At this blessed moment for (half) Jamaicans, a personal story. Many years ago a talented young man enrolled at the Univ of West Indies. He asked his advisor: what should he study? “Math!” his advisor said. That student? Kamala’s dad. That advisor? My dad.
I signed the Harpers letter because there were lots of people who also signed the Harpers letter whose views I disagreed with. I thought that was the point of the Harpers letter.
I did not know who else had signed that letter. I thought I was endorsing a well meaning, if vague, message against internet shaming. I did know Chomsky, Steinem, and Atwood were in, and I thought, good company.
The consequences are mine to bear. I am so sorry.
Huh. Call me old-fashioned. But I would have thought that the point of a festival of ideas was to expose the audience to ideas. If you only invite your friends over, it’s called a dinner party.
No math, no Berkeley grad school. No grad school, no marrying Kamala’s mom. No marriage, no Kamala. Ok. I’m stretching things. But if Kamala wins it all one day, my Dad (from up there) will be happy man.
I know D'Souza likes to rewrite the history of the 1960s, but I never expected him to erase the very real contributions that conservative student activists made to the Free Speech Movement.
Joe McCarthy was done in when he was confronted by someone with intelligence and guts, before a live audience. Sometimes a platform is actually a gallows.
Just reading the responses to my
@NewYorker
piece on the unknowns about marijuana. I’m puzzled why pot advocates would be hostile to the idea of learning more about the consequences of their habit. Haven’t we been through this w the climate deniers?
How do I know this? Because one of my very first published pieces of journalism—in 1985!—made fun of D’Souza. You know who wrote in to complain? His then girlfriend Laura Ingraham. The conspiracy of dunces runs VERY deep.
On the eve of the Biden/Harris administration, it’s time to ask the really tough question. Who gets to claim Kamala as their own? The Indians? Or the Jamaicans? My vote should be obvious. 🇯🇲! 🇯🇲!

We action all we can against our policies. Most of our system today works reactively to someone reporting it. If they don’t report, we don’t see it. Doesn’t scale. Hence the need to focus on proactive.

In a typical year the U.S. sees between 200k and 800k hospitalizations from the normal flu. Roughly half of Americans don’t get a flu shot. A really good way to flatten the curve would be to try and get that number to 100 percent in the next week or so.
Semi-serious question: If the risk of covid transmission is greatest in indoor environments where people are talking/laughing/singing, why not let restaurants reopen if patrons dine in silence? Bring a book! The introvert in me LOVES this idea.
I’m not going to lie,

was cool as a cucumber in the hot seat. He made a professional hot sauce eater look like a rookie the way he handled the Heat.
For those who have forgotten, Paul Ryan claimed to have a “2:50 something” marathon PR. Actual time: just over 4 hours. I think that explains the math on the Republican tax bill.
The Revisionist History team! L-r. Flawn Williams. Luis Guerra. Jacob Smith. Mia Lobel. Julia Barton. Me. Andy Bowers. (Missing: Camille Baptista). Best crew in all of podcasting. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart.

Perhaps the bigger issue with Harvard admissions:
In 1977, freshman class was 1,585 with endowment of $2 billion.
In 2017, freshman class was 1,659 with endowment of $37 billion.
In 40 years, class size grew just 5% while endowment grew 1750%.
Yesterday, the running community lost one the best people with the passing of Gabe Grunewald. She inspired thousands with the courage and determination that she brought to her decade-long battle with cancer.
SF’s Presidio golf course is open as a park during the crisis. It was surreal to spend the day there. 150 acres of some of most gorgeous land on the peninsula: cypress groves, rolling hills and patches of nasturtium ... all usually too dangerous to walk through as a pedestrian.
Re—the Alexi McCommand case: the criminalization of black adolescent behavior is one of the bedrock principles of American racism. White people get a childhood and the privilege to make mistakes in the name of moral development. Black people don’t.
Another question for Condé Nast HR: if they don’t believe there is a meaningful distinction between adolescence and adulthood, will they now be shutting down Teen Vogue?
A Los Angeles architect suggests that the solution to the city’s affordable housing and homelessness crisis might lie on the 18th green: Redevelop the golf courses
Just learned that Jackie Robinson’s brother Mack won the silver medal in the 200 at the Berlin Olympics, behind Jesse Owens. Is this the second greatest sports sibling combo after the Williams sisters?
The last episode of season 3 is out! Elvis, some magic from Jack White and the heartbreaking Kaci Bolls. Keep Kleenex handy!! I think it’s one of the best we’ve ever done. Thanks to everyone who who listened!
Joan Benoit Samuelson's goal was to run within 40 minutes of her winning time from 1979. She ran only 28:45 slower than 40 years ago. 3:04:00 at 61. And note the Bowdoin singlet, a nod to the jersey she wore in winning the 1979 race.
Remarkable drama in Arizona.
After six hours of running, a bloodied Jim Walmsley comes just 12 seconds shy of Nao Kazami's 6:09:14 world record for 100k.
He was on pace through 95k.
Still an absolutely heroic run -- 5:56 pace for over 62 miles.
I unsubscribed from Revisionist History this morning when Malcolm Gladwell made an off-hand remark that Roger Federer is the greatest tennis player of all time.
Another question for Condé Nast HR: do they believe that people can meaningfully apologize for past misdeeds? If not, why not? If so, what does an acceptable apology under their rules look like?
We’re back, baby! Season 4 of
