it seems like it might be Premium only? He tried to join from an unverified account and was unable to (with feature-flags) - however I was able to join.

Yeah very basic functionality on these older ones now.. although on my 2nd Gen iPod touch, a few years ago (2021 or 2022) the App Store worked, so idk why now it’s broken?
