏻♀️
@anne_theriault
Part of this is probably because a lot of these older carols are modal (not strictly major or minor); they sound haunting & ancient because they come from a time before tonality! Which actually wasn’t that long ago, tonality didn’t really exist until the early 18th c.
An orchestra in the next state over from where I live just announced that they’re performing one of the pieces I wrote my DMA dissertation/lecture about…would it be weird to reach out to them? As far as I know my lecture-recital in February 2020 was the US premiere.
A friend has alerted me via email to the "singular conducting style" of Dutch baroque specialist Pieter Jan Leusink. I have made a short compilation for ease of sharing on social media platforms. Pure joy.
So I gave my academic editing/researching rate as $40-50/hr and I thought that was pretty reasonable given that’s about what I charge for private lessons (aka an hour of my expertise) but I told a colleague that and they reacted like that’s crazy high. What say you, Twitter?
Idk if it works in every professional situation, but my mentor once told me to never give an excuse but to just write I will not be there,” and it has served me well for close to a decade now.
Help, my wife is attempting an Egrigious Lie and tell me that buttered cinnamon-sugar toast is a common snack from childhood???? Surely this isn’t true??
Watched Encanto. Thought it was gorgeously animated and acted and I loved the story. But LMM’s music just continues to not do it for me and I’m starting to wonder if I’m the only person on earth who feels that way???
I’ve had a few students who simply did not turn in work reach out to me about their grades and I don’t want to be a cop but also…my syllabus is super clear? And the semester is over!
This image is honestly more beautiful and cathartic than anything in TRoS. I really can’t thank
@kylorenvevo
enough for her vivid, gorgeous writing. Even if LFL doesn’t come through, we still get to
#bringbackbensolo
through incredible fan works like Thea’s.
Hi. Uh. I just had a very amiable but real breakup of a decade-long relationship. It’s…fine? And doesn’t actually change all that much? But it’s a lot, too.
I’ve been mostly chill about this for the past year but, uh, two things.
1. This might sound silly but Ben Solo’s death was the first character death that ever really, really hurt me.
2. Knowing the it wasn’t the plan all along makes me so, so, angry.
Me: "Did you know that Ben was going to die when you were making T L J? Did you know that from the beginning?"
Rian: "No, I did not. No."
Me, irritated because I realize that killing Ben Solo was not always the plan. Rian notices my expression and sigh of disgust
So we picked “The Banshee” for one of our listening ID questions on the final exam and the prof & I BOTH forgot that at the beginning of the Norton Anthology recording someone says “THE BANSHEE” before the piece starts 😭
CW weight loss / health
So, I have NAFL (non-alcoholic fatty liver) which means…weight loss. And cutting out alcohol. As someone with a history of disordered eating, I am scared and sad and could use all the good vibes you can spare.
I cut my bangs shorter than I meant to but actually they are cute! Also, here’s the Fenty mattemoiselle in Griselda. Gorgeous color, though I’m totally terrified to wear it in public.
This is really fascinating because I gave up coffee for three years and it was actually so bad for my adhd symptoms that I recently started having 1 cup per day again and it has helped tremendously
🧵Can I tell you a wild story that is scary but then turns out ok? For months, my husband has been feeling light-headed. He'd get up from his chair, feel woozy and have to steady himself. He chalked it up to low blood pressure and work stress. It's been a rough time. 1/11
