“What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no-one who wanted to read one.”
This bodes ill. Readers used to outnumber non-readers 2 to 1. Now non-readers outnumber readers 3 to 1. It's hard to imagine a change of that magnitude not having significant effects.

DWS Amsterdam deserve a shout. In 1962-63 they won the Dutch second division for the first time in their history, then followed it up by winning the Eredivisie the following season for the first and only time in their history. Also the last Dutch champions not to wear red & white

Mentioned this before. EP Thompson's Time, Work-Discipline and Industrial Capitalism ends with a subject of popular preoccupation in the late 60s- what will we do in the age of leisure abundance that was coming. Something went dreadfully wrong and that point was 1979/1980.
You work 8 hours to live 4? You work 8 hours to eat in 15 minutes? You work 5 days to enjoy 2? You work all year just to have 28 days of annual leave? And people still call this a “life”. I'll die on this hill: 9-5 is a SCAM.

I once read a theory that Korean and Finnish education always came near the top of world outcomes because both languages are so straightforward kids can concentrate more on other aspects of the syllabus. No idea if this is true or not.
I've seen polyglots say repeatedly that the two easiest spoken languages on earth are French and Indonesian.

My only concern about Scotland qualifying was that the 'wha's like us eh? we hate England 😂 love bagpipes, hills and glens' output would be turned up to 11. This is turned up to 12. Patronising, condescending drivel which doesn't bode well for BBC coverage.
A celebration of a landmark year in Scottish football from @IainDoesJokes and others 🏴 😄 An even better 2026 ahead? 🤔

Decades of American empiricism and positivism, all its allergy to theory and love for digestible, immediately coherent pop history arranged in satisfying narratives presented as evident paved the way for this moron, someone obsessed with the past, but who only sees it as a mirror
Aristotle used the word “aristocracy” to mean what we now call “meritocracy”: rule of the best. But if you told Aristotle that true meritocracy meant inviting the smartest Persians to rule Athens, he would’ve had you tried and executed for treason.

I accept this people's mandate with humble heart and mind and promise I will not appear on a People's Daily tweet being sentenced to death for corruption between a tweet about cute fluffy ducks and a 4 year old skateboarding prodigy from a village in Shaanxi province.
2026 will see officials born in the 1970s take over posts at the provincial level in China. Of these officials 43.1% have doctorate degrees, 48.3% have masters degrees. These officials grew up and matured during the reform and opening up of the 1980s and 1990s. This is a

Proustian rush here, every school jotter I wrote in had this on the front cover.
Ghost signs of Glasgow: remember this? It’s a mosaic tiled vestibule on Albion Street of the logo of the former Strathclyde Regional Council which existed from 1975 to 1996 when it was abolished. I love how 1990 has been worked into the tiles thus dating this from the year

I wonder if I was to scan Spanish politics and media just now there would be a similar united meltdown in support of Maccabi hooligans. And if not what this tells us about the nature of the relationship between British politics and media and the State of Israel.

The initial united concerted narrative and now silence espoused by UK politicians & media from the shitrag right to sensible hacks such as Ronay in defending this club's fans was sinister in the extreme and a clear example of the collusion with Israel in which power resides.
UEFA have fined Maccabi Tel Aviv £17,500 and given them a suspended away supporter ban due to "racist and/or discriminatory behaviour" from their fans at their #UEL clash at VfB Stuttgart last week. The away ticket allocation ban is suspended for two years.
