He was 28. Takeoff, the then-kid who convinced his uncle (Quavo) to start rapping then helped change the flow of rap. The undisputed best rapper in Migos (his uncle told me so himself just a few months ago). What a loss.
On turning down the Super Bowl halftime show: “I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler. There’s things within that organization that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way.”

The most irritating part of this is how the black woman would’ve been perceived as “aggressive” or “overreacting” by many people if she’d had a different response.
I was just in court where a judge denied bond for Gunna and set his trial date for Jan. 9, 2023. Prosecutors allege YSL is a gang, not just a record label. They also alleged Gunna serves in a “command” role. More to come for
@billboard
Verzuz, a show that was literally created in response to the pandemic, shouldn’t have had people in the same room at any point during the past year. Full stop.
I’m not having a domestic violence conversation on Twitter because this isn’t a safe place to do so. The one thing I will say is I hope the Tina Turner doc taught y’all not to force people to discuss abuse when they’re not interested in doing so.
I’m in Portugal for a conference (and, ironically, reading Rap Capital which chronicles the rise of QC and it’s artists, including Migos) and I really, really wish I was home in Atlanta right now.
This is so unnecessarily condescending. And that’s the only thing I can say on here about this without cussing, because it’s actually pretty infuriating.
I fell in love with "Misery Business" as a teenager before I grasped how problematic the lyrics to the song are. I'm still in love with Paramore because I've been able to grow up (and away from sentiments like that) alongside them.
Jalaiah as a cover girl for Atlanta Magazine. WE TRULY LOVE TO SEE IT.
(I had the pleasure of facilitating a convo between her and Sean Bankhead about viral content and choreography for the May issue.)
It’s Earth Day and
@Earthgang
is at Young Middle School unveiling a new community garden. The guys grew up in southwest Atlanta and attended Mays High School.
Prosecutors said Gunna is a “documented” gang member and that he and Williams “direct their troops” to commit violent acts. The judge said his biggest concern was witness tampering.
Gunna’s attorney can file a renewed motion for bond at a later date.
Renegade creator
@jalaiah
is taking back the dance the internet took from her.
Before the coronavirus pandemic,
@jewelwickershow
caught up with the 14-year-old dancer to talk choreography, viral fame, and her dreams for the future:
Good morning, yall. I’m in court today for opening arguments in the Young Thug / YSL RICO case. If you’re looking to catch up, here’s a preview I wrote for The Guardian.
Just accidentally tried to get into a car that looks just like mine. A Black man rolled down his window and we nervously chuckled about how that’s no longer an acceptable mistake to make.
Truly odd times.
The last time I saw Gunna and his mom, I was working on a GQ profile and attending a dinner celebrating his number one album. That was just a few months ago. This is wild.
Cant stop thinking Delaina Ashley Yaun’s family. I spoke to her sister, Dana Toole, today & she shared this photo of her sister with me. She says Delaina, 33, & her husband were at Youngs Asian Massage Parlor for a date night away from their kids (8 months & 14).
Casual reminder that most of the people who survive in this industry have other sources of income or security. In so many ways, media is only tenable for the privileged.
What a beautiful, beautiful list of firsts.
Teen Vogue has been:
1) the first national publication to work with me as a freelancer
2) the first publication to give me a cover story
3) now this:
Thrilled to announce that the lovely

while our exec editor is on maternity leave!
Jewel is a culture reporter (with 2 Teen Vogue cover stories under her belt) & former editor-at-large

. Welcome Jewel! ❤️
OK so this is a Pitchfork reporter who just got laid off and her pinned post brings up the big question I have about this news. How does this get covered if Pitchfork is now folded into GQ?
🙃🙃🙃🙃
here’s a story I’ve been working on for a few months, about how professional musicians who’ve chosen motherhood deal with an industry that’s poorly equipped to support them. we dug deep, but barely scratched the surface.

Capital B, the non-profit news organization launched by
@laurenwilliams
and
@KO_616
for Black communities throughout the U.S., has announced its first local newsroom will be in Atlanta.
I'm thrilled to work with them as the Editor-at-Large for the ATL newsroom.
I’m so envious of The Cut’s editorial strategy. It is phenomenal. They more than earn my subscription month after month.
And, also, I’m starting to feel like if anyone from The Cut approached me with a recording device I would run as fast as possible .
Flashback to a publicist wanting me to cover a Tory song in the midst of all of this. Said she’d grant me an interview with Tory but of course I couldn’t ask anything about the case. She referred to herself as a “feminist” and insisted no one cared about this case anymore.
Tory really taunted this woman publicly and privately. And he had help from so many artists, producers, executives, publicists. There was massive harm done here, on levels that we haven’t begun to unpack. Much of this year felt like we were hurtling past a breaking point.
I’m listening to an audiobook and they kept talking about a place in Georgia called “macone” and it truly just dawned on me what the narrator is trying to say. Please.
People can try to criticize the type of journalism Taylor does all they want but it’s ethical and she’s covering a beat that touches so many industries.
It’s outlooks like this that explain why we will continue to see young, Black journalists leave newsrooms/the industry.
I wish y’all would just say y’all don’t want this industry to be equitable for anyone who is not white and a star reporter covering a “respectable” beat at a legacy newsroom and STFU.
Is there really a Black town underneath Lake Lanier? I wrote about that

season opener and the history of race in Forsyth County (specifically Oscarville).
It’s very clear a lot of y’all don’t understand the psychological effects of an abusive relationship. It’s very easy to judge these women if you don’t understand that.

After years of having a complicated, public and personal relationship with her own body, Lena Dunham has come to terms with it. This week, the actor-writer-director debuts her new project: a plus-size clothing line.
If you don’t think the insistence by media organizations that they own your IP is a widespread problem that affects us all, you’re out of your mind.
And there’s a reason reporters trying to pitch larger projects (a book, podcast, etc.) get asked about their social following.
Two lil babies from southwest Atlanta made it into

about losing Lil Marlo, his political summer, the American Deli in the West End and more.
It's my last day at Teen Vogue and I'm trying not to get emotional but omg. I am not just saying this, but I do not know a better team in media. I was filling in for someone on maternity leave and the way they immediately WELCOMED ME WITH OPEN ARMS. Incredible.
For my

debut: Rev. Dr. Heber Brown III wants to connect Black churches with Black farmers—and transform a historic source of trauma into a source of power.
The way the court has enabled people to legally take away this woman’s bodily autonomy. My God.
Think of how many more women this could be happening to.
It doesn’t matter how long I’ve been navigating health insurance, I’ll never stop being overwhelmed and extremely angry at how purposely complicated the system is.
Everyone keeps saying he should’ve said it to her privately but I feel pretty strongly that he should’ve just shut up and kept it to himself altogether.
Young Thug’s attorney is playing Snoop Dogg’s Super Bowl performance to show him wearing blue and crip walking. 💀 His goal is to show that gang culture is prevalent in hip-hop culture.
