Singer/Songwriter/Host of Color Me Country Radio w/ Rissi Palmer (
@colormecntry
) on
@AppleMusic
/Special Correspondent for
@cmthot20
. My OFFICIAL & ONLY pg
This is Twitter, Tom, not a streaming service. I do plenty of singing on the streaming services. If your kids are still speaking to you, ask them how to listen to music on your phone.
I just saw the speech and was left breathless.
@MarenMorris
, that was a very classy move. I'm blown away. Thank you, sincerely. There are SO many artists of color out here waiting to be heard. I hope that all of Country music REALLY heard Maren tonight.
Fun fact: in 50+ years, there have only been 7 Black Women to chart on the Billboard Country Charts:
Linda Martell
Ruby Falls
Pointer sisters
Nisha Jackson
Dona Mason
Rissi Palmer (me)
Mickey Guyton (
@MickeyGuyton
)
.
@Beyonce
is on track to earn first career charting single on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart tomorrow.
She would be the first solo black female artist to appear on the chart since
@MickeyGuyton
in 2016 (“Heartbreak Song”).
Linda!!! This is the woman who laid the groundwork for all of us. She came out the same year as Charley Pride. This woman is a legend, she’s the reason I named my show color me country. All the props to Linda...
1. I'm so glad
@MarenMorris
mentioned Linda Martell in her speech
She is the country music pioneer you've never heard of
She made history as the first Black woman to perform at Grand Ole Opry...she received a standing ovation
Sadly, she was driven out of the business by racism
Although Jason is already pretty dope on his own, he’s doing 8 nights with a woman of color opener. THIS is what it looks like to be a co-conspirator/ally. Much respect,
@JasonIsbell
.
@JasonIsbell
and
@the400Unit
will return to the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN this October for eight shows.
Tickets go on sale Friday (7/16) at 10am CT.
More info:
My last thought on all of this: y’all confuse freedom of speech with freedom from consequence. You can say anything you want to. Loud, proud, and boldly. Just be prepared for the consequences of your words with that same fervor and confidence you spoke with.
Well, the cat’s out of the bag. I’m returning to the
@opry
to perform after 13 years on March 19. I’m really so very excited!!! Thank you for the love,
@CMT
For everyone saying that Country music doesn’t have a racism problem, check out what
@ChrisStapleton
is facing today for simply saying that black lives matter. Country music, you in danger, girl...
I see y'all are ready to write pieces about Charley Pride & that's awesome. However, I keep seeing these colorblind, "we didn't see him as Black" sentiments. I can't speak for Mr. Pride but I can speak for myself when I say that if you write about me and ignore or (Thread 1 of 4)
I got to meet him twice, the first time I was 19 and my managers and I were in the parking lot after the
@opry
hoping to meet him. He wished me luck and shook my hand. This picture was taken 8 years later, when we were both appearing on Opry. He hugged me and said "You made it"
I recall reading about MANY country radio programmers congratulating themselves on Beyoncé’s radio success at CRS, when in the past 20 years Black women make up 0.03% of radio airplay on Country radio. This is about to be awkward…💅🏽
Beyoncé references her 2016 CMAs performance with
@thechicks
in her cover reveal post for
#COWBOYCARTER
.
“This album has been over 5 years in the making. It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed...and it was very clear that I wasn't.”
I look forward to the sweeping reforms and influx of funding to the adoption/foster care system, the free gynecological and obstetric care, birth control, and comprehensive sex education that is surely coming after yesterday’s effective abortion ban in Texas. Can’t wait!
Now... what is going to be done to ensure that Mickey isn’t the only one for another 20 years? The real work begins now. If you look around your board room/staff meeting/studio session/band rehearsal and EVERYBODY looks like you, you’re doing this wrong.
I decided instead of being gaslit for calling a spade a spade all day, let’s amplify the positive. I’m making a playlist called “Color Me Country presents Songs about Small Towns”. Send me all the songs you love about small towns and people from small towns. All are welcome
Addiction is a disease, not a crime. Be kind because you have no idea what pain people are carrying. If you want to know who he was, look up the poetry he wrote, the prayers he prayed. DMX is an ancestor now...
This Sunday, Feb. 14 at 7pm est.,
@colormecntry
is having a discussion with
@AndreaWillWrite
,
@camcountry
, and
@MarenMorris
about why we are so passionate about shifting the culture of Country music, how we propose to do it, and the work we are doing personally to make it happen.
Fun Fact

: Five Black Women have written or co-written

Billboard Country Songs:
Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
Alice Randall - Xs & Os
Donna Summer - Starting Over Again
Priscilla Renea - Something Bad
Tayla Parx - Glad You Exist

In the trenches finishing a couple things but I wanted to hop on and say that I'm excited for Linda Martell to have her big moment in the sun, one that is 54 years in the making (and frankly over due). I also want to make sure that you all know that her granddaughter,
Welcome to all the new folks :-) My name is Rissi Palmer, I am a singer songwriter. I released my debut Country album in 2007. I love this music. I also host a show called
@colormecntry
on
@AppleMusic
that amplifies the voices of artists of color in Country/Americana music.
Y’all… I’m tired. Like tired tired. Not necessarily physically but mentally, I’m exhausted. Like, heavy. I’m usually an optimist so it’s been rough. I’m sending a shout to everyone who is just as tired. It’s HARD out here right now, you’re not feeling it alone…
Y’all. Andre 3000’s verse on the “Life of the Party” leak 😭 That man is a damn poet. I need Outkast back, I’m tired of all these substitute teachers…

If this were really about the sanctity of life, we’d have a healthcare system that works, living wages, affordable places to live, an education system that actually educates and pays teachers what they deserve, access to birth control and sex education, and a foster care system
Today was amazing. I need to sleep and gather my thoughts and will report back tomorrow but that was amazing.
@TheLongRoadFest
, we left everything on the stage. Also,
@MarenMorris
and
@CassadeePope
are forever the homies. That’s it. That’s the tweet.
I just saw the news about Naomi Judd...wow. Just. Praying for Wynonna, Ashley, and their family... Also, check on your friends and family that struggle with mental illness...
Will y'all call me when the "this isn't us" talk stops and the "this is a systematic issue that we need to deeply examine, completely deconstruct, and rectify" conversation begins? Otherwise, I'll be over here having a regular smegular Wednesday, unbothered.
Trust, girl, you WON many times this year when you used your voice and platform to move the culture forward and open the door for the ladies and gentlemen to follow...
This Saturday, March 30 at 12p et/11a ct,
@colormecntry
presents a one hour special, Say Her Name: A Love Letter to Black Women in Country Music. As the culture considers the future of Black women in the genre, we’re going to start from the beginning.
Imagine the desperation and fear you must feel to seek out a complete stranger on Twitter and then proceed to harass them because there are too many black people on your Country music awards show… when equality feels like oppression to you, you know you’re sick af. ✌🏽
Two things: 1) I’ve seen my words taken out of context this week. I haven’t spoken to any outlets about MW and don’t plan on doing so. 2) For us to continue to have this conversation and hyper focus on MW misses the entire point of the last two years. These issues existed
But the real news of the day is that
@MariahCarey
liked my comment on Instagram so I will be retiring from public life and shutting my social media down for good. It has been an awesome time and I will miss all of you
#mamaimadeit
Country singer
@RissiPalmer
always found it strange that black people were never talked about in the history of country music. Now, as a radio host, she's setting the record straight.
#RSFutureofMusic
Y’all... when I tell you I’ve had knots in my stomach all morning 🤢 Thank you to
@CBSThisMorning
for including me in this piece, I hope I did all of you proud. I pray that this isn’t a necessary conversation in the very near future...
It happened… we finally met in person. And she is EVERYTHING, 10s across the board. Thank you for inviting me to do the things,
@RhiannonGiddens
, can’t wait to see what’s next 👀
This handsome dude right here, my dad, is 73 today 😊 It’s also Founder’s Day for his frat (Phi Beta Sigma), so you already know he is turned up this weekend lol… he lurks on my socials so say hi and he’ll see it
Y'all!!!! Color Me Country Radio w/ Rissi Palmer premieres TOMORROW, Sunday, Aug. 30 at 7pm est on
@AppleMusic
!!! Here's how you can listen to show, whether you are a subscriber or not (you can hear it for FREE)
A Trump supporter carries a Confederate battle flag on the second floor of the U.S. Capitol near the entrance to the Senate, as a mob breached the building Wednesday.
If you want to know a little about the human behind the fine acting Michael K Williams did, watch this special he did with
@VICENews
about the juvenile justice system
One thing people don’t consider when thinking about abortion is women who are having miscarriages. I was that woman and because of the wait laws, I couldn’t get the care I needed, waiting days to see if my baby’s heart would start beating again. I ended up bleeding out for 3 days
Now, let’s make sure the Dems don’t squander this moment and hold their feet to the damn fire on EVERYTHING. Y’all owe. You owe us, you owe Stacy/Latosha/Conmijente and you owe him...
#goodtrouble
Quia Thompson (
@QuiaTarantino
) has been working hard on a documentary about her Linda's life and she could definitely use the money to finish it. It's important that the family maintain control of telling this story. Here's a link if you are so inclined:
So...here's a funny story. I was in the shower and paused the CMAs so I could watch when I got out. I'm brushing my teeth and my phone starts going NUTS. I got scared for a second (because if you know me, you know I'm paranoid at all times).
I’m proud and blown away to be included in The Power of Women in Country Music at the
@GRAMMYMuseum
. Some of my personal items will be alongside women who are some of my greatest inspirations. What is life?!?!?!?!
The interesting thing about social media is that people will say some of the most rude, intrusive, and oddly confident things that they would NEVER say to your face in person, and have "I love the Lord" or "I work with kids" in their bio for the world to see. Fascinating...
Now the real work begins. Please believe this ain’t over. If you sincerely want a democracy, hold this administration’s feet to the fire. That same resistance energy applies until they make good on EVERYTHING they promised...
This Sunday, January 30 at 7pm et, tune in to hear my conversations with singer songwriter
@JasonIsbell
and writer
@elamin88
to discuss our heroes, songwriting, “saying something”, and Isbell’s historic Ryman residency with Mickey Guyton, Brittney Spencer, Allison Russell,
So, I'm over here fangirling because I just read that
@outsidechild13
and I are both playing
@MerleFest
. It was enough to be in the same lineup as
@EmmylouSongbird
but this right here...dis tew much!!! Fingers crossed we're on the same day so I can finally say hey in person
I can’t even begin to tell you how proud I am that
@colormecntry
and I are included in the
@countrymusichof
‘s new exhibit “American Currents: State of Music” - it opens Friday, March 12, and recognizes artists, musicians, and songwriters who helped shape country music in 2020.
I got vaccinated (Moderna) & caught Covid. I have asthma and usually end up in emergency care and w/ a respiratory infection from a common cold. I truly believe having the vaccine kept me from having severe symptoms and out of the hospital. And with the shot, I only had soreness
People who have gotten vaccinated please share your experience so we can retweet. Aggressively.
The narrative of unconfirmed disproportionate horror stories is flooding the socials and it’s causing a lot of hesitancy.
...one day I’m going to write a song about all the angry dudes who go out their way to seek me out and come in my DMs and @ to tell me how irrelevant I am and why I shouldn’t talk because What I say doesn’t matter. No irony to see here, folks 🤦🏽♀️
If you are interested in a curated list of Country/Americana artists of color, I’ve made playlists on Apple () and on Spotify () and update both regularly! Enjoy!!!
White nationalist Patrick Howley is upset because there were too many Black people at the Country Music Awards: "Country music is different. It's not Wakanda."
Last thought: it's White Supremacy and racism that implies that being black and being "country" can't exist at the same time. Reprogram your thinking, EVERYBODY. Black AND white people.
Y'all...you are NOT making me cry today 😭 Your kind words and love have kept me going for the last 13 years, when NOBODY was watching, so today is making me feel really extra. Thank you, seriously 😘
So if any of you feel the need to send me anymore clips of rappers or anyone saying the n-word, send it to your Mom instead. Y’all are really obtuse as hell...
I believe now is the time to watch and move. Watch how people are responding and reacting and move accordingly. Systems only work when we continue to participate in them. The moment we stop and divest, they lose their power…
Nothing makes me happier than watching everyone thrive. Like, y'all are out here signing contracts, touring, making albums, getting endorsements. I love when good things happen to hard working, deserving, good people
Meanwhile, as the air in the room is once again sucked out by the same story,
@adiavictoria
put out an INCREDIBLE album last week,
@MickeyGuyton
is about to drop a gem this week, and
@MikoMarks
released yet another great single in preparation for a great EP…
So y’all, I’m currently working on a “special” episode of
@colormecntry
about the history of Black Women artists in Country music and it has been equal parts exciting, inspiring, and soul crushing… let me explain. So much of the music I want to play is not on streaming and (1)
Seeing my color isn't the issue. It's what YOU see when YOU see my color that's the issue. No, he wasn't a Black Country singer. He was a phenomenal, groundbreaking, and important to the genre Country Singer AND a Black man. All of those things are awesome. Acknowledge them. (3)
I first heard
@chapelhartband
in 2020, I loved them. They are stars. It’s always been just a matter of time before the rest of the world caught up. Congratulations ladies, you deserve this moment and more. The rest of you better get your tickets to see them now
Sooooo… I just listened to “Fancy Like” by Walker Hayes and I just have this to say… I better not hear not one of y’all part your lips and say something Breland or Willie Jones or Kane Brown or Mickey or anybody else does “ain’t Country”…
Judging from the news & my timeline for the past few months, it’s amazing to watch people who are bullies, preying on the vulnerable & courting controversy only to turn around and cry victim when they get called out. Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequence, y’all.
Y’all, if you’re going to argue with me, please bring numbers and facts. Not opinions or anecdotes. FACTS. Otherwise, I don’t feel like arguing about what you feel.
Things not to say to a woman carrying an instrument in the airport: “You play that thing?”. No, I just like carrying a guitar so I can be stopped and asked if I play it. 🙄 Boston, I need you to bring it tonight because between the plane lady and bro dude, I’m giving you side eye
Why is it when publications feature people of color, women, or lgbtq, I see this mess? Be better y’all. It’s not always about you. Just sit and eat your food. Supporting artists hasn’t become mandatory. Listen to your music and be best... 🤦🏽♀️
Today is a weird one. I want to post and be happy about the good stuff going on but I’m preoccupied with what’s happening in Ukraine. My heart breaks for the people just trying to live their lives who are now in the middle of war. What a time…
When I found out this was happening, I cried. This is a long time coming... I’m just really grateful to be a part of honoring her...
@CMT
to honor Black country music pioneer Linda Martell
I have spent the last 3 months speaking to Black and Brown women in Country/Folk/Americana music for a project I’m working on and I have to say... I LOVE us. I sincerely, truly do. I have gotten off the phone smiling every time. I can’t wait for you all to hear it...
If you are interested in learning more about Black, Latinx, & Indigenous voices in Country & Americana, I host a show called
@colormecntry
on
@AppleMusic
every Sunday at 7-9pm. I interview these artists and play their music. It’s a good time, check it out:
