If you don't land your dream job right away, don't get discouraged.
In 2008 I applied at
@hubspot
and got flat-out rejected. So I worked on my skills to become a better marketer. 2 years later, I was a HubSpotter.
Work hard and make an impact and you'll end up somewhere great.
I could be wrong, but... if you're an angel investor who has the means to write a lot of checks, don't drag a pre-seed founder through Series A-level due diligence for a $1000 investment. If you love the founder/team and the opp, write the damn check or move on.
I worked at InVision during its heyday, from $15m-$100m in revenue. If nothing but to share an important takeaway for other founders, Figma is not why InVision failed.
Simply, InVision failed because they stopped listening to customers.
Figma built tools InVision customers had
It's not nuts, it's perfectly reasonable.
It's always sad when a company goes under, and people lose their jobs because of it. But if you can't build a business that can support itself, this is what happens.
It happens to the dry cleaner on the corner. It happens to the
As an introvert, networking at events is anxiety-inducing.
Instead of having to walk up to folks randomly, I emailed them in advance (which was still scary). I said, I’m a wimp at large events!
The # of ppl who came to find me & give me a hug for sharing the pain was so welcome
I do not expect my team to:
- Respond to my late night Slack/emails. It can wait until next biz day.
- Be online during vacation. It’s a freakin vacation: unplug.
- “Ask for permission” to take time off. Just give a heads up. No excuses needed.
Exciting news! I’m thrilled to share that
@hiwonderment
has raised a $6M Series Seed, led by
@CRV
+ angels from
@Klaviyo
,
@loop
and
@Shopify
, putting us further toward our mission of helping brands deliver amazing customer experiences. 🎉
I’m a huge supporter of taking mental health days. So many silently struggle with depression or anxiety and feel guilty for wanting to take time off.
Employees should be able to take random time off, no excuses needed.
Just b/c a former employee underperformed, doesn’t mean they’re a bad person.
Could have hit a rough patch or just not a good fit for company stage/timing or their passion.
Important to still help them find a place for them to succeed. Pay it forward.

#ecommerce
is the hottest market to be in right now 🔥🔥🔥
In 2011, I told my boss I received a job offer from
@hubspot
.
Instead of being upset, he said “This is the best opportunity of your career. No counter offer can beat that...take it.”
Sometimes the best way for employees to grow is to let them flourish elsewhere.
Being a founder forces you to take on roles you've never had before. Just a few months ago, I didn't know much about:
- Fundraising
- Cap table management
- Equity distribution, legal paperwork
- Accounting + building operating plans
- Internal IT/infra
and now here we are :)
Content marketing takes time to compound, but the long-tail game is totally worth it.
@notarize
blog traffic has increased 2,000% since June of last year. ↗↗↗
Funny how often I hear folks say they want to start a company to be “their own boss.”
Nope. Founders report to:
- The Board
- Investors
- Customers
- Employees
- Partners
- The Media
- The Government
- Our Spouses
Hard to grow a business without help & accountability.
Sharing something I don't feel good about, but I believe in transparency.
Over the weekend, we had an outage that prevented emails from sending from Klaviyo, which means our shoppers did not receive transactional emails related to their shipments for 48 hours.

If a new job has you report to the CEO, ask "can I be the real me around this person?"
If you feel you can't disagree or be completely honest or expose your quirks, he/she is not getting the best of you.
Require the same of other exec colleagues you interview, too.
Even as a manager, it's important to Always Be Creating. Getting close the actual work with your own hands keeps you grounded and skills fresh and provides perspective for your team. No task is beneath you.
Coding websites, writing blog posts, building emails...never stop doing.
Whoa, just had my first exit as an angel investor. 🎉
Congrats to the
@moltin
team and🙏to
@underscorevc
for letting me be part of the journey. This is great news for the future of

Finally found a weekend to build a new website & blog for a pet project. Got everything launched in 48 hours, including Mktg automation, social, etc.
Can’t stress how impactful it is for marketers to know how to code. Even basic html, CSS, and JS means you can create anything.
A friend was evaluating two new job opps. One was a C-level title, the other a Director-level.
He chose the Director role, b/c he valued the company over role.
Lesson: don't chase titles. Instead, find amazing companies to work for with colleagues who are smarter than you.
Companies/managers that require employees to “request” time off (or arrive late / leave early) really grinds my gears.
The thinking that 100% productivity happens 9-5 is archaic. Give your team the flexibility to use good judgement and freedom to do great work. Plain and simple.
So many
#SaaS
companies today produce the same content mktg formulas as they did 10 years ago.
E.g. ebooks on "the complete guide to X" or blog posts on "5 reasons why." etc.
This shit works, until it doesn't. Now's a good time to invent the new ebook. Get creative.
Just realized - so many of people I’ve hired are now Director, VPs, or CROs at amazing companies.
Nothing makes me happier than seeing the people I’ve believed in get promoted or move into bigger roles.
To me, true success is when you impact the success of others.
Since covid, I've bought products from 20+ DTC brands.
Not once did any of the brands reach out and ask how I liked the product.
Feedback is a powerful weapon in building customer loyalty. Even hand-picking a few and ask "hey, how'd you like your purchase?" can go a long way.
In my early 20s, I was screamed at, belittled, and told I was ‘stupid’ by the CEO - during a company meeting.
It paralyzed me for years.
I became afraid to speak up & less confident in myself. It’s taken years to work on.
Lesson: never, ever criticize your employees in public.
Things I love:
- Forming diverse teams
- Solving big problems
- Building new products
- Shaping great cultures
- Learning a shit ton
Announcing something new soon 🤫
To be a better leader and exec means having to be far less afraid of being wrong or having all the answers.
Always be transparent, give completely honest feedback, be vulnerable, don’t hold back controversial ideas and opinions.
Took me awhile to get comfortable with that.
Shopify mktplace is a magical thing, but it’s given birth to the glut of micro-apps.
Consolidation is inevitable, true platform players will likely emerge as brands get tired of paying for, managing, and stitching together multiple tools and features.
When I started
@hiwonderment
, I already felt like a failure bc I didn't have a clear product idea or cofounder on Day 1.
Then a wise investor told me the best ideas need time to be discovered.
Almost 1 yr later now have:
* 2 awesome cofounders
* Product direction
* $ in bank
1/ As a manager, can’t stress how important it is to always be recruiting.
I dedicate 6-8 hours/week on recruiting with a goal to meet 1-3 new people every week.
And not always marketers, but great sales, product, engineering folks. Hiring is a team sport.
If ur early in your career, try to land at a great company or working for a great manager (ideally both) vs obsessing over title or role or pay.
Wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t joined
@hubspot
(amazing company) +
@jeannehopkins
@mvolpe
(amazing managers) early on.
If you’re just starting to be public online (sharing ideas or things about yourself, etc), and no one is clicking that heart icon often, don’t get discouraged.
It take’s time to build audience and influence. Just keep doing what you’re doing.
When making an offer, don't ask job candidates to divulge their current salary. It results in pay inequality, especially for women and minorities.
Don't care if the question is legal in your state, don't do it.
HUGE week of accomplishments for
@hiwonderment
.
1) Closed our fundraising round

If anyone wants to work with a company that encourages a healthy dialog about societal issues and empowers people to express themselves...we’re hiring.
Things as a consumer I wish I were true in eComm:
* 1-click universal checkout for all stores
* Customize furniture and home goods
* Ability to bundle products from diff stores
* Not receive 5 billion promo emails when I subscribe
What are yours?
I’m thinking of doing a quarterly “resume refresh” session with my employees, where I help them add the meaningful new skills they’ve learned to their LinkedIn.
I don’t want them to leave, but I want them to get the best offer they can if they choose to.
Love those surprise emails from publications I've never heard of that me/my company won an award...AND I'll be featured on the cover of their magazine that no one reads!
...AND it only costs $2500!
Congrats to me!
I wish I kept every version of my resume I’ve ever created.
Whenever I’m having a bad day, Id look back and realize just how far I’ve come.
And get a good laugh.
Today,
@notarize
has announced our $20m Series B. This is just one milestone in our journey to transform entire industries. p.s. we're hiring!

So often people try to take credit for ideas, for inspiration, for results, vs give credit to those who deserve it.
Won’t hurt next time you tweet/email/Slack/whatever that “this was her idea...”
Less take more give.
My goal in life is to not buy fancy houses or cars. I want to be wealthy enough so I can dedicate my full time toward:
1. Growing the next gen female leaders & investors w/
@GirlCapitalBos
2. Open an animal sanctuary and stop animal cruelty
3. Fund an orphanage overseas
Tomorrow is
@hiwonderment
's 1-year anniversary.
A year ago, it was just
@bwhalley
and me. We had a vision for how eCommerce was changing and a passion to build something amazing, but that was it. No product, no concrete idea, no cash in the bank.
It’s unfortunate we tolerate a misogynist who grossly objectifies his own wife on stage. I think we need to redefine what a “top sales leader” looks like.
Also this isn’t a reflection of Drift or their values. An honest mistake, we can all learn from this. Onward.
#hypergrowth18
I can’t stress this enough...
If people say you’re ideas are wrong or stupid,
If you feel out of place b/c you see things differently,
If you sense conventional wisdom is broken,
you’re onto something great. Keep going.
Morning me: “Cant wait to go back to sleep later.”
Mid-day me: “Yea I’m definitely going to bed early tonight.”
Midnight me: “Must. Read. Every. Article. On. The. Internet.”
I am pumped (and largely terrified) to announce the launch of my upcoming podcast: Unconventional Commerce.
This was not easy for me, which I'll explain below, and hope it inspires others to JUST GO and CREATE SOMETHING....
I often have autocorrect marketing brain when I txt.
Words I meant, but turn into:
Lunch 👉 Launch
Champaign 👉 Campaign
Experience 👉 Experiment
Add 👉 Ad
Conversation 👉 Conversion
Funny 👉 Funnel
Person 👉 Persona
Contact 👉 Content
Does this happen to anyone else?
Was talking to my Lyft driver about
#Boston
’s poor public transit system and he said:
“We should stop just trying to make the T slightly more reliable and instead get it to where the world is envious, even if it takes 30-40 years.”
This is my motto in life going forward.
Why haven’t press releases been disrupted?
You pay $1500 to post a release on the “wire” with little idea where it ends up. Quality of distribution also poor.
Not to mention, releases incentivize biz to write jargon-filled nonsense that no one cares to read.
1/ I don't know when/why it became the norm in corporate culture to have a "good reason" to take time off, but it's broken.
Employees shouldnt have to say their "sick" or make up stories. My motto: when you need a day off, no excuse necessary.
As I look ahead, I can’t help but feel incredibly fortunate to start the new year with such an amazing team.
I am so grateful for this crew and for the opportunity to work together. I can only imagine what the
@notarize
#marketing
team will accomplish in 2019. 🙏
Just learned my very first angel investment is now profitable and generating seriously good revenue.
Company is also led by a female founder and CEO. Happy to help support the next gen of women entrepreneurs. You go girl. 🚀
As a startup, there’s a million things you wish you could be doing. It pains me to see things and be like “damn, I wish I thought to do that.”
But focus is key. Can’t burn yourself out doing everything.
Finishing my first week
@notarize
and already:
1. Shipped my first mktg launch (w/ the amazing
@1aura1opez
)
2. Have too many tabs open
3. Organized a year's worth of projects in Trello
4. Learned more than I have in months
5. Ate all the snacks in the kitchen
Life is great.
Just signed up for
@tiktok_us
. First reactions:
1. I’m really old now.
2. (Chuckles at a few videos) - Maybe I’m not as old as I think.
3. (Creates first video) - hey I’m just as cool as the young kids.
4. (Listens to what I just said) yep, I’m old.
Big news: We’re a featured

app!!
To celebrate, we’ll be sharing a few of our favorite 5-star reviews from our amazing customers.
First up:
@jonesroadbeauty
❤️
And I’m back!
My twitter account was hacked and completely deleted earlier this week (luckily no other accounts were involved).
Super scary to have 12 years of work taken away from you overnight.
Many thanks to Twitter Support/Eng for bring me back to life!
I missed you all!
Got a cold email, subject line that I'm "playing hard to get."
Yes, yes. Of course I am. I have nothing better to do than to not respond to spammy sales email with literally zero value. You caught me. 🤦
