Fifty-four white supremacists arrested in Arkansas a month ago, and the story came and went. Seems like an appropriate day to revisit it—and to remember that in 2018, Arkansas had the eighth-highest number of hate groups per capita in the US. We’ve got to talk about this.

Just in case anybody doesn’t know: - *All* 135 seats in the Arkansas legislature are up for grabs in 2022. - All 135 districts (100 House, 35 Senate) will look different once redistricting is completed sometime this fall. - The qualifications to run are, uh, low.

This isn’t a partisan issue. There are Republicans who think this is moving too quickly, Republicans who have concerns about vouchers, Republicans who have concerns about the hit to the state budget, Republicans who didn’t vote for this today. #ARpx (1/2)

For those affected by last night's tornado in Springdale: - Jose's Bar & Grill in Springdale is offering a free hot meal to those displaced. No questions asked. - The Treehouse Pantry has food bags available for pickup at 802 W Allen Ave between 9:00a and 4:00p. (1/2)

LEARNS was not on the ballot. When Arkansans voted last November, there was no LEARNS Act. There were no public details. Even many lawmakers didn’t see details until the bill was filed halfway through session. CAPES is a bipartisan effort to repeal what many see as a flawed law.

LEARNS was already on the ballot. This is an effort to repeal teacher pay raises, school safety trainings, literacy coach hiring, and our new maternity leave program. This is an effort to maintain the failed status quo.

It's absolutely no one's business why someone might need or want an abortion. If you consider yourself anti-abortion but support exceptions, then you believe it should be a person's choice—and *it's absolutely no one's business* why someone chooses.

So a special session's coming Monday. It'll (very likely) move super quick, meaning by midday Wednesday—maybe even before many Arkansans even know their lawmakers are at the Capitol—there could be big changes to our state's Freedom of Information Act. Not great. #ARpx

Just saw some right-wing hand-wringing over the fact that (apparently?) more than half the CAPES signatures came from just five counties, four of which are the most populous counties. Where would *you* go if you had just about 50 days to get more than 54,000 signatures? (1/3)

A reminder that as hostile, armed white men stormed a state capitol today, a 25-year-old black man was shot and killed in Georgia while running. That’s it. That’s all. Ahmaud Arbery loved to run and was running, an act that drew the attention of the two white men who killed him.

Two white men chased and fatally shot Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black man running through a Georgia neighborhood. A prosecutor said the pursuers were justified because of the state’s citizen’s arrest law.

Arkansas shouldn't be a right-to-work state. Arkansas should be a state where workers can form unions, and where those unions can thrive. Arkansas should be a state where unionized workers can push for stronger wages, better workplace policies, and greater work-life balance.

Lot of Republican voters out there angry about Republican lawmakers looking to gut FOIA. It’s understandable. But if you’re a GOP voter angry at GOP lawmakers for gutting FOIA (or something else), you gotta be ready to vote for an alternative—else what are you teaching them?

An audit last week backed up the Arkansas Board of Corrections' decision not to add prison beds right now. The audit found that five Arkansas prisons lack the staff and infrastructure to handle hundreds of new prisoners. (1/2)

Governor Hutchinson is reinstating a public healthy emergency, effective today, for 60 days. Under a new law, the legislature will need to review the governor’s declaration. Don’t like it? Go get vaccinated, and let’s put this shit behind us.

Getting vaccinated and wearing a mask aren’t personal choices. To let your own house burn might feel like a personal choice, but it threatens the homes of those around you. These aren’t personal choices. We’re in this together. Get vaccinated, and wear a mask.

Still hung up on our governor turning down $146 million in federal rental assistance because “there’s jobs aplenty.” Arkansans face higher prices at grocery stores and gas pumps—but, hey, don’t worry, “our economy has returned,” so no worries about making rent, y’all! (1/2)

Today your Arkansas legislature advanced a bill to teach creationism in public schools and overrode the governor’s veto on the country’s first bill banning health care for trans youth—so it’s been a real banner day for us.

The Covid relief bill passed by the US House will cut child poverty by nearly half. In Arkansas alone, 48,000 children will be lifted out of poverty. Forty-eight thousand kids! And each of our four Republican members of the House voted against the bill.

Our daughter’s school told parents today that an employee tested positive for Covid-19—and that the Arkansas Department of Health “advised” the school to do its own contact tracing “due to a backlog in the state.” This is where we are, 104 days since our first confirmed case.
